Tipping at closing

Our lawyer told DH that it is customary to tip the person who handles the closing (does the paperwork , etc). When DH asked how much he said $100 was the usual.

Is it really customary to tip this person? If so, what range?

Thanks!!

Re: Tipping at closing

i read that a lot of people tip also. i had money with us, but no one told us that we should. so in the end we didn't. when i read the contract over with the breakdown of all the fees, etc. there actually was a fee and tip for that person already. they get a lot of money for doing relatively simple in the hour that you are there.

in the end it's up to you!

We only tipped the title company representative. Our lawyer was the one who advised us to do so and recommended we give him $200 Chat Icon

We just refinanced and my DH and I disagreed on this. The processor made $250 for the hour of signing. He said not to give her anything. I gave a $20 bill because I felt bad. Now looking back I think tipping for that is ridiculous!!!

Re: Tipping at closing

We did not tip anyone. They are doing their job. Their fees are set on the HUD form so you can see exactly what they are already getting. I think tipping has gotten totally out of hand.

Re: Tipping at closing

Thank you! I'll let DH know. We were going back and forth trying to figure out what to do and I suggested I post the question to LIF. Of course I got responses- so thank you for helping out!

It is customary to tip the title closer. It can be in the form of cash or check. We tipped $100.

They are the ones who are actually responsible for making sure all documents are signed properly, that they are recorded in the County Clerk's office, etc. At the closing, they actually worked the hardest.

We tipped although I don't remember how much. My lawyer told me to write out a whole bunch of checks and the "tip" was one of them. Didn't argue. Just did it ;)

We didn't tip anyone. Never heard of it and never would think about it.

We want to give our lawyer a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. He was really great.

Re: Tipping at closing

we tipped the guy from the title company. it was listed as one of the checks we needed from the lawyer the day before closing.

he literally worked his butt off during our closing crunching numbers b/c of issues with the previous owners not paying their taxes correctly. and when he was my maiden name on the check we realized he went to HS with my parents.

2 of my friends said they didn't tip and then when they went back to look at their cancelled checks from that day they realized they did tip the title closer without even realizing they were doing it b/c the lawyer listed it as a check they needed for closing.

Re: Tipping at closing

We are closing tomorrow and don't plan on tipping anyone. No one has said anything about tipping, so it isn't even on our radar.

everyone who said they didn't tip/aren't tipping.....check the list of checks you need that you got from the lawyer. if there is one made out to the title person thats his/her tip! TWO of my friends swore they didn't tip then realized they did without even noticing.
they were annoyed that their lawyer didn't tell them that one of he checks they were writing is for a tip!! (they used the same lawyer)

Same here. The title closer happened to be our lawyer's son, too.

Re: Tipping at closing

I think the confusion comes from the use of the word "tip"

it's not a tip- it's the title closers fee

It gets paid usually in the form of a check your attorney tells you to write

the title person is the only person who gets a "tip"
