Re: The Topic to End all Spinoffs

I am involved in animal rescue in areas where rats outnumber residents. 99% of the bodega owners have a cat. As a result, rats are not present in the establishment. Many NYC rescue organizations are in favor of allowing cats in these establishments. Many rescue organizations bring bodega/deli cats to the ASPCA mobile spay neuter clinic and then return to owner. Rescue organizations welcome a law to allow these cats to remain in these establishments. Business owners are willing to pay a yearly license fee. The cats are vaccinated against rabies and spayed or neutered. This will also decrease the high death rate in Animal Care and Control of NYC as many business would adopt a cat. Many others who have cats in their establishment would not fear a violation by NYC Department of Health and be forced to surrender the cat which more than likely would be put to death at Animal Care and Control. NYC Department of Health is an incompetent organization way behind the times. The mandatory spay neuter law in NYCHA (public housing) is not enforced. Rabie and dog license law is not enforced city wide. As a result approximately $50 million in revenue and fines is lost annually and tens of thousands are put to death at Animal Care and Control. If you patronize a food establishment in NYC you can go to the NYC Department of Health and check for violations. You may find many state rodent droppings or sightings. It is safe to say these establishments do not have a cat on the premises. So what does this mean? It means that the food you have purchased, may have had a mouse or rat dropping, or a mouse/rat touched food when the establishment was closed. That would not happen if a cat were on the premises. It happens in the best of places, areas and expensive restaurants. If you work in Lower Manhattan Financial District search the establishment you patronize, you might be quite surprised at the results.

Though I believe the scenario you present is a VERY real problem I don't believe having cats in the establishment is the answer. Not to mention, we're not talking about business owners keeping THEIR cat in a store. We're talking about the "Paris Hilton wannabes" who feel the need to bring their little dogs into supermarkets or stores of the like.

These people are serving NO purpose whatsoever. They're just carrying their dogs around as an accessory.

But back to your point...

I feel these business owners have an obligation to keep clean establishments and to do whatever is necessary to keep rodents away from food. If there are droppings on food or food packages then there's a SERIOUS problem and maybe besides handing out fines, the city needs to do something about the rodent problem infesting it.

I understand rats have been around for centuries, but come on, it's 2008 can't we find a solution to the city's rodent problem other than keeping a cat in a store? It seems a little primative to me.

everyone breaks the law.

if this is the worst "crime" i commit, so be it.

i dont take my dogs into supermarkets..... i dont think that is the place for them.

but i DO take them into a bodega when i'm out and need to pop in for a bottle of water or whathaveyou.
most bodega owners/workers love it. its never a problem--- t least in Williasmburg. its very laid back here. manhattan too, but depends. some places have a NO PETS sign. which i always respect.

besides, almost EVERY bodega i have encountered owns a cat.

NYC government is the problem. The majority of NCYCHA complexes are filthy. The problem is not the business owners, it is the residents. The business owners are faced with many problems, one is high crime and residents who do not keep their community clean. Having a cat in a food establishment is the only effective way to keep out mice and rats. Nothing else works. The only animal that should be in a food establishment is a cat, owned by the business owner. All others should be off limits.

There are many businesses on LI that have cats but it is kept secret.

Re: The Topic to End all Spinoffs

this is a neverending arguement.

no good can come from a thread such as this one.
(not knocking the OP, just saying)

i missed all the drama of last night?

point is this:
if you dont think dogs/cats should be in stores do not bring yours.

if you KNOW a store doesnt allow animals, dont bring them in. and if you do, prepare to be kicked out, get dirty looks, etc.

if a store sells food, but the owners/employees WELCOME animals, please realize they allow it, yet it is still against the law.

in the end, NO ONE here is a police, so no one should be acting like one. whats th point of bytching about it on a thread? there is NONE. if you hate it and encounter it is a food store, by all means, take it up with the animals owner, or the stores manager. complain. write letters. make calls. etc.
but sitting behind your computer pointing fingers and being judgemental is POINTLESS.

just my two cents. Chat Icon

You're missing the point. You have NO RIGHT to do this, by LAW. WHY? Why do you feel like you DO when you DON'T?

THAT'S what BAFFLES me.

I most absolutely agree, so if people started rallying for reform instead of putting a band aid over the problem maybe we could get somewhere. BUT as long as people feel it's OK to BREAK THE LAW then nothing will be done about it.

You're absolutely right because the people who bring their dogs into public places PARTICULARLY food establishement REFUSE to believe they are BREAKING THE LAW; and if they DO realize they ARE breaking the law, they DON'T CARE.

No, actually, it was DAYS ago.

Absolutely! I agree 1000000% Just would like to add, what the store wants DOESN'T matter. It's a STATE LAW - No pets allowed.

Posted by Jesaroo

So b/c in your opinion, it's not a big deal, the fact that it's a law doesn't matter. Sorry, I don't get that.

Did you actually READ the OP? It was NOT posted to BlTCH about pet owners bringing their dogs into food stores, it was to POST that it IS in fact AGAINST THE LAW to do. No arguement here - just FACT. Ignore it if you want, but don't say that people here aren't doing anything but sitting on their azzes typing about the problem and doing nothing about it. People do something about it all the time. Annoying pet owners who feel the need to bring their dogs into a supermarket DO get kicked out.

This is just ONE of the MANY topics to come up on these boards. To sit here and say why discuss it? Well, again, I just don't get YOUR point. This is a MESSAGE BOARD, we TALK about things here. Isn't THAT the POINT?

there are MILLIONS of laws. i'm sure YOU don't abide by EVERY one either.

why dont you just get off of your soapbox already?

i rarely bring my animals with me anymore, and i ONLY bring them to stores that WELCOME it.

if a store WELCOMES it i dont care what the law says. i have bar owners, bodega owners TELL ME to bring the dogs next time. JuST LAST NIGHT actually! so... if they dont care, i dont care.
not for nothing, its been said over and over again... but LI and teh city are very different when it comes to this subject. i have lived in both. i wouldnt dream of bringing my animal with me to a deli on LI, but in brooklyn, well, i wouldnt think twice. and what do you think im doing? hanging around shopping??? no way. i pick my dog up, run inside, grab the water or whatever it is i need (usually just a quick drink) and i get out of tehre. i dont hang out. not that i have to explain myself to you.

and btw, i resent your paris hilton comment. coulnt be further form the truth. i cant stand her and the way she is with her animals. what she does and how she carries herself has NOTHING to do with me. there is NO comparison.

what i dont get is how YOU think YOU can be judgemental and sit there on your soapbox pointing fingers. Are YOU the person entrusted to carryout this law? Ummmmmm im guessing youre NOT.
so, seriously, worry about yourself.

Re: The Topic to End all Spinoffs

ok, so we get it..... its the law.

like i said, i rarely bring my animals with me anymore.... BUT if i am out and i need a drink I do go into a pet friendly bodega to get one.
that MAY be against the law, BUT as long as the store allows/welcomes it, i will continue.
and to be honest, store around me always will allow it. its different. we cant just pop in and leave our dog in the car. we cant leave our dog in the yard. when you live in the city, you walk your dogs constantly... if i get parched, im goign to buy myself a drink.

i realize this may be technically illegal, BUT as i have said, if the store allows it and welcomes it, then i will continue to do so.

Why don't you bring a reusable bottle of water with you when you walk the dogs? That way you won't have to pop in for a drink. And you will be helping the environment by not buying bottles of water.
