Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
I left DS in the car once I ran into dunkin donuts....I will never ever do it again..I really do not know what I was thinking at that moment ! Yes it easier to leave him in the car...but then I always think of the worst case scenario .

I have left DS in the car if I forgot something in the house, he is in the car in the driveway and I go inside!
Ditto....15 seconds tops.

I have left DS in the car to run back into the house to grab something I forgot, like his sippy. I jump out of the car, leaving a window cracked but the doors locked, run into the house and run right back out. I would say, in total, I've left him for about 1 minute. Other than that, I wouldn't leave him.
ditto. i could never leave him alone and run into a store. id be too scared of that split second i took my eye off the car.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
I wasn't sure what to answer, so I put "other." I won't go back in my house if he's in the car, but I live in a co-op so it's a bit of a longer walk to get back in. I will go put a shopping cart back in it's place after I've strapped him in the carseat. When I do that I lock the doors even though I'm never going more than about 15 feet away. Or I'll park in front of a mailbox and run quickly to mail a letter. Again, 10-15 feet away, doors locked. This probably all falls under "never" b/c I won't go IN a place if DS is in the car. And I'm so not a nervous parent in general lol. But there have been plenty of times I wish it would've been okay to just run in somewhere

Only in my driveway or if I'm pumping gas.
same here. I've been tempted to just run in somewhere, especially if DS is sleeping, but have been too scared that something might happen and I'd never be able to forgive myself.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
The only time I've ever left my kids in the car is to run back into my house or run into my parents' house to quickly drop off/pick up something. The car is in the driveway & in sight the whole time in both cases. The only other time is at the post office to pop something into the mailbox. I'm only a few feet from the car in that case. I've never left them in the car to go INSIDE anywhere other than the house. I wouldn't be comfortable. The 'what ifs' would drive me crazy.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
in my driveway often (bc I forgot something, have to pee, drop groceries etc) to return books in the library drop box, mail a letter. as long as I can see them and I am right there, it's fine. my block is so quiet people rarely drive by my home anyway

Dh did it once to pick me up from a LIF Christmas gtg a few years back. He left my, then 9 year old in the car with my 2 little ones. When he told me they were in the car ( in front of 4 lif girls) I was like don't you know I am going to be talked about for the next decade. .

what about when you are bringing dc shopping? don't you need to leave him in the car to grab a cart, bring it near your car, and put the cart cover on before putting dc inside??? if not, please explain how else you do it...

Oh right, that too. Forgot about that. I try to park near the wagons if possible though, which generally it is pretty close.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
In front of my house, car doors locked, keys in my hand of course because of the paranoia of locking my keys in the car.......just run back in & grab something I forgot!
Currently (DS is almost 3) I do not feel comfortable running into anyplace, even if I COULD see him from the window..

Unless the carts are like 1 spot away, I take DS out, carry him to the cart, sit him down in the back part & put the seat cover on, then put him in.

This is what I do.
Well, what I actually do is avoid the food shopping, but in a pinch, this is my method as well.
Unfortunately, you have to figure that you might not be able to do this on the way back because you'll have your groceries, too, and you can't carry everything. So, you're risking either being the jerk who leaves their cart in the adjacent parking spot or leaving DC in the car while you return it to the appropriate spot.
I end up being the jerk because I'm paranoid.
To answer the OP, only in the driveway, door locked, for a few seconds while I run in the house to grab or deposit something.
I once left him in the car in the driveway while I ran in and peed. It was probably 30 seconds but I won't do it again because I felt too guilty.

I leave the boys in the car to run back into the house all of the time. I've also ran up to friends/families doors. Other than that I never leave them in a car alone.
Actually when I went to pick p Xaviers bday cake from the lady who made it I left Rylan sleeping in the car because she needed help. I felt like I was going to pass out though because it was dark out. I was looking out the window every 2 seconds.

I carry Xavier and hold Rylans hand to the cart or into the store if I don't see one outside. I got really good at putting the cover on with one hand...lol.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
I have left them in the car only when one is sleeping and the other is not. I cant carry 2 kids at a time. I also have left them when I have to pick up my DD at my mom's. I leave DS in the car while i get my DD.
I would never anywhere else.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
Usually I will go out of my way to go to a full-service gas station to avoid leaving DD in the car but the other day the line there was sooo long and we were running late so I went to one where I had to pay inside. I waited for the pump closest to the door, literally ran into the store with my eyes on teh car the whole time - it was off, with the doors locked (and it was cold outside that day, so no open windows).
I hated soing that - my stomach was in knots - even though I was only in there paying less than a minute - and teh worst thing was when I did get back to the car she was hysterically crying I don't think I will be doing that again anytime soon.

King Kullen has the spot reserved by the wagons so that helps. Traders Joes ...no....I always have to return the cart.

Re: When is ok (if ever) to leave your kids in the car?
There have been times where i've left the two of them in the car to do something very quickly BUT the car is always RIGHT there and in view. For example, the library book drop or running back to the house to grab a diaper.
The car is always off and locked and its no longer than 15 seconds tops. I can't imagine taking both boys out of the car, walking them to the book drop and then buckling them back in. If the car is off and locked and you walk a few feet, what can honestly happen?
I'm not meaning to sound ignorant...I mean i would NEVER go in a store and shop while my kids are in a car, but something that involves walking a few steps from the car and then back isn't a big deal to me...
