What kind of bowls are you guys leaving out? I use a bowl I got from the dollar store. They can do what they please with it!

I use a cheap dollar store bowl also. I have it to hold the candy not to be taken, that is called stealing (value of the bowl is irrelevant).

Re: Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?

While I don't want left over candy in the house and I am more than glad to give out handfuls at the end of the night to get rid of it, I think it just bothers me that some punk asses think it's ok to take it ALL.
It's more the principal than anything else.

Of course it’s stealing but I kind of expect that if I leave the bowl out. Do I just have a very low opinion of humans to blame myself if I leave something unattended and it’s stolen?

I USUALLY take DS and DH will stay and hand out, and then sometimes we take shifts and switch. DS just turned 9 and DH thinks this will be the last year DS wants to trick or treat (Not sure why b/c DS LOOOVES to do this)... SO we are all going together.

I said we should just leave a bowl out and he laughed hysterically at me..lol.

Oh well...we'll go together and hand out candy when we get home.

We have done it but in the past years the kids were hogs. We hung out in the neighbors driveway with a chiminea last year and saw the little jerks on our steps dumping the whole bowl in their stash. My dh even ran over to yell at them lol. Wont be doing that again...

Exactly. Its really not that I care about the bowl (no ones ever stolen ours) or the candy, it's just crappy behavior because then the other kids come and get nothing.
We do it when we take the kids out. We're not usually gone that long. Though the older they get, the more they want to stay out.
One year we came back to candy in the bowl - but it was old, crappy candy (think jolly ranchers and tootsie rolls past their prime) that the kids I guess decided to "trade" for our chocolate. Chat Icon

I went TOT when I was 22 (I was taking my niece and nephew out). I dressed up as a soccer player. I thought hey why not. I grabbed my pillowcase and got some extra candy for the kids. I looked about 16 (I’m one of the lucky ones to look young). I got a few strange looks and comments, but you’d be surprised how many people gave me candy, lol.

I went again when I was 30 (with niece and nephews— I’m not some old freak who just goes out TOTing), but I didn’t have a pillowcase for candy and thought I was a bit too old for this. People will still give you candy when you are with the kids, even if you don’t say Trick or Treat.

They don’t really do Halloween here (there are some that do and I have seen TOTers, but I haven’t gotten any. Instead they do a big thing before Lent. They have a parade, everyone dresses up, and they throw candy to everyone from the parade. That’s their Halloween I guess.

This. I remember when I was young I didn’t take the whole bowl, but I would take one extra if they had the good stuff. Chat Icon

And then remember shaving cream (and trying to get the perfect noozle for it) and eggs and toilet papering houses? For the noozle I would either get it from hairspray or stick a pin in the original and burn it. Hello? Fire with an aerosol can? That was really dumb. I guess it’s just a right of passage.

My DS is 10 and is going trick or treating. I went tricking or treating till I was 16. I can't believe you won't open the door for a 13 yr old?? That is still middle school. The middle school kids dress up still in DS school.

Halloween is supposed to be about having fun- let them have fun. As long as they aren't being aholes or destroying property, who cares?
I'd prefer to let kids stay kids as long as possible.
Everyone grows up wayyyy too fast these days.

I used to think the same but when you think about it, isn’t better for a 13 to be out collecting candy and not vandalizing the neighborhood? Also, kids mature at different rates. I just feel like what’s the harm? Let them have their candy.

Omg so true, the 6th graders in my sons school are tall as heck. They look like 8th grade and HS kids.

Exactly, I used to take my little cousins 14+ and trick or treat with them, but it was the one day when I was wasn’t doing some stupid sh!t when I was a teen. Lol

For the past few years we have left the bowl out with a note. We have always come back to candy still left in the bowl. But that may be an anomaly because not too many kids come down our block.

same for us.
