How do you feel about this subject? Do you think a child should use a restroom based on their feelings of who they are or based on their gentalia?

Personally I don't feel comfortable with my daughter sharing the restroom or lockers rooms etc with a child who does not have the same genitals as her, even though she has a brother and may be previously exposed.

Re: Transgendered Child and School

honestly, I am torn about this one. I really feel for the transgendered child, but I can also understand about how parents of girls would feel as they grow up and use the same restroom.

I don't really see a solution that fits everyone here

I look at it this way, he thinks of himself as a girl. Therefore when he gets older, i dont think those typical feelings will be there. He will most likely still dress, act like a girl. So I wouldnt have an issue with him using the girls room. I actually think it will be safer for him as he gets older.

The girls bathroom has stalls. No one sees anything. I say let the kid feel comfortable.

Re: Transgendered Child and School

I feel for the kid, and his parents - I tryly do - However, I have issues with accomodating ONE child's feelings, at the expense of EVERYONE elses .....

He's not female, regardless of how he feels about himself, he is physically not a female - so he doesn't belong in the girls bathroom, locker room etc - I think iit's completely inappropriate, and I think it's unfair to the girls to have to be made to feel uncomfortable by the presence of a boy in the bathroom/locker room.

If he's nervous, aftraid etc (probably with good reason, unfortunately) of using the boys' facilities, I think the school should help him and allow use of the nurse's bathroom, faculty bathroom or something like that But I don't think that he should be granted access to the girls' facilities simply because he feels he is a girl (Simply is a bad word, nothing about this is simple)

Colorado will lose.

The child is a girl (by state license and passport). She can use the girl's bathroom. Until they check the genitals of everyone going in, this child is considered a girl.

As for exposure to seeing a penis... seriously?

Re: Transgendered Child and School

wow that's a tough one. i agree that the bathroom has stalls, so the children wouldn't be exposed to anything. however when it comes to using a locker room where they may be changing I can see why parents would be uncomfortable with that. But at the same time i don't think she should use the boys facilities either. I really feel for all sides here, i think the school is in a tough position - they did offer the faculty restrooms and nurses bathroom as options as well, though I would think that just makes the child feel different.

Locker rooms have stalls too. This really is not as big of a deal as most make it to be. I saw a special on recently about this, and I feel for the kids. They don't choose this. They are wired this way.

Transgendered Child and School

We had this issue at our middle school and the locker room. Parents were very uncomfortable with their daughters changing with a boy. He was a boy for the past 6 years in the school but came back that year as a girl so the fellow peers were really confused at the age of 12 what was going on. The school decided it was best for the child to change in the nurses office as she still had the parts of a boy.

Re: Transgendered Child and School

Looks like the school is trying to be accomodating.

Taken from the article:

"She could instead use the boys' bathroom, gender-neutral faculty bathrooms or the nurse's bathroom, the district said."

I'm torn. On the one hand, I wonder why other students should be made to feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, why should this girl be singled out? Like others have said - the girl's bathroom has stalls.

Side note, the lawyers name is Dude. Awesome.

This is a totally different situation though. In this case, I would say yes, use the nurse's office

Re: Transgendered Child and School

can't read the article right now but...

As far as the bathroom goes.. who cares? AJ has one bathroom right now in her room. Its not a boy or girl bathroom its a bathroom. I use the toliet at home where my hubby is. I have worked in places that have a unisex bathroom. Makes no difference to me. I guess my only concern would be piss on the seat but even the girls do that!

lockers? I feel for the child. Sure the child won't care, but the other children may ridicule and harass it. Now at puberty its a whole other ball of wax.

But frankly just give them a private area. In Middle school we had a small cubby in front of our showers in the locker. You were expected to be dressed at ALL times unless in that small area which was curtained off.

tough one still.

But what makes it a different situation? I'm not trying to be snarky - I'm really curious about other's opinions on this b/c I keep going over it in my head and the more I think about the whole situation the more upset I get for EVERYONE .......is there a 'best' way to handle this ???

Re: Transgendered Child and School

I feel for the kid- I really do. But- I feel for the other kids and parents who are uncomfortable with this too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the first comment.

"Everyone has the right to their own opinion... but not to their own reality.
I may be 100% convinced that I am a world famous astronaut. I may be absolutely sure of it, but it doesn't mean that NASA has to give me a ride to the space station.
My opinion does not change the fact that I am not an astronaut. Being an astronaut is not subjective."

His/Her passport and ID say "female" because his parents checked that box when they filled it out. It doesn't change the fact that s/he has male genitalia.

Honestly, at 6 I don't think it's a big deal for him/her to use the girls room- I think the problem arises when s/he gets older, genitalia gets bigger and the other kids are more aware of differences.

JMHO.

This comment cracked me up too (just to clarify- I don't think she or her parents should hide anything- but it is a good point)

"But the parents were trying to keep it low key, I mean it isn't like they died his hair purple or got CNN involved or anything. They might want to consider home school through college ..."

ETA: this one kinda makes sense to me too...

"How does a 6 your old feel it would rather like to be the pincushion rather than the needle? Is he able to grasp what the difference is between men and women? The real issue is, he can only grasp the artificial, superficial differences in the way kids are dressed *by the parents* and he decided he likes pink over blue. Big deal, dress him in pinks and ribbons, but don't call him transgender. He's a boy with a different fashion taste and preference of dolls over guns, but that doesn't make him female - yet. Let him decide it when he is able to form an informed opinion. His parents get an F, for both failing to differentiate between x dressing and gender, and also for being sue happy and greedy."

If her passport and license state female then I definitely think she should be able to use the girls room.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's a little ridiculous for a 6 year old to be transgendered? Isn't this more the parents's doing than the kids'? I mean, I TOTALLY understand the boy wanting/liking things that are more girl oriented, but this seems like a way over the top move at only 6 years old.

This was my first thought as well. I'm VERY surprised that a child as young as 6 can be definitively identified as "transgendered". Now it may be something that very well turns out to be true as the child grows older, but how are they coming to this conclusion right now-- based on the kid's love for girl clothing?

My 4 year old wears princess dress up gowns every day and tells everyone stories about her castle and her prince and her horse and carriage. Does that make her a princess?
