Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?

For those who take kids trick or treating on Halloween, how to you handle handing out candy at your house? Does one person stay home to hand out candy? Do you just leave out a bowl?

Last year, we left out a bowl, but we think there is a good chance that the whole bowl was taken by one or two kids, because saw a few middle schoolish age kids coming around the corner as we walked away from our house that looked a little too excited to see an unattended bowl. We also live in an are where kids would feel emboldened to take the whole bowl because our neighbors can't really see our porch.

I think we'll probably leave a bowl out again because I want to do my part, and our kids are young so we both want to trick or treat with them, but I'm just wondering what everyone else does.

Re: Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?

I used to and then realized kids weren't taking just one or two but the whole bowl so I had to stop.
I feel bad because we both like to go out trick or treating with DD so nobody is home for a while- and I also hate getting stuck with so many left overs but- it is what it is.
We generally don't go out with DD for long.
So we try to go when there is a lull and we usually get back in time for more.

I've done both. When we first moved to our new home, we bought it days before Halloween and we were not home so we just left out a few bags of candy in a bowl with a sign. They left the bowl, but all the candy was gone. Normally we have one parent go out with the kids and then the other stays home, but my kids are getting older so I'm not sure if they want me to go out with them.

For the past few years we have left the bowl out with a note. We have always come back to candy still left in the bowl. But that may be an anomaly because not too many kids come down our block.

We leave a big pumpkin out. Most of our trick or treaters are little kids so I know they aren’t taking the entire bowl.

I always leave a bowl out with a note to take two. The past few years I’ve come home to a few pieces left in the bowl. I honestly don’t care if they take all the candy. I buy it for the trick or treaters so let them have it.

Last year someone took my bowl so I won’t be leaving a bowl out. I might put some in a small box with a note but won’t go crazy. We will take the kids out for a small time frame so it shouldn’t be too long without candy.

I usually leave it out, but I won't again. Last year I saw on my camera that a group of punks took most of it, then knocked my witch over outside. Little jerks! I even wrote a note that said smile for the camera and take ONE!

I leave out the bowl with a note but we have a camera by our steps so maybe that deters the greedy ones.

Side note, how many pieces do you hand out?

The past 2 years, we left out a bowl while we went out trick or treating. But, one group of kids took all the candy AND MY BOWL both years, so that isn't happening again this year. We are only out for about an hour or two so we will give out candy before and afterwards.

This. I'm not sure the candy was even touched.

We leave it outside. Don't care really if its all taken. Better than coming back to a full bowl that you have to eat.

2 years ago our bowl with all the candy in it was taken. And last year our Ring doorbell camera caught a few kids dumping the entire contents of our bowl into their bags. Both times it happened after dark. We know bc we stop home for a little while for a break and then go back out, and both times the bowl was still there. This year we plan to only leave the bowl out while its light out.

I leave out a bowl. I could care less if one or two kids takes the entire thing.

I think this is best case scenario. You know most the kids are getting candy from you, but then at the end of the night they take the rest so you're not stuck with a bunch of a candy lol. I don't care if one kid takes a bunch or a few or whatever, I just want the other kids that come by to get something. I guess I'll just leave it out and see what happens. I wish I could stay home and hand out the candy, because I love doing that, but I also obviously want to see my kids trick or treating.

Yes, I feel bad if a kid comes to my house and wastes their time walking up the driveway and they get no candy because I am out with my kids. Normally we aren't gone that long, but their is usually a few pieces of candy left in it- we have the ring this year so it will be interesting to watch what goes on.

We leave a bowl out. There was still candy left in our bowl when we returned.

We do not leave candy out. We just give out before or after we go trick or treating.

We leave a bowl out and usually have candy left-- we dont get a ton of trick or treaters. I will put half my candy in the bowl for while we are out T&T'ing and leave the other half of the candy inside for when we get back home in case we have more T&T'ers after we get back.

I usually give 2 pieces of candy to start and then adjust up or down depending on how my stash is doing toward the end of the night/

Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?

We leave a silver food tray out. No one wants that! LOL

We've never had an issue of kids taking the whole thing, but if they did, I don't really think I'd care very much. Less for me to have to eat or donate later on.

We leave out a bowl with candy in it, with a note saying to be nice and don't be greedy.

for the past 3 years it has worked - we'll continue to do so until some jerk ruins it!

We're usually home by 7ish though, so the bigger kids come around later i think - and our block has a bunch of people usually on it so maybe they feel like they can't get away with stealing it

on a side note though - one halloween we had our pumpkin stolen, and a fake one left in its place!
we put that fake pumpkin out every year and laugh about it Chat Icon

Heard it’s a game for the teenagers who can get the most bowls.
