silly vent
so... ILs live about 5 hours away, and are here for 3 nights.
DS is 3, and they kind of made up their own "nicknames" for themselves... they call themselves "g-ma and g-pa". it annoys the heck out of me!!! LOL its not like it came from something he called them when he was leaning to talk or anything.... they made it up themselves, pretty much out of nowhere.
I refer to them as grandma and grandpa (ex "go give that to GRANDMA", gave her a photo mug for Christmas that says " I love Grandma" on it) hoping they and he will get the hint, but so far its not working. I'll say that, and they'll say "ok- come give it to g-ma".
UGH!! super silly vent, but it just annoys the heck out of me! LOL Thanks for letting me get it out here so I don't go off on them

My cousins call my aunt (their grandmother) Gma. I think it's a new thing now, I've heard of other people using it as well. It's not as old a nickname as Nanny or Nana but it is a nickname. I'm sorry it bothers you especially since you'll hear it for the rest of your life!

I'm 32 weeks pregnant but my dad said he wanted to be called pop pop and I said no. I think he was upset but I just don't care for it.

I would tell them that considering DS is learning English, you only want them to use the proper term (grandma and grandpa).

I can understand it being annoying -
My parents wanted to be Grandma & Grandpa
but they were WITH my son ALL the time, so they were called whatever he could say - HE decided they were Moma & Papa .....
so now my 2nd son, and my neice (well, she can't talk yet) but everyone refers to them as Moma & Papa - and my inlaws became Grandma & Grandpa .........

We refer to our parents as grandma and grandpa and so do all the grandkids except my DD! She insists on calling Grandpa, Pop Pop and I have no idea where it came from but she insists. My father isn't too thrilled but it is what it is! : ).

It is annoying and does sound a bit rapperish but I'm not sure if there is anything you can do, I don't know if you can tell people what they want to be called. If ey were calling your DS a silly nickname that would be different.
What does DH say? Maybe have him make fun of it and maybe in a passing joke like way tell them it is silly.
Or just hope it doesn't stick with DS, if you keep saying grandpa/grandma and he doesn't see them that often it just may not.

This is exactly what I was thinking! I would be expecting them to bust out into Rappers Delight at any moment . . .
That would annoy me too lol.

I feel as though they can choose what they want to be called. My parents are g and grandpa. I would never say anything to them. It's the same as if you want to go by mom, mommy or mama.

UGH THATS ANNOYING...
my MIL refuses to call DD by her name and constantly calls her "my sweet girl" .... SO FRUSTRATING!!!! everything is "hi my sweet girl" "oh look at my sweet girl" "hellooooo my sweet girl" "let my sweet girl come to grandma" "oh grandma loves my sweet girl"
makes me wanna do this to her...

When DD#1 was almost 1 my MIL decided she wanted to be Mama T(because she was too young to be grandma). At the time I put my foot down because DD called me Mama. My DD started calling them Me-ma and Pe-pa all on her own with no prompting. 7 years later all 3 of my kids go by what my oldest DD chose. I refer to them as grandma and grandpa but they all still say Mema and Pepa when talking to them.

This would infuriate me!
My mom absolutely did not want to be called grandma, so she picked Gigi. We all laughed and made fun of her, but it was what she wanted and we now call her Gigi. So my parents are Gigi & Grandpa. My Mil & SFIL are Nana and Papa (even though MY grandmother has been Nana for years for her 9 other great-grand kids). And my FIL & SMIL are Grandpa and Grandma.
(Side note, my DD differentiates between her 2 Nana's by calling my MIL "Big Nana" and my grandmother "Little Nana". She came up w/ it on her own at 2 and it makes me crack up on the inside EVERYTIME she calls MIL "Big Nana".

Thanks everybody for letting me vent!! I know it's a silly thing... And I'm glad they're around and he LOVES them. Just one of those things that for some reason drives me a little nuts
I think it' might be that being called grandma and grandpa makes thm feel old. Lol they're only in their early 60s and very young acting...so I'm sure that's a part of it
