Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll
i think it is tacky to bring your own containers and just assume you're taking leftovers home.
i hosted thanksgiving and i knew there would be leftovers, so i went out and bought tin trays from the dollar store so i could distribute the leftovers to my guests instead of using my own tupperware.

Soooo tacky. Granted, if I were hosting, I'd definitely be sending people home with leftovers, but to assume like that!

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll
I don't think its tacky AT ALL. I hosted Thanksgiving this year and most of my Tupperwear is now gone. I WISH people would have brought their own. It would be tacky if you did that in a stranger's home. Immediate family nope.

Well, I guess it is better than them taking your tupperware home for leftovers. I don't really have an issue with it.

Ditto! I once made Thanksgiving dinner and bought a set of cheapie tupperwares so everyone can bring stuff home. It would be much better if they brought their own.

I don't really see a problem with that, but to call it ridiculous that there were no leftovers is very tacky.

Think it depends on what fam member did it... If I wasnt too fond of them, i'd consider it rude, tacky, etc... If it was someone im really close with, like my parents, i wouldnt think twice about it .... sounds hypocritical, but its the truth! I think I would prefer that people bring over their own tpperware bc I feel like when Ive given out mine, I've never got it back
I agree...

Based on the update, I think the person was a rude AND tacky SOB...and if he/she wanted leftovers so badly, maybe they should host dinner so they can hoard the leftovers

I think if the host/ess asks you to bring it, go for it. Otherwise, tacky.
And to complain about the lack of leftovers...that's a whole new level.

similar to my aunt who brings ziploc baggies in her purse to weddings to put the cookies/pastries in to take home.
i think its odd, but its even more ridiculous to email the host afterwards complaining of no leftovers.

In my family this would be fine. We make extra so everyone can have some and all the better if the host does not have to give away their containers

Since it's family -- I really don't understand why it's tacky.
How many times do leftovers just get wasted because no one wants to bother eating them for 3 or 4 days straight?
IMHO - we can be so damn wasteful with food, where others out there would wish to just have a 1/4 plate of what we toss in the garbage -- so if someone wants to bring stuff home and NOT waste it....why is that tacky?
My family would probably be happy if someone took leftovers -- heck my mom is shoving leftovers in my siblings faces at the end of the meal, so if someone has their own containers, I say GREAT.
i totally agree i am usually fighting to NOT take leftovers home let someone else have em!

In my opinion, the person who paid for the food, prepared & cooked the food & hosted the event gets the leftovers. If they offer leftovers, then go right ahead & take them. If they say "hey bring some tupperware to take home leftovers", great. But to assume you're taking leftovers & then to complain there wasn't any or enough - is tacky in my book - even if it's family.

Re: Tacky Or Not - Poll ***UPDATED WITH a TID BIT***
The grumbly email is a bit much and the whole idea of bringing the containers is kind of tacky but I wouldn't mind the container part. If I was close enough to someone to have them at my home for Thanksgiving, I wouldn't care if they brought them. It's kind of odd but better than them taking my containers home and never seeing them again. I'm not a leftovers fan, I will not be enjoying the same stuff for the next 2 days so please take it home is my feeling on it.

I see this differently - unless the Tupperware Bringer was trying to sneak the leftovers out. The Napper is another animal entirely. When they are out to dinner you better know they are leaving that table with every Sweet & Low packet, every last dinner roll & every bowl of Chinese noodles securely tucked into the oversized handbag (or separate tote).

Okay if my parents came over to ME hosting Thanksgiving then no... not tacky they are my parents and if they want leftovers, cool.
If my in laws came over and I was hosting Thanksgiving then no, not tacky... who doesn't want yummy leftovers.
If my parents were invited to my in laws or my in laws were invited to my parents and either or brought the tupperware then yes... tacky. IDK why but that's just my opinion

No one said it was going in the garbage
I meant just that how many times do we have tons of leftovers and have just a day or 2 there is STILL some left and none of it gets used and thrown out -- because no one take anything home.
So I don't see the big deal of someone bringing a tupperware container to Thanksgiving since to me I would think "Awesome! Less leftovers for me to bother with in my fridge, and less likely they will be winding up in the trash in 2 days! Take as much as you want!"
The fact that it's being seen as tacky just seems weird to me.
The updated info about the email is definitely ballsy -- but the initial idea of being prepared for leftovers does not make me bat an eye at all.

I think that if the host mentions to bring tupperware for leftovers...that is fine.. but just taking it upon yourself to assume is tacky IMO.
