Thank you, Oprah!
The show made me bawl like a baby -- it even made DH a little choked up -- but it was so informative. I hope she reached a big audience.
Good for her for speaking out on this issue -- and extra salute to the rescue orgs on her show today

Yes... and the whole time, I kept thinking of Bella, a puppy mill rescue. My heart hurts knowing what she went through.

Luckily you saved her.
I didn't know Oprah's dog Sophie died? What happened? Does anyone know? That was so sad....that whole scene, the whole show. Broke my heart.

Re: Thank you, Oprah!
I cried during the whole show and called my DH at work sobbing telling him how terrible it was!!
I'm sooooo glad she did this show! There really needs to be more information out to the public on this. I really think most people just don't know what a big deal this really is.

I googled it. Sophie died at 13 only a few weeks ago (3/10) of kidney failure. Poor Oprah

I am sick over this show. I had to tape it so I just saw it. I was so ignorant. My next animal will be from a shelter. I am sure many other people who saw this will be doing the same. I cant stop thinking about those poor female mothers. This should be illegal. Whats wrong with this Country. I am ashamed.

Warning, I am being a bit graphic

Warning, I am going to be as graphic as the show was...but not half as much as actually seeing it. A man who rescues mill dogs had a billboard made up to catch Oprah's attention in teh Chicago area. It pictured a dog and said "OPRAH, please do a show on puppy mills. The dogs need you." So Oprah contacted him and the show was created.
Lisa Ling and this billboard man (Bill, founder of www.MLAR.org) went undercover to puppy mills. They had hidden cameras on.
Bill SAVES dogs who are going to be put to death in puppy mills. He begs the mill owners to give him the dogs, the sick and injured ones, etc. Otherwise the MILL owners kill the dogs by gas or shooting them with a gun.
He has saved thousands of dogs. The sights were horrendous. Dead dogs, dogs crammed in cages, fithly, sick, injured, going insane and bezerk from the mistreatment. They rescued 41 dogs that day. These dogs have NEVER set foot on the ground or grass, yet they LIVE ON ACRES of land. They have never had human affection or contact. NEVER.
Bill's organization tries to rehab the dogs, find homes when they heal. What broke my heart the most was when Oprah asked "how do you know they are "coming" around?" And he said "Their tails begin to wag..." and the audience gasped and groaned. I LOST IT, hysterical. The sadness these dogs face is unbearable for anyone with a heart.
Then they interviewed a wonderful lady of the Lange shelter in CA who rescues dogs who are going to be put to death. She runs soley on donations. She rescues dogs for a living...what a giving, and wonderful lady. They spent a lot of time following her in her typical day.
But what broke my heart so badly was when they went to a local animal contol office in CA I believe, where like 30 dogs and cats a day are brought in and have to be put down due to lack of space, no one to adopt them etc. The man who does this tries to treat the dogs with dignity, walking around choosing which dog will get the BIG LETTER E marked on his/her cage that day to be put down. They give the dogs lethal injections...they could be perfectly healthy or homeable, but since they have no space, they get killed. The dogs are put into plastic bags and dumped into a dumpster. ABout 30-40 dogs a day are sometimes killed....a forklift has to pick up the bags of DEAD dogs.
I lost it at this segment. I am sick over it, I have visions in my head of these dogs....they have to be dragged into the room to be killed most of them....
Then they had Oprah's vet on, showing how important it is to spay/neuter. Showed the procedure as being quick and painless and extremely important to prevent unwanted animals in the world.
They stressed the importance of NOT BUYING from a pet store EVER, that 99.99% of pet stores get their dogs from these very places. That the millers don't regard animals as anything other than a commodity, and the rescuer Bill said the millers are shocked when he tells them his dogs LIVE IN HIS HOUSE. They say "YOU LET A DOG WALK AROUND YOUR HOUSE WHERE YOUR FAMILY LIVES? "
The mill dogs are destined to a life of doom. Many of the moms have nipple/breast tumors from nursing constantly, they are crushing their pups in the cages, cages stacked high to the ceiling on top of one another. Some millers make dogs go on WHEELS like hamsters...just keeping the dog in motion and insane...
I could go on....please check it out for yourself.Link to show info

Do not be ashamed. The Millers are experts at keeping the truth out of the public's reach, and the stores are even worse.
It is illegal, just not regulated.

Re: Thank you, Oprah!
I'm in tears just reading what you wrote. Thank you for taking the time to type all of that out, I appreciate it. My DH always sees me crying over one thing or another, what I see on TV or in a magazine, and I tell him IHAVE to do something. He tells me I could never handle it, which is probably true. I cry at the vets office, you name it. How can this be stopped????

Re: Thank you, Oprah!
Did they do a good job of differentiating responsible breeders from puppy mill breeders? I was hoping they did a good job of this, since I know Oprah has some beautiful purebreds.

Basically, they just said this once or twice...and Oprah vowed to only go to a shelter or breed rescue from now on.
Reps from Humane Society, etc basically said ANY PET STORE will have dogs from mills, despite what they tell you or what they even believe.
Lisa Ling and Bill from MLAR.org traced back 2 puppies they saw in a puppy store to mills in PA. They saw the pups moms, in really bad shape.
So basically the concept was, NEVER buy from a pet store, go to a rescue, breed specific rescue, shelter or find a responsible breeder who take the puppy back, who you can see the conditions the dogs live in, etc, and never buy a dog/puppy over hte internet from a "breeder" b/c a responsible breeder won't sell dogs over the internet.
Nothng we haven't said here already but I think they did a nice job of driving home the point of NO PET STORES (which was the main point).

She made several points, and the mill rescue guy as well as the rep from the humane society stated that there are responsible breeders and that they interview the potential owners and do home visits,e tc. He also pointed out that they will always take a dog back if the owner cannot keep it to make sure the dogs do not end up in the shelters.
Oprah did, however, vow never to use a breeder again now that she has seen that shelter dogs are a great option.

I missed the first 1/2 hr, which was on the puppy mills...but I watched the rest and watching all those shelter dogs being put down made both DH and I cry....especially having two shelther dogs, it just broke our hearts. I hope Oprah's show yesterday blows this issue up and people start doing something about it!

I kind of feel bad for responsible breeders. They kind of made it sound like you should only get a shelter dog, and buying a pure breed is a last resort. I hope all those pets stores go out of business!! Anyone ever go out to Manorville to Sportsman kennel. They told me they breed all those dogs on site. They must have 25 different pure breed dogs puppy's. It's disgusting!!

A responsible breeder would not have that many puppies.. I wouldn't go there
