Re: the discussion formerly known as "NVM"
Posted by SweetestOfPeas if that is a correct assessment, how can you take offense at the no common sense thing?
close- you have pretty much got me pegged. Here's the deal. I speak my mind. I do not walk around making racial jokes or trash talking genders or political groups. I do not make brash generalizations about certain ethnicities or religious groups. I have a sense of humor that not everyone will get. I know that. And yes, maybe part of my sense of humor involves messing with people's heads.
BUT- I do not tip toe around the extreme plague of PC obsessed mentality that has become this country. Because that is too hard for me. For anyone. If I call my husband "cracker" in a private conversation, and someone overhears, whose husband was killed in a ritz factory, is that really my problem? That is what makes me me. That I do not appreciate people who constantly need to blame others for everything. If I have a particular sensitivity to something, like chicken crossing the road jokes, because my cat named chicky was killed by a car, then I don't hold the joke teller responsible for my personal feelings. I also don't run and sue for everything that would befel my family. Becaus eI don't have a need to blame. So thatbeing said, I can not spend all of my time, and censor my own thoughts, because someone around me may be of the caliber of person that does need ot be angry. Because that person will never be my friend. Because that person will never be satisfied.
I never said I took offense to you saying I have no common sense. I simply said it wasn't nice, because it was a personal insult. And honestly, I think that means I DO have thick skin. I do however think it makes you appear closed minded, which is a shame, because that makes me doubt all of the time I wasted debating.

Posted by SweetestOfPeas IMO, a person who starts a thread like this, or supports things that are IN FACT offensive to others, has no common sense.
That's such a broad generalization - so many things are offensive to some, while not offensive to others. Who decides who has common sense? i think everyone is missing that "IMO" part
why can't I have that opinion?
Thatt's ironic, don't you think?
Your generalization is offensive but b/c it's YOUR opinion, it's OK to have?
Perhaps you unwittingly fall into your own broad generalization... perhaps. but again IMO, if someone touts that they don't really care if they offend someone, I am entitled to think less of them. which is why I said what I did.

maybe I am a little closed minded. but at the same time, I know what is appropriate to post on here (a family friendly website), and what is not.

Re: the discussion formerly known as "NVM"
Posted by SweetestOfPeas what I said was "if I thought something was hysterical - to me. before sharing it with others, I would stop and think "is this appropriate?"
That's fine but I think the OP did think it was appropriate. The whole point of this thread is that different people have different ideas of what is appropriate.
IMO, a person who starts a thread like this, or supports things that are IN FACT offensive to others, has no common sense.
I understand that this is your opinion. But the only FACT here is that it's YOUR OPINION. Opinions are NOT facts. So saying that they lack common sense is not a fair judgement to make. Not to mention I don't quite see how they correlate?
in addition, if someone is touting how they don't really care if they offend someone b/c that's how they roll, they should have thicker skin.
I'm pretty sure preguntas wasn't insulted but viewed the "common sense" comment as being mean in a general sense. My point - she didn't take it personally. (I think. I really shouldn't speak for her.) My opinion, on the "no common sense" comment, it was mean and could be taken offensively. Was I offended? No. But others could be.
I would think as someone who said she considers her audiance you wouldn't say something like that. But I do understand that this is only your opinion. That's cool.

Re: the discussion formerly known as "NVM"
Ugh, I am talking to a brick wall.
I am not going to waste anothe rminute explaining myself to you. At least I have the decency to partake in a debate while "listening" to other people's points without judging them. You didn't care about offending me, or the dozens of people on here who share my opinions, with your comment. So how, exactly are you better than me?
Please don't even bother to respond, it's rhetorical. It just supports my theory that people that need to argue everyone's point, and take offense to every little thing, are just trying to prove to themselves that they are better than someone.
I have posted dozens of times on this topic without getting defensive. Thanks for ruining a potentially intelligent moment. I am sur eyou will need ot have a last word, so I leave you with

last but certainly not least, IMO, a swastika is TOTALLY a symbol of hate!
I agree I agree too! I am Jewish and a swastika really upsets me!
Seriously - someone saying the swastika is not a symbol of hate offends me and makes my blood boil!!! I don't give a flip what it signified 200 years ago - for the past 75+ years it has signified NOTHING but hate, fear, terror and massacre. Just two weeks ago, we were at my aunt's for holiday dinner. Her friend's dad had his concentration camp number tattooed on his arm - feel free to ask him what a swastika symbolizes for him. Or how about the one that was stamped on the cover of my grandfather's passport - the one he so desperately needed to escape Nazi Germany - too bad the rest of his family couldn't get out. Ahh, fond memories of the swastika, I tell you.

WHY ARE WE NOT FACING THE FACT THAT JUST ABOUT ANY AMERICAN WHO SEES A SWASTIKA THINKS OF THE NAZI'S BEFORE THINKING OF ANY OTHER MEANING? LET'S FACE THE FACTS ABOUT WHAT MADE THAT SYMBOL SO WELL KNOWN. THE DRAMA THIS WEEK IS ABSOLUTELY APPALLING.
I did.
Posted by Shelly
However, in America and Europe and original meaning has been grossly overshadowed by the symbol for the Nazi regime. And yes- that offends the heck out of me.
Yep, I read the whole thing!
so can you please explain what your post meant then. I don't get it.
To clarify, my post was not directed at you or your post at all. I was impressed by what you had to say! My post was directed toward peope who were expressing a much different view from yours. At the time, I felt that was the majority of the people here and I was very disappointed b/c I felt that some people were not acknowledging the most common interpretation of the swastika.

eta- Deb- a swastika is not a symbol of hate.
I am not attacking Jess. I like Jess as she has been very helpful to me in the past. Do I agree with everything she says? No but I certainly don't hate her. As for the swastika, as I learned watching Tom Hanks in the Davinci Code. The swastika was not always a symbol of hate but due to WWII the way that sign is generally interpreted as certaibnly changed. Just ask anyone from Europe who at the time was of Jewish decent.
Nazi Germany took the symbol and turned it backwards, making the swastika... I rmemeber going to Buddhist temples and seeing the swastika everywhere and was like, what the HELL? And then it was explained to me...

Why are people popping in here and trying to make this about going against Jess? That is not it at all! Look at the first few intelligent posts. It is about how a burning cross can be PERCEIVED to be offensive. That's it. Not a slam into Jess AT ALL! It's a healthy debate. It's not about dogs It's not about Jess It's about realizing how another person MAY find something offensive that you personally don't
Please don't come in and say drama don't do eye rolls don't post bunnies or boobs or anything else.
Let the discussion be a real discussion
