I USUALLY take DS and DH will stay and hand out, and then sometimes we take shifts and switch. DS just turned 9 and DH thinks this will be the last year DS wants to trick or treat (Not sure why b/c DS LOOOVES to do this)... SO we are all going together.
I said we should just leave a bowl out and he laughed hysterically at me..lol.
Oh well...we'll go together and hand out candy when we get home.
Really? 10 year olds go trick or treating. Teenagers go Trick or Treating. I can't imagine telling my 10 year olds no more! That's nuts!
Yeah, 10 is still young. Now at 13 I won't open the door for you anymore, but 10 is definitely still trick or treating age!
I used to think the same but when you think about it, isn’t better for a 13 to be out collecting candy and not vandalizing the neighborhood? Also, kids mature at different rates. I just feel like what’s the harm? Let them have their candy.

Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?
Yup, I agree with that Nell! My son is 19 and STILL goes Trick or Treating with my 11 year old. He has special needs, and is still very much child like. We have had people say "aren't you a little too old" and I just roll my eyes and move on. It's a freaking piece of candy. People are so grouchy these days over stupid crap!

I don't get that just give the candy out. I would give to teens or young adults with small kids.
I would kind of be suspect with adults by themselves only because of security and halloween can be creepy. LOL

Yep. One time I had a dad walk up to the door with his little daughter- he was dressed up too, it was cute. He asked- do you mind if I take one too? I was like, of course! Like I said, I have zero desire to have 10 lbs of candy left over so I can eat it all myself. Because trust me, I will!

Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?
I don't care if an adult is with the kids or an older sibling , or special needs or a diabetic who needs a banana! But yes I do think teens is too old, but that is I guess what was installed in me growing up. It's pretty much a moot point for me because I don't really get any TOT'ers, but sometimes I do go to my moms to help her and yeah Im not comfortable with her opening the door alone to a pack of teens who aren't in costume and don't even say a word to you. So i'm the devil, so be it!

Why do people do that on here? Give one scenario and then when users disagree the story changes drastically. There’s also a difference between a 13yr old which is what you originally said and teens that are older (even though to me idc). I was still dressing up at 13, you’re barely a teenage at that age. I can totally see my son dressing up at 13.
Also not wearing costumes makes a difference to me unless you’re with kids. A group of older teens not really partaking in the custom just walking around asking for candy being rude would annoy me. Atleast paint your face, say trick or treat and thank you. lol.

Uh the story didn't change, I said a pack of teens, that can be 13, 14 , 15 whatever , so Im not sure what you are reading. You want me to say it straight out - fine 13 is too old, you're in high school, get a life! Is that better for you Sash? Honestly, not everyone has to agree with you. TOT is for young kids, that's my opinion and guess what, I'm allowed to have one.

Umm no you didn’t say a pack of teens and Im reading your post. you explicitly mentioned an age in your oringinal post - “Yeah, 10 is still young. Now at 13 I won't open the doorfor you anymore..” - so that’s what I & everyone else read.
Your follow up post addressed kids being rude and not dressed up; which is different
Also at 13 you’re still in JHS unless you skipped a grade or graduated young.
And I didn’t agree with you not the other way around.

So do you ask for ID before you hand out the candy?

Re: Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?
DS and DW like to stay at home and give out candy. DS (15) has for years, preferred to stay home and see everyone in costume. DD (12) and I go ToT for a while, and then she hands out candy. We never have a time where nobody is home, so we don't leave candy out.
If a bunch of teenagers come to the house, I always give candy. I may make a comment if they're not in costume, but not usually. I would much rather a group of teenagers say to each other months later, "Wait, that's the house that gave us candy at Halloween, we shouldn't mess with their property".
Plus, if they are not doing anything harmful, why begrudge a group of teens trying to have some fun? Halloween is originally an adult holiday. I don't see there being an age limit on having fun with friends and participating in a holiday tradition.
I also don't know if they have any type of issues. They could be on the spectrum, so they are mentally much younger. They could have social anxiety issues, so this is a huge deal for them.

Re: Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?
If an 18 year old comes to my door with no costume and a plastic bag and is partaking in one last year of his/her youth before the harsh reality of the real world kicks in, you bet your a$$ I'm giving him/her candy.
Life is too short to rush growing up.
And also, I usually leave out a bowl if no one is home. I don't care if kids take it all, whatever. Enjoy the thrill of the risk of stealing the candy that is yours to take anyway, haha.

DS will turn 13 on Halloween, It would break my heart if someone doesn't give him candy because of his age, since he is so looking forward to it. He dresses up with his friends and they go with some little siblings and, at the end, it is like his birthday celebration. I love he still likes it and sits down searching and looking for his halloween costume... Fortnite this year

Re: Trick or Treating - Do you leave out candy?
I haven’t left out a bowl, because I really enjoy seeing the trick or treaters come up to the door and actually giving them the candy myself. I do take my kids trick or treating though, so I feel bad that some kids might stop by during that time when we’re not there. But we don’t go out for long anyway, my kids get tired fast & how much candy do they really need anyway.

I leave a bowl out. Most of our neighborhood are very young families. So we haven't had a problem.
I don't get many teens, but I actually like seeing them out tot for many of the reasons people already mentioned and more!

We do not leave candy out. We just give out before or after we go trick or treating.
Same. I've seen too many people say the whole bowl was taken by one or two kids... bowl and all.

The best was the quote in that post saying "get a life" to 13 year olds who trick or treat What exactly should a 13 year old be doing instead of trick or treating that would be considered "having a life"? Smoking weed? Drinking beers in the woods? Or vandalizing houses and egging cars? Or are we talking about more mature, worldly pursuits like going to a symphony or exploring the MOMA?

I love when the older kids come later in the night because I empty the rest of my bowl in their bags to get rid of the rest of my candy
Thank god for those older TOTers!
P.S. when I was 14, I was too good to TOT and was egging houses, drinking 40's & twisting them up. Would much rather see them come by with pillow cases!
