Am I the only one who thinks that it's a little ridiculous for a 6 year old to be transgendered? Isn't this more the parents's doing than the kids'? I mean, I TOTALLY understand the boy wanting/liking things that are more girl oriented, but this seems like a way over the top move at only 6 years old.

You are not the only one who feels this way. There is no way a 6 year old can possibly comprehend what it truly means to change genders.

With that said, at that age I don't see the big deal of about boys and girls using the same bathroom when there are only private stalls available regardless of the transgender issue. I wouldn't prefer it, but it's not something I would counter sue over.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all.

I saw an episode of Our America w/ Lisa Ling on the OWN network last year about a transgendered child. It was very interesting.

Our America

ETA: Here's an interview with the mother of a young child who is transgender.

I truly honestly believe that these kids know, even at a young age.

I feel for the kid, and his parents - I tryly do - However, I have issues with accomodating ONE child's feelings, at the expense of EVERYONE elses .....

He's not female, regardless of how he feels about himself, he is physically not a female - so he doesn't belong in the girls bathroom, locker room etc - I think iit's completely inappropriate, and I think it's unfair to the girls to have to be made to feel uncomfortable by the presence of a boy in the bathroom/locker room.

The girls bathroom has stalls. No one sees anything. I say let the kid feel comfortable.

If you have ever met a transgendered child you would see that it is truly the individual not the parents. Who would ever wish their child to be transgendered?? transgendered is not about about liking one genders activities over the other. It is how they identify themselves. They think they are the other gender. There is a big difference between a transgendered 6year old and a homosexual 6 year old.

ITA.

Love the interview you quoted.

Great film "Ma vie en rose" explores the topic.

Thank God I live in NYC (well, kind of)!

Yes. Times a million.
I did a lot of research on this in college. It's way deeper than it would seem. Literally feel like they were born into wrong body and express this very early on. They feel as if who they truly are does not fit the package that they are in. It's hard to imagine a young child having the capability to feel such a way, but they do. They also are unhappy until something is done about it and others accept how they feel.

It's a very sad and difficult issue but there can be a happy ending if the child is able to live as how she/he wishes.

Transgendered Child and School

As a 6 year old I have no issue for the child using the girls bathroom but I would if they were older. Once puberty starts there is no way I would want a boy in a closed bathroom/locker room with all girls and no adult supervision. I also disagree with this child's parents. I would be requesting that the child to use the nurses office or a gender neutral area to go to the bathroom and change. Kids are brutal now a days and I would be taking every step necessary to make sure that the child was protected. Also, all it takes is one time that one little girl says that the child showed his privates in the bathroom (whether its true or not) and all hell will break loose.

We had this issue at our middle school and the locker room. Parents were very uncomfortable with their daughters changing with a boy. He was a boy for the past 6 years in the school but came back that year as a girl so the fellow peers were really confused at the age of 12 what was going on. The school decided it was best for the child to change in the nurses office as she still had the parts of a boy.

This is a totally different situation though. In this case, I would say yes, use the nurse's office

But what makes it a different situation? I'm not trying to be snarky - I'm really curious about other's opinions on this b/c I keep going over it in my head and the more I think about the whole situation the more upset I get for EVERYONE .......is there a 'best' way to handle this ???

Because in the second story this kid went to school for 6 years as a boy, then came back after summer as a girl. That is the difference. This 1st grader has always been known as a girl

I feel very uncomfortable labeling a first grader as transgendered. I think that is way too young. Just like I wouldn't label a first grader gay. Honestly, this child has to follow the rules and use the bathroom for the gender that matches his genitalia. Sorry, kids can't always get what they want.

But don't you think the same could be said when kids find out that the 'girl' they knew for x amount of years is really a boy? I personally feel that that situation would be even worse for both the child, and her friends/classmates ...

Again, not trying to be snarky, this is what I'm having such a hard time with.

At SOME point it's going to come out that this girl has a penis

Is there ever a time in the locker room when you are changing that your genitals are actually exposed? Changing from pants to shorts for gym doesn't require taking off your under wear and if it does then the locker room has stalls for using the bathroom. I've never gotten nude in all my school years.

At 6 I don't think it's a big deal although it will be a bigger deal as she gets older.
I do question if this child is truly transgender. I hope they are not going to give him a sex change. I really hope they are not just crazy people who have been raising him to be a girl because they wanted a girl. I haven't read the article yet so forgive me if psychologists have confirmed him being transgender.

I think that if there are no private areas in the locker room the easiest solution would be to make an area in the girls locker room for privacy if genitals will be exposed. Everyone should be entitled to their privacy.

ok, I just went and read the article and saw the video. What did she say? she noticed she was acting different at 18 months??? Give me a break on that one.

I'm starting to feel like these people in their effort to be super enlightened parents may have jumped on the bandwagon a little to quickly. Just the fact that all of their young children have their hair dyed different colors... I feel it shows they are giving them a little too much freedom a little too early. I think 6 is a little young to be dying their hair bright pink. Something is just not sitting right with this one. It's almost like in their effort to embrace and support her as being different they are blowing this out of proportion for her age.

