Gift situation, may sound silly but kinda upset (VENT)..
Okay, let me preface this by saying I pretty much never complain about gifts, I am usually happy with whatever I get.
On Christmas, I open a gift from SIL. It turns out to be a package of two Christmas hurricanes. Nothing special, but cute, and as always I was appreciative.
When I returned home, I decided to open the box and display them on my table. Well, lo and behold, I find one, yes just one, hurricane in there. Mind you the package said set of two!!!!! Looking back, I did remember seeing the SAME EXACT hurricane on her table.
For good measure, she did put in replacement of the second hurricane a bunch of little tea candles inside. Okay, this may sound silly but I am terribly hurt by this tackiness. The package couldn't have been more that 9.99 to begin with and she could bear giving me the extra candle. Maybe it is the fact that I care too much what they think of me, maybe I get too emotional during the holidays due to my own family issues, I just don't know.
I told DH and though he understands my hurt, he doesn't know what we can do about it. Furthermore, might I add we are very generous with them, particularly her own kids. Her son requested a DVD that didn't arrive at our house on time, so not to make him feel left out, I sent DH out to get him another gift for the time being.
What would you do in this situation? Maybe nothing but the venting felt a little better.

I just can't believe some people when it comes to this. 
I am sorry that you are going thorough this. I think it's just plain tacky and cheap that anyone would do that. If she liked it that much, she should bought one set for herself.
At least now you know how greedy and cheap she is.
I'd continue to be generous with her kids....after all, they are not really responsible of their parents' behavior. And I'd not mention anything to her at all.
Once again, sorry you are going through this....

That is pretty crummy of them. 
If I were you, I wouldn't say anything. Next year, I'd cut back on their gifts.
ETA: I mean cut back on the SIL's gifts, not the kids.

That is pretty freaken cheap, if it makes you feel any better! I'm so sorry! Now you know what you are dealing with and next year, off to the dollar store you go! I wouldn't say anything, but as long as your DH knows the situation and agrees with you, you're fine. Pretend it doesn't bother you!

First of all,
I understand completely what you're saying. I had a semi similar incident with a cousin about 4 years ago. I opened the box to find margarita glasses and the stuff to make it. But, one of the glasses was totally broken. Not that big a deal right? Well as I digged into the box I brought out a little card... "Dear Kathi...". I'm Eileen - my cousin is Kathi. So, she regifted a broken gift and gave it to me. I was so hurt
If I were in your position, I would just mention the hurricane lamp that she has, how it's exactly the same as yours. Or, if you've got guts (I don't  ), say "Where did you get the hurricane you gave me? They only gave you one lamp, the box says two." I'd LOVE to do that, but never would. But if you have the guts, go for it!
ETS: I probably wouldn't do anything I said, I'd just really really want to do it  If you can, look past this and just 'remember' it next year, as the other girls have said.

I was just reading Leeners' response.
I just thought of it as I was reading hers. I'd keep the hurricane lamp in the same box and give it back to her as her gift next year. That should teach her a lesson as to not be so tacky and greedy and to buy a set for her whenever she likes a gift so much. 
And like I said before, I'd still be generous with her children only......

I would be upset and dissapointed to. i think i would do exactly as the other girls suggested and reduce the amount of the gift i would give her, but not to the kids. the kids i would keep giving the same. though i might not give her kid the dvd that you had ordered but did not come. i would give it some other time for some other reason.

i would be offended and upset as well.
why not casually mention that although you didn't notice when you orginally opened the box but there is only one hurricane candle. ask where she bought it because you would like to go back to the store and complain. tell her it is such a nice gift but it clearly states on the box that it is 2 candles and you are confused why there is only one.

no nerve needed. it is totally innocent. don't accuse her, blame it on the store and say that you feel bad that she spend the time and $$ on such a thoughtful gift and the store was wrong for selling her only one when she paid for 2.

What evil genius  It's true. If you didnt' suspect her- wouldn't you do the same thing? I know I would. You blame the store.

Thats the thing, I know for a fact it wasn't a screw up. A few small tea candles were included in place of the actual hurricane. Looked like a cover-up. lol

I'd play it off and tell her that she was ripped off because it was missing one. Don't tell her you saw the other one at her place just tell her that she should go exchange it wherever she bought it because it's an incomplete set.
She's an idiot! Unfortunately, I know someone that would do something stupid like that too.

I'd do the same thing. Play dumb and tell her the box says 2 hurricane lamps but only one was in there and tell her you love them so you'd like to exchange them for one that has 2 in the box.

exactly. if she says that she will call the store or exchange it for you, tell her that you have a TON of errands to do and it is too much for her w/ the kids.
after "visiting the store" i would tell her that you were told that the hurricanes are sold as a set as stated on the box and tealights are not included. i would also follow w/ telling her that the salesperson said that they employ stock people to check all items prior to shelving/displaying THEN say that the salesperson actually had the nerve to say "someone" obviously replaced the 1 hurricane w/ candles.
