Thoughts on this story? TSA searches and questions 10 year old over an hour.
This was on my local news today and I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are?

I personally think the TSA way overstepped boundaries in this case. We just traveled with my 10 year old and they didn't even make him take his shoes off! I can't imagine having him patted down and then questioned for over an hour over a juice box! Why didn't they just have the girl drink it or throw it out?

I would be livid if that was my daughter. It went on for a good 2 minutes.

nevermind. 2 minutes isnt that long. they are taking precautions.
i carry nyquil and get stopped every time. they just ask me to drink some.

I can understand the 2 minute pat down, although it would make me uncomfortable if that was my child. But why the extra 1 hour of screening procedures after that?

i'd hate to say it, but could it be the long skirt?
maybe they received info on certain things to look for. we really dont know and probably wont know. so much goes on behind the scenes.
if that is what it takes to keep everyone safe, so be it.
id rather they be overly cautious.

While I do feel very sorry for this girl, I feel this might just have to be the new norm.
A true terrorist would think nothing about using their 10 year old to get a bomb or weapons onto the plane .

That's what I don't understand.
Having liquid in a larger than allowable quantity in your bag show up on the x-ray is cause for concern. So, they search your bag & see what it is: juice. They do what ever they need to do to verify that, and possibly confiscate it.
How does having juice in your bag, make you then a suspicious person who needs further security?
I once saw a man with a full water bottle in his bag & then just took it. He was very confused (despite the many signs) that he couldn't have that, although he knew he had to take his hat off & put it on the belt.
Last time I flew out of JFK, I was TSA pre approved, so I expected to be told that I didn't have to take my shoes off or take my liquids out, but they just told me about the shoes. I ended up going on the regular line to stay with my husband, and noticed that no one took their liquids out and there were no signs instructing you to do so, so that's why they didn't tell me not, to--because no one had to.
I really don't understand the inconsistancy.

no, they shouldn't give up, but they should concentrate on the areas of security that yield results.

This looks like the same 2 minute patdown I get everytime I travel pregnant. It is invasive, but they do tell you everything they are about to do (I've had TSA agents that do it wrong too though, but I let it slide) and if you are uncomfortable with that, they give you the option to have the patdown in a secluded area. I think the father could have requested that.
I'm curious why the extra hour of screening procedures though.

That is ridiculous, then everyone with a long skirt could be a potential terrorist and subject to a pat down.
I would be fuming if they screened my 10 year old for an HOUR after this pat down. Sounds like someone was on a power trip that day.

I have no problem with the patting down but there is no reason to question a 10 year old for an hour. Good luck if they tried that to my high anxiety, ADHD, autistic daughter lol. They would never question anyone again.

Disturbing, I would be really pissed. The TSA is just a random mish mosh of people. I think stronger recruitment requirements and stricter training is necessary. You never know what you are going to get when you show up at the airport.
I've chosen pat down over the machines and it literally took 30 seconds, I was never made to feel uncomfortable.

I just saw this on the news and the reason for the extra hour was because the juice box falsely tested positive for explosives. They were just being cautious....which I think is safer even if it's an inconvenience.

While I feel sorry for the little girl, I also understand that we live in a scary world and I would rather them be overly pre-cautious then just let someone board a plane that could potentially be dangerous. I really feel like they're damned if they do and they're damned if they don't.

I just went through a pat down. I pregnant so couldn't go through the scanner. What they did was exactly the same to me. The thing he didn't video was the initial part where the tsa tells you exactly what and how they will do it plus where they will touch. I was felt up everywhere. She pushed my boobs and asked about the underwire, my waist line my legs just about my crotch. She did ask if I wanted to do it in private. I didn't see anything wrong with went on. It took a good 2 mins for me too.

I don't think children should be getting a pat down and quite honestly, I'd be pretty annoyed if this happened to my 7 yr old DD. When we flew last year all my kids had to do was walk through the metal detector, shoes on. I think it's a little ridiculous what happened to this 10 yr old and that father has every right to be upset.

Makes sense that there was more to the story to warrant the additional screening time. I accidentally had my 3 yr olds cup filled with juice in my backpack walking through security and was stopped. All they did was test it, came up negative, and sent me on my way without dumping my kids juice.

You know it was but with the craziness I was glad. I didn't want it but I'd rather them not slip a potential danger through. Unfortunately peopl ruined it for us.

The questioning was weird but if it did test for explosives (even falsely) then they did their job
