I agree that dogs can be rehabilitated and I also would do the same.. I will not leave my dog alone with my daughter.. I just cant wait till she is old enough to love her and know how to treat her.. I am training my daughter to act appropriately now.. I also try to teach Lola not to be afraid of dd.. I think alot of biting comes from fear.

I agree we also do the same with our dog!! At first Otis wanted nothing to do with Riley he was the baby of the house before she came along. Now that she is 8 months old and going no where he has come around and loves her and she just loves him I get the best laughs out of her from him just walking into the room!!

She said it many instances if a dog breaks skin and tastes blood then it most likely will happen again.

Separate from the rest of your post, I wanted to address this because I heard this before and did some research on it. I never found anything to prove either side but someone brought up a good point - most of us feed a meat based product or even give table scraps with blood/other animal fluids in it. With my limited knowledge, I don't think the taste of blood alone would cause a dog to bite more than it would without.

Hmmm I disagree. First, table scraps do not have blood. Water that is red in color, yes, but not blood.

If you feed your dog steak, yes, that is blood if your steak is not fully well done.

Thought I'd jump because this happened to us - our dog bit Christina.

It wasn't a really bad bite but it also wan't a scratch. I called the breeder, she asked if the bite broke the skin and was the dog provoked. Yes, it broke the skin and the kids were horsing around but not with the dog. She said it many instances if a dog breaks skin and tastes blood then it most likely will happen again. We gave the dog back to the breeder to be on the safe side. It was heart breaking but now when I look back I am happy I made that decision. As for the dog, the breeder kept her where she continues to have a good life, just not around children.

Hmmm I disagree. First, table scraps do not have blood. Water that is red in color, yes, but not blood. Meat based dog food is processed. But what ever it is I made my decision on what the breeder and vet had discussed with me. It sounded logical and in the end I didn't want to take any chances. Also, here's the rest of the story. After this incident it was a few days before the breeder and vet got back to us. In the meantime a family friend came over with their teenage daughter. She bent down to pet the dog and out of no where and for no reason the dog snapped at her. This was strike two and you are out. So, after this second incident and what the breeder and vet said, we made our decision.

I'm not questioning your decision. I was discussing the statement that the breeder and vet made that I disagree with. That's why I quoted only that sentence and not the rest of your post. Again, I'm not questioning what anyone has done. I've already said my opinion and what *we* would do. It just so happens that my opinion is not the same as others who have responded. That's all.

I'm not here to debate with you (or go off topic), believe what you want then ask a butcher and health department on how meat needs to be prepared!

What an unfortunate coincidence that a poster on our Parenting forum is gong through this situation just as you poted this. I feel horribly for Gabi as she is such a nice girl and truly wants to do what's best for her family. Surely you can see why the assumption was made that this post was related to Gabi's situation. Sorry for the assumption- I know what happens when one assumes.Chat Icon

But even if it was, I am sure Diana did not have ANY intent other than to find out what others thought for their own situations.

As we all say, everyone has to make the decision that is best for them so we are all just speaking for ourselves.

If this post WAS created in response to Gabi's situation- it's insensitive considering it's obvious the pain Gabi is in with her decision. The OP has made it clear that this has nothing to do with the post- so the point is moot.

I grew up with a pekinese/poodle mix that bit. We did nothing to provoke him he just was a snappy dog. He didnt do well around children and bit a couple of people in his lifetime. We dealt. When small children were coming over, we put him in the bathroom. We partly blamed ourselves because we didnt train him right. Giving him up was never an option. It was instilled that we picked him...he didnt pick us and that we needed to accept him for who he was. On his good days he was a great dog and a lot of fun. On his mean and nasty days you just learned to stay the heck away from him. Sort of like me. My DH knows when I'm in a "mood." If he ignore this mood and/or continues to push my buttons, then its HIS faultChat Icon

Now that I have a baby, would my position change? No. I cannot say it would. As I do not currently have a dog I will be very diligent in selecting a breed that typicially has no issues (golden retriever). While I would prefer to adopt, I would likely go to a reputable breeder so I could know its past.

