We are thinking now that we are expecting to talk with dhs parents about splitting their split level house in half. They would be upstairs we would be downstairs (main level). Has anyone done this before. If so did it work out?

Re: would you move in with in laws?

we will soon be moving into my parent's basement apartment in their house.
it's only temporary though and will allow us to save a lot of money, so it's worth the sacrifice.
we will have a seperate entrance and our own living space, so hopefully, it will work out well

in a heartbeat.

if they say the word rght now, we could be moved in by tonight Chat Icon

ETS- not sure if i would want it to be a 'forever' thing (unless it raelly were 2 completely separate apartments/living spaces), but i would be content with it for at least a couple of years.

NO and I get along well with my MIL. I have had friends do this and it put a strain on their relationship.

It would also be seperate entrance. We wouldnt be connected but I can understand why people would feel the opposite. I am unsure myself but I know right now I would want whats best for my child BUT I dont want to move. NY prices have to decrease.

Re: would you move in with in laws?

No. I think even if we had a separate entrance it would be watching when we come and go, etc., and I like my privacy too much. I also don't like people stopping by unannounced, and I feel like the temptation would be there if we were that close.

I could do it for a couple months, but after that, I'd need to be on my own. I moved out of my parents' house as soon as I was able and even though I struggled with $$ the independence was very, very important to me. I would never do it permanently unless absolutely necessary.

Re: would you move in with in laws?

No no and no...

DH and I have discussed having a house built with a basement, so if my parents are to split (since my mom has been talking about it) my mom could live with us...

She is the only one out of all our family we'd live with- shes very private and likes her space- just like us!

Re: would you move in with in laws?

NEVER EVER EVER with my in-laws. We already lived with my parents for about a year and a half, and it was fine. But my parents are not usual, they actually WANTED us to have privacy.

Re: would you move in with in laws?

I had to live with my in-laws last summer. DH, DS and myself were in one room and my FIL NEVER leaves the house except for an hour or two in the morning . IT was the longest summer of my life. So the answer is HELL NO never again

Re: would you move in with in laws?

Well.... My MIL lives in a 2 family MD. My FIL grew up in the house she lives in now. They lived there with my DH's grandparents. My MIL said that was a BIG mistake. Her MIL was always in their business and always entered . whenever she wanted. No Privacy! My DH's grandparents and my FIL are deceased, and now she still lives in the house.
My DH and I bought our house right before we got married. We thought that we weren't going to find a place to live in time. She said that if we had to we could always move in, but she knows how it was with her MIL and not that she would be that way, but she thinks it's better off that we have our own place.

Re: would you move in with in laws?

I think it depends on your in-laws. For me it would only mean my father-in-law and yes, I would consider it. But he is very laid-back and pleasant and would be EXTREMELY grateful to have us there, so I don't think it would be a bad experience.

Re: would you move in with in laws?

My MIL lives with us and will live with us forever. I really don't mind, she has her own apartment. I feel bad that its in the basement, hopefully, our next house she can be upstairs instead. She helps me out a lot with the baby and with laundry and stuff. She irons DH's shirts, which too me is the greatest because I hate ironing, especially long sleeved tailored shirts that he wears. Sometimes, it is stressful but I try not to let it get to me too much. I try to focus on all the positive things she does for us. Although, I will admit I had a breakdown 2 weeks ago regarding her, but I was PMSing also. Chat Icon
