Re: Transgendered Child and School

Here's another article about a young child born a boy who identified herself as being a girl from a very young age.

Whether you (collective) want to believe it or not, there are children who are as young as 6 or even younger who identify themselves as being the opposite sex. It's not their imagination, it's not the parents forcing them to be one sex over another, these children KNOW!!!

ETA: From the article - "When she found him, he was dancing in front of the mirror with his penis tucked between his legs. “Look, Mom, I’m a girl,” he told her." - He was 3.

"“Brandon, God made you a boy for a special reason,” she told him before they said prayers one night when he was 5, the first part of a speech she’d prepared. But he cut her off: “God made a mistake,” he said."

Re: Transgendered Child and School

My biggest question is- what made the school change it's mind? Why was she allowed to use the girls' room for a year and a half and then suddenly it wasn't okay anymore?

If all the other students believe that she's a girl- how would parents even know that she has a penis?

It's a tough situation for everyone involved. Chat Icon

I feel for the kid, and his parents - I tryly do - However, I have issues with accomodating ONE child's feelings, at the expense of EVERYONE elses .....

I think this sums up how I feel. There is alot of discussion about young children knowing they are 'different' and knowing at an early age etc. I don't think thats an issue here. So lets say she really wants to be a a girl and one day will be a girl. Great no argument from me. The point is that every child's feelings cannot be accommodated for. We would never have gender based sports, bathrooms, lockers, etc. All such things would have to unisex and then no one will feel left out.

For the comments about bathroom stalls in girls room, yes there are but not always in the boys room. If a transgendered male (really a female) wants to use the boys room that would have to be ok too. It cannot be one way.

I don't know I think the Nurse's office is the best answer.

Re: Transgendered Child and School

I've never been faced with this, but I would think if my family was in this situation I would try to draw lines as factually as possible.

I.e. Biologically, you have male parts and people with male parts go in this bathroom. That doesn't mean you can't wear dresses, grow your hair long, play barbies and paint your nails, have a boyfriend, whatever may be. However, these bathrooms are setup for people who have male parts (urinals, etc) and these bathrooms are set up for people who have female parts (stalls to sit down).

He feels he is a girl. Let him go with that and don't make it a boy/girl issue, make it about the anatomy.

But what happens when boys start to see a "girl" in the bathroom? I'm sure this little girl is not standing up to pee, she's probably sitting. I still think it's better for her to be in the girl's room. There are stalls so no one can see she has a penis. When she emerges from the stall, her genitals are covered and she looks like a girl. How strange would it be if an outward appearing girl is standing at a urinal in a men's room or boy's room?

Am I the only one who thinks that it's a little ridiculous for a 6 year old to be transgendered? Isn't this more the parents's doing than the kids'? I mean, I TOTALLY understand the boy wanting/liking things that are more girl oriented, but this seems like a way over the top move at only 6 years old.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing and was shocked to see that no one up until you pointed it out. I mean the kids passport says he is a girl??? I have a 5.5 yr old and I cannot imagine how any of this is going down.

I suggest you read Jax430's response to this thread since she is a preschool psychologist.

The only reason why people should feel bad for this child or other children like her is because there are judgmental people in this world who don't and choose not to understand how very real this is. Don't feel bad for her because at the young age of 6, she already knows who she is and who she's supposed to be.

You are not the only one who feels this way. There is no way a 6 year old can possibly comprehend what it truly means to change genders.

With that said, at that age I don't see the big deal of about boys and girls using the same bathroom when there are only private stalls available regardless of the transgender issue. I wouldn't prefer it, but it's not something I would counter sue over.

I agree as well. The parents are using her as a social experiment. 6 is too young to have to deal with this.