I do believe being transgender or gay does manifest itself at an early age but to change your child's gender based on an 18 month olds behavior and embracing it in such early years of life seems a drastic.

Children are not even aware of gender at such young age. I am not even talking about sex. But just the difference between the colors and styles of clothes, toys and accessories? When my girls were 18 months they wouldn't have know the difference between a dress or a pair of cargo pants or a burlap sack. My girls have all different toys both for boys and for girls. There is just no way that they would have been able to express any gender choice at such an early age. And to say she was "depressed" at that age over it? I just don't see that being possible.

I am a staunch supporter of equal rights, gay marriage and fighting discrimination at all costs but in this case at this age to not allow the child to make this decision for herself seems premature.

If he's nervous, aftraid etc (probably with good reason, unfortunately) of using the boys' facilities, I think the school should help him and allow use of the nurse's bathroom, faculty bathroom or something like that But I don't think that he should be granted access to the girls' facilities simply because he feels he is a girl (Simply is a bad word, nothing about this is simple)

The story I saw, the girl (who was born a boy) had zero interest in girls. She was interested in boys. So I don't think there is a "threat" for the girls in the bathroom.

For the safety of the child...I would let her use girls bathroom.

This is not my child, but someone's child who has rights to a safe school day.

If you have not lived in these peoples shoes, you actually have NO idea what you are talking about. Not one clue.

And I mean no disrespect at all. None.

The problem is "adults" thinking "there is no way a child is Gay or transgendered at that age".

Anyone who thinks that is 100% and absolutely completely wrong.

Firstly, every one, every SINGLE one of my gay (male) friends has said they knew they were gay since they could possibly remember. Every single one. I asked what that meant. They all said that when they were very little 3-6 years old, they KNEW they were different. They didn’t know WHAT that "different" was, but they all knew.

Every.Single.One.

My niece is now 17. We knew, from the time she was 5 she was gay and (possibly) transgendered. The whole family knew. Without one shadow of a doubt.

It wasn’t her wanting something boy oriented.

It wasn’t her wanting to try cloths boy oriented.

She has always identified herself as "male".

At 17 she has many problems. She is a good kid...but is lonely. She has not come out and told us she is gay yet. We would be shocked if she wasn’t transgendered. But she never talks about it. Frankly its her business, but she is DAMN lucky to be in our family. None of us care what she is and will support anything she decides to be, gay, transgendered.

But I want to be clear that when stories like this come out, don’t look to the parents as indulging their kids, or a phase. Most of these kids are NOT going through a phase. They have REAL issues and have a whole lifetime of suck until they can figure out who they are, and are ALLOWED to be that person.

So no. This is NOT over the top. Thank heaven the parents realized they are dealing with this, rather than ignore it and have their "son" be miserable. The parents are hero's as far as I'm concerned.

completely agree- my cousin is gay and its been well known in the family since we were all young.

what are parents supposed to do? force them to be a gender or sexual orientation that they aren't? That seems like it would be very damaging- moreso than letting the kid figure it out

Re: Transgendered Child and School

I am a preschool psychologist. Gender identity emerges VERY early in children. Many three-year-olds already have a strong sense of male vs. female. I have encountered a few boys who I would be stunned if they do not eventually identify as gay or transgender. It goes beyond wanting to play with "girl stuff." These children truly identify with female roles. We had a child who was in foster care whose foster mother would not accept or indulge his preference for princesses, jewelry, dress-up etc. We saw a clear change in his behavior at school and his expressions once his foster home was changed to one where his gender identity was accepted.

As for the original post, I think this child should be able to use the girls' room. No one is seeing her penis. She is in a bathroom stall. If she is identified as a girl in school, it is even more confusing to the other children if she is using the boys' bathroom.

My best friend is gay & he told me the same thing, he distinctly remembers thinking around kindergarten he knew he favored the same sex & loved playing with the girls & their toys vs the boys. He just didn't know what to call it at that age, looking back as an adult he kinda had an Ah Ha moment.

They can't FORCE him/her to be a gender. You are BORN as a specific gender- you don't CHOOSE it.

If you allow this kid to use the girls room- then any other boy who wants to use the girls room for another "valid" reason should be allowed to. What if your (general "your" not you specifically) son was being teased and beaten up in the boys room by bigger boys and he wanted to use the girls' room to be safer? Would that be allowed?

I'd like to know what these parents saw at 18 months old that led them to believe he was transgender...

Re: Transgendered Child and School

When I asked one of my friends who is gay how & when she knew... she said she was "born waving the rainbow flag". Thank goodness her family was supportive.

Another one of my gay friends was scared how telling me was going to effect out relationship. Her parents didn't know until she was with her partner for years.

It's a rough world out there.

Who knows with this particular child, but she isn't going to hurt/mentally damage your daughters in the locker room or bathroom.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's a little ridiculous for a 6 year old to be transgendered? Isn't this more the parents’ doing than the kids'? I mean, I TOTALLY understand the boy wanting/liking things that are more girl oriented, but this seems like a way over the top move at only 6 years old.

But with the exception of a penis, she is a girl, for all intents and purposes. Mentally, emotionally.... she's a girl. I see a big difference between her using the girls room and a boy wanting to use the girls room just to avoid being bullied.