As for my cat who is already a member of our family...so far she has been great with DS...she's very curious about him but even she has a bit of an attitude and will kind of swat at you or be mouthy. It is my job to teach my son NOT to pull her tail and to "make nice." I am fundamentally opposed to declawing however if my only two options were to rehome or declaw, I'd have to remove her little kitty pawsChat Icon

Should my DS develop an allergy to her, I dont know what I'd doChat Icon

I know I am def not questioning your decision. Esp with a large breed like that, not easy to keep away from a child I am sure. I just questioned what they said about tasting blood.

I am very much with you on this. The same mindset as you. I agree, just as some people are nasty or snap or do certain things in fear.

When my dad got nervous or upset growing up, he would lose his temper and give us a smack/whack, etc. It was just from his energy and nervousness. So I see my dog as like that too and know that my DD will have to learn to stay away from him at certain times.

We chose our dog. We tried to socialize him with children. Even as a 3 mth old puppy, he went to grab my cousin's son's diaper. He has always been that way. Just a very mouthy, nervous dog. If he got very bad or really tried to bite hard, I would get a trainer again. But having had one, we worked so hard with him and much of his personality remained the same. Some of it is just who they are.

The way I truly see it is my dog will get older as my DD gets older. My dog gets crazy when ANY of us get on the floor, that's how we play with him. He mouthes us even in play but yes, I can say I KNOW he would bite b/c he has bitten me when he gets crazy (such as someone at the door). So we work around those things and will do our best but for us rehoming him is not an option. We just have to work very very hard to keep DD safe.

ETA - We too were worried about allergies since DH has dog allergies (but not to our dogs thank God). Esp then when DD was coming into the picture. So we dealt with that thought a long time ago and came to the conclusion should that happen with DD and she was clearly in distress, one of our parents would gladly take our dogs. My ILs would love to have our dogs. So would my parents. And believe it or not, we actually only got them under that context b/c we could never have given them to a stranger.

But this is turning into a complete off topic from the OP question.

Re: wwyd??

I think this is one of those, you never know until you are in that situation

firstly, I teach my children to not bother or torment the dogs. If they got bit because they were messing with the dog, I would get the dog some training and REITERATE to my kids that we need to be nice to the dogs

if they bit my children unprovoked, I would still try training but consider rehoming, depending on the situation

I also believe that keeping an animal seperate from the family is cruel. My brother has done that with his dog and it's only made the situation more dire because now Ace is made to feel like he's no longer part of the pack- which breeds more hostility. That poor dog sits on the other side of a gate while everyone else is in another room because he can't be trusted.

.

I agree 100% and as much as I love my dog, I would rehome her before separating her from the rest of the family....that just breeds more resentment IMHO

Well I definitely agree with this. For me, in my case, it's just about 2 hours a day that my dog is on one side of the gate while we are right on the other. And I am constantly going back and forth between gated areas so he isn't ever alone anyway. I just keep him out of the living room where DD is roaming and all her toys are. Then when DH is home, one of us is always with the dogs, or we are all together with baby and dogs. For me, my dog, even if gated out of one room, is pretty much like being in the same room because he can see what's going on, I am constantly going back and forth, and he has the run of a few rooms.

But yes, to keep your dog in another room alone, esp for long periods, that is cruel and won't help the situation. And rehoming, to a GOOD home, is the better way possibly, to go.

Re: wwyd??

my parents dog that we;ve had for 15 yrs bit my neice. She was never around babies and hated kids who came over. Now she spends her days (parents watch neice) in her bed with her leash attached to the wall. She's 15 and sleeps all day so its not a huge deal.

If it happened with Maggie, I think I would separate them and try it out... but being isolated from the family is no way for an animal to live. If it happened to me and I trusted someone who wanted my dog, I would consider it.

Re: wwyd??

Im glad you posted this. I have what I believed was a loving poodle. We only got a poodle because we read they were wonderful with children (whom we are planning in the future) I have recently taken him with me to babysit for two children ages 7&8. He snaps at the children!! They aren't playing rough, they are old enough to know how to play with a dog nice. He doesn't hurt them but I was embarrassed & angry about his bad behavior. He is only 6 months so I know some of this is typical puppy behavior.

Im now horrified that he will bite his future little human siblings. I am taking him to obedience school but it's all very disheartening!!

If he ever hurt my real child I'm not sure what I would do. I love my puppy so much!!