Of course I want my child to be happy which is why I wouldn't add stress, anxiety and confusion into the life of a six year old. IMO these parents actions when dealing with a six year old are doing more harm than good. I don't see it as supportive I see it as detrimental actually. A six year old isn't capable of understanding sexuality or even gender fully so IMO dragging it out to this extent IS detrimental. If the kid wants to wear girls clothes, costumes, etc. fine - no problem - there are plenty of boys that do this and plenty of girls that do the reverse. EVEN if the child identifies with a girl over a boy. That's fine - let them act girly, dress girly etc. BUT to tell the child they are in fact now a girl - to put that on the passport and to encourage them to use a girls bathroom is ridiculous at this age IMO. At this point the fact of the matter is the kid has a penis so he should go in the boys bathroom - whether he identifies with girls, thinks he is a girl, dresses like a girl etc. is irrelevant. He is currently a boy. And, really, I think that is the only issue here. If my 5.5 year old said mommy I am a grown up I am smart and tall and mature so I am going to use the grown ups bathroom I would just to explain to him that it is a matter of numbers - he is 5 and a kid so he has to use the kids bathroom - even if he is in fact more like an adult than a kid. I think drawing attention to this child is the worst thing the parents can do to the kid at this age. He already feels and acts different - now the spotlight is on his differences. Again, I am talking with respect to THIS AGE only and this is my opinion.

I am not judging the child - I am judging the parents. Sorry, I don't agree with what they are doing.

And, I'm sorry but a 6 year old is not fully capable of "knowing who she is and who she is supposed to be" in the true sense of the words. I'm not doubting or questioning or judging the issue of being transgender - I'm saying that they don't understand the issues that go into being "trangender." I agree with the above poster - it is simply about anatomy. The girl has a penis so she should go in the boys bathroom. At this age it really should be that simple. I think telling a six year old that becasue they feel like a girl they ARE in fact a girl is beyond confusing and stressful for the child.

Agree with all this. But at the same time, MY child is my priority and while I know this is not something a person chooses, i dont want to have to explain this to my kid. (i dont want to discuss anything sex related at 6Chat Icon ) nor would i want my boys sharing a locker with a girl or vice versa. As a mother I need to do what i feel is right to protect my children too.

Being gay and being transgender are two very different things. Being gay means you are attraction to the same sex, I don't know about you but I wasn't attracted to ANYONE until I was probably 9 years old. But this decision to start identifying their boy as a girl was made long before this child was 6 years old. I have absolutely no problem with this child being transgender and I fully support her being treated as girl since that is how they have raised her since the very beginning. I just think they should have given her a little more time to develop into herself before making the drastic choice of changing her gender before first grade.

ITA. Well said. I saw a story on TV about a child who was living as the opposite sex since toddlerhood. Next step of course, they were discussing sex change and taking hormones at around age 11. The child was beyond confused. How could ANYONE think a child could be so sure of who they are at that age is mind blowing to me. The child was very confused, not sure what to do, especially when it came to life altering surgery or hormones.

Wayyy too much for a child to be allowed to do, wayyy too large of a decision a child should have to make or be allowed to make.

Well then it's a good thing you aren't a parent of that child.

I say that with NO snark whatsoever. You have obviously not read any of the research or dealt with any children who are transgendered. If you had, you know that it IS possibly to know that you are the "wrong" sex from a very very young age and I believe that what the parents are fighting for is more than appropriate.

It has NOTHING to do with what you "believe" and has EVERYTHING to do with what this child feels in her deepest sense of herself.

This all boils down to one thing: stop judging what you DON'T KNOW.

Exactly. In fact, it would be a hell of a lot more stressful and confusing for this child to be told "you're a boy," when this goes against everything she feels inside. Anatomically, yes this child is a boy, but that's it. Her gender identity is female. It is VERY different than a child fantasizing about being a princess.

I feel bad for the child - my guess is he comes from a very dysfunctional home.

Actually if you did some research, you will see that it gender identity disorder can and has occurred in young children. And your comment that assumes that this child comes from a dysfunctional home is worthy of several Chat Icon

Transgendered Child and School

I really do not think the issue is that the child is transgender. That is a personal decision between her and her family and is no one else's business but the issue is that even though the child thinks she is a girl, she is a boy physically. A boy, whether or not he wears dresses and believes he is a girl should not be in a girls bathroom. If you don't delineate by physical gender then we might as well make everything gender neutral. I read the article and it seems that the school was pretty accepting of the child and just asked that she use a different bathroom. I see nothing wrong with that at all. I am all too familiar with discrimination with having a special needs child and I understand fighting for what you believe but the school gave them, in my opinion, a viable solution. Sometimes you need to weigh the pros and cons of a situation and now the parents put this poor child into the papers and her life will never be the same.
