What would you do? Re: bathroom
We have a small 1/2 bath downstairs that is tiled from floor to ceiling with granite tile. I know it is $$$ but it just seems so overwhelming and I feel like it makes the bathroom look smaller. Plus, I feel like I can't hang a cabinet or pictures b/c of the granite tiles (first, we will need to buy a special drill & 2nd I am afraid it won't look right). DH and I have been talking and don't know what we should do. These are our options:
1) Leave the granite tile and hang a cabinet, pictures, etc. and see how it looks
2) Remove all the granite from the walls, but leave the floor. Once we rip down the tile on the walls we will most likely have to re-sheetrock the walls.
3) Take down the tile half way down the walls (leave the tile 1/2 way up) and get someone in to cut the extra granite tiles we have to make a nice border/trim and than we will still most likely have to sheetrock and fix the walls above.
If you have pictures with tile from floor to ceiling can you post and also if you have tile 1/2 way up. Thanks!
ETA: I found a pic I took from when we did our walk through before we bought the house. I feel like the granite tile in the whole bathroom is too much. But maybe if I add a cabinet and pictures it will help break it up a bit.
And I know, the shell sink has go to go (And the black toilet seat cover isn't mine!)

Exactly!
I'd probably go with option 3, if possible. It's nice tile, but too much of it.

Tell me about it! It's beautiful granite just too much. I guess I am used to it now after living here for over a year, but at first, it made me feel dizzy and claustrophic. I would leave the door open while I was going to the bathroom

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
I would take it off the walls entirely and just paint the walls. I have never seen granite, up the wall halfway, as tile is often halfway up the wall. I don't know if that would look right. I could be wrong, maybe it would look fine. I guess I would take down the top half first and see how it looks.
I agree, it is way too much of it. And you are right, it is very complicated to hang things, as you would have to drill through the granite.
Is there even a shower in this bathroom? I wonder why they would do the entire bathroom that way, if you don't have a shower even, you would not really accumulate moisture.

No, it is just a 1/2 bath on the 1st floor of our house.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
For a quick solution that isn't too much money, and should help with breaking up the tile, and getting storage, is a SpaceSaver, or Etagere. Target has some:
SpaceSavers at Target
They are $100, give or take. They are freestanding, so no drilling into the wall. You may even be able to keep the glass shelf you already have.
May not be a permanent solution, but it's quick and pretty cheap.

i see your issue..it looks really closed in...the tile is really nice..If you are able to do it relatively easily I would do the take down half the wall and leave half and the floor..

I vote for option 3. Leave it on half this way you can put up a mirror or picture, towel bar etc.

Then you really don't need to do anything to the walls but paint. But if you like it, see what it looks like with the top half removed.

I would leave it.. that is amazing and very $$
I would change your sink.. I would get the free hanging sink that comes out of the wall with no base....
it changes the loook of the bathroom.
I would also, get a nice rug..
leave the grantie easy to clean and long lasting

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
I'm in the minority but I would leave it as is, get a new sink - maybe something different and modern.
I would go ahead and get the special drill and hang a photo or cabinet. Break it up with a nice rug and call it a day.
To be honest - it looks really clean and really nice IMO. I wouldn't do much.

Beautiful tile - just too much of it.
Hmmm... I don't see it working halfway so you'd have to take it all down.
I wouldn't hang cabinets in a bathroom that small though.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
How much money are you willing spend on this half bath?
Taking down the tile and re-sheetrocking and painting could be thousands if you don't do it yourself.

I was going to ask the same thing. This sounds like an expensive project to take down something that was very expensive to do. If you have the extra cash, go for it (take it all down excpet for the floor). But I could never justify spending all that money at this point in my life. I would get the drill and hang some things, get a rug, etc. to change to look a bit. good luck!

Well anyone can take down the tile. So they are capable of that. Resheetrocking they may not be able to do but a small bath like that should not cost thousands. The money comes into play when re-tiling the bathroom (which they do not need to do, and I don't think she necessarily wants to do).
If you do the demolition yourself, that is where most of the $ is saved, and if you are only resheetrocking that should not cost that much. The main issue is finding someone to do the sheetrocking if you don't do it yourself.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
For a quick fix, I would replace the sink at the least (and the toilet cover). Those stands might help break up the tile also and give you more storage.
Long term, I would probably remove half the tile going up the walls. It's really too much--it's nice, but overdone, especially for a small bathroom.

I agree.
I would only add that I would redo everything. I don't like that tile at all. It looks very 70's like. If anything I would remove the wall tile, redo the sheetrock and leave the floor. If you decide to do the floor you can tile over tile as long as the floor is in good shape, no cracks and is level.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
I just had my guest bathroom gutted and redone so I know bathrooms can get a little expensive.
Especially since it's a powder room I would just leave the granite. I would: 1) change the sink 2) change the mirror 3) maybe even the accessories. 4) get a nice rug to break up the wall from floor ( I think that is the real problem)
The wall actually looks like the faux finish type paint but than you see the floor and it's too much. I would try the inexpensive fixes before taking down the granite.
Look at Restoration Hardware for some bathroom ideas!!

Even though that is a nice neutral color, I don't like it. Too much of it.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
The space is too small for all that granite IMO. I wouldn't want to destroy it though either....hmm. Definitely need a new sink but I think ultimately you can make it look really cute with no granite on the walls at all.

Re: What would you do? Re: bathroom
I think option 3. That way you don't lose the benefit of how the granite looks but you can also add personal touches to the room to make it your own. I agree that all granite makes it look smaller.
