Sweatpants for school?

My husband and I are having a bit of a disagreement on this subject so I'm curious as to others' opinions. We had different school experiences, which he thinks are affecting our opinions. My question is: are sweatpants appropriate for kids to wear in elementary school or are they too casual?

ETA: I had no idea there was such variation in the word sweatpants lol. I'm referring to actually sweatpants material sweatpants- thick, solid color. My kids wear straight leg ones, no elastic at the bottom. I never liked elastic ankled ones as a kid and it stuck with me I guess!

Re: Sweatpants for school?

I used to dress my older son super cute- jeans, band tee shirts, converse, plaid shorts, polos, etc... Sweats were worn occasionally to school. Well my older DS is 9 and its all about sports gear for school- sweats, Adidas pants, shorts with under armour underneath, jerseys, team shirts, basketball sneakers, etc... I don't love it, but it's his style. He knows if we go to a party of a family function he has to suck it up and wear pants or jeans and nicer shirts/sweaters. My little guy is 5 and I still have some control. He wears a mix of everything.

Perfectly fine...sweatpants today are so cute, with patterns, etc...they're only sloppy if the rest of the outfit looks sloppy but I've dressed DS in adorable sweatpant outfits and would have no problem sending him to school like that.

Sweatpants for school?

Are they the elastic bottom, generic-type sweats, or Adidas or sporty sweats?

Yes, I don't think you need to be "dressed up" for school unless you have a school uniform that is required.
Plus DD has gym 3 days a week and she has to wear sneakers and sweat pants or leggings on those 3 days

My son (first grade) wears elastic band pants almost every day. Most are sweatpants and some a khaki, and we're all perfectly fine with it. Until he comes to us to say he's being made fun of, I'm sure it'll continue.

Re: Sweatpants for school?

Totally fine. Plus, I usually put DS is sweats on gym days. It's not like they are ripped, dirty and gross. There's really nice sweats out there for all kids. DS wears the Adidas sweats.

As long as they look nice, clean and there are no rips or anything inappropriate it's perfectly fine.
I still like my boys to look nice for school. Some days they're dressier than others.

I don't prefer it. I only usually let him when it's a really cold day.

He wears these cargos from Children's Place in like every color as a compromise.

Re: Sweatpants for school?

I am an 'appropriate attire' enforcer -
I'd much prefer to be over dressed than under dressed - I come from a family of very appearance consciouis people - very particular about how we present ourselves to the world type of thing -

My boys are going to school. To learn, and play and grow - It's not a fashion show, it's not a formal event, it's not even a family dinner at a restaraunt - it's every day at school.

They were comfortable clothes. T's, long sleeve T's and hoodies, long sleeves T's under short sleeves, jerseys, and usually wind pants. They are not big fans of jeans and cargos, so they are usually wearing windpants. My older son is always hot, so fleece doesn't work for him, my little one (4) is always freezing, so he wears a lot of fleece and pullover hoodies.

They always look neat and put together - but they're not 'dressed up'

When there's an event, all bets are off and you freaking wear what I tell you to wear or there's WW3 in my house. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree and I was going to also say my friend has kids in elementary school and she has to send them in sweats on school days.

Agreed. My older 2 used to wear jeans or khakis everyday. Now they were under armour pants/shorts everyday. Unfortunately, my 2 younger boys now like to wear the same thing! They still look cute, but I like the jeans better!

Sweatpants for school?

My 3 nephews all wear sweats or.shorts the minute it gets above 45. Drives my sil crazy but they are happy and comfortable. My other nephew only wears cargos and jeans, again his preference. As my SIL says clothes are not something to battle over.

My husband feels they are too casual for school. He thinks it's important for kids to know that they should dress nicely for school and sweatpants are not nice enough. My thought is that, as long as they don't look sloppy, their comfort is more important for learning.

Re: Sweatpants for school?

To be honest sweats or jogger pants are all the trend for kids, my 18yr old stepson lives in them. My 11yrs old niece loves to wear yoga pants and cute sweats to go out.

My son wears uniform for school but I've sent him in cute sweats for dress up day. I probably wouldn't send him in sweats every day but I don't think it's a big deal to wear them to school. Let the kid live I say!

Re: Sweatpants for school?

I'm not a fan of sweatpants. My girls don't have any sweatpants they wear jeans or leggings. However I see nothing wrong with wearing sweatpants to school. All that matters is that it cleans and fits.

Re: Sweatpants for school?

My son lives in them... Have them in heavy weight and lightweight.. I have straight leg and elastic bottom. You can pair them with all types of shirts... He wears them 4 out of 5 days to school (1st grade)

Re: Sweatpants for school?

Are you meaning real sweatpants or like athletic pants? My DS wears athletic pants, but not sweatpants, mainly bc I don't think he owns any bc I hate how they look. But DS is very preppy, the kid loves to wear jeans and polos, usually bc he's trying to impress some girl lol. If he felt more comfortable in sweatpants, I'd go get him some to wear, since I think it's more important to be comfy and learn.

Re: Sweatpants for school?

Our whole family is all about comfort. My sons only like to wear elastic pants. They wear sweatpants to school everyday.

I try to buy nicer shirts to compensate for the sweatpants. They have an assortment of RL, Abercrombie and Crewcuts as well as character t shirts.

This is what I'm curious about. Do you mean athletic pants or actual thick sweatpants? In my school, the boys all wear athletic pants but NOBODY wears actual sweats. So, no, I wouldn't send him in sweats. But he wears athletic pants 3 out of 5 days.
