Tipping at closing
I seem to recall that you are suppose to tip some people at the closing (i.e. person from title company), but I have no idea who and how much. Can someone help me? You can PM me if you want.

Re: Tipping at closing
Our broker told us usually $75 - $100 to the title person.

Re: Tipping at closing
A lot of times a lawyer will mostly tell their clients to just make out checks for a specific amount to the title, etc. and won't tell them that it's a tip...

That's what happened in our case, we wrote out a $100 check for the person, not realizing it was a "tip" until I read a post here!

I think my post came out a little wrong, our lawyer told us the check was for the person who was the title closer, it was on the list of closing costs he gave us too so I didn't think it was a tip, I thought it was a closing cost (since that was the way it was presented).

Re: Tipping at closing
Yes that is correct. Most peopel call it a tip but really it is an attendence fee to the title closer. The title closer does not work for the title company they are independent contractors and the way they make money is by receiving "tips/attendence fee". It is customary to give them an attendence fee. At to how much to give it is up to you it can be anywhere from $75 to $150--it really depends on what you want to give. The title closer assures that your documents are properly recorded and sent the title company in a timely fashion. It is likely that you didn't even know you wrote the check to them, some closer include it on the title bill.
I am a real estate attorney and it is customary in the industry to give a "tip"--even though I don't like calling it that because a tip assumes they are getting paid something and they aren't. The only time I haven't seen an attorney inform their client that they had to give the closer a check is an attorney who doesn't practice real estate.

Exactly. Our title person was rude and is an employee of my attorney who happend to own the title company. Although not illigeal, they chose not to tell us that they were co-workers. My mortgage guy actually told us!!

We gave the title person $100. At that point, what is another $100?

Well said! It's NOT a tip...it's a fee. Those that "think" they didn't...it was worked in somewhere...they're not going to be there for free.
With that said - we paid ours $150.

I never heard of such a thing!!?? Tipping people at a closing is ridiculous. In fact, our agent gave US a $300 cash gift and champagne.
