My father was a self-employed retailer. It would have been a cold day in hell and the end of his marriage if he kept the family business open on Thanksgiving.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I don't really have an opinion on it either way, although i do NOT go out shopping at all on Thanksgiving or the days after it. I can't stand the crowds/traffic/parking wars and so on.
Don't a lot of stores hire seasonal help to cover those tough holiday-season shifts? Although i gues that wouldn't help if you're a manager, you'd have to be there anyway.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
Morally I do not agree with them being opened. However, since they are I will go shopping if I see something I need on sale. Retail is funny like that. I mean I wouldnt go into a line of work that I knew could have the possibility of staying opened if I didnt want to work on holidays. Retail is just one of these places. I did my duty back in the day. I worked for a non profit and never saw my family on Thanksgiving. 10 yrs later I chose a field that allowed me to work m-f 8-4 and then I leave.

It doesnt bother me really. BUt like a PP said, these employees knew what they were signing up for, by working in retail.
Also, DH owns a few restaurants/bagel stores, and one happens to be across the st from Target and other big stores. So every year, he opens at 3am to accommodate all the early shoppers. He's the only food establishment open, so he does good. He's also open on all Holidays until noon..it stinks, but people want food! It's just a way of life for us, when owning a food business. That money is hard to refuse, being that busy, and I am sure that's the reason all these stores are open. They rely on that extra business, as does my family.
First of all, he is not losing his holidays for being open a few hours in the morning. I didn't "sign up for this" ok? The earliest stores opened when i started doing this was 7 am. Do you think I don't have the right to be ****** that every year it gets earlier and earlier?my store used to open at 6am, then 5 am, then 3 am, then midnight. Now my store opens at 10pm, we have to be there at 9pm. But guess what, that's not enough for the company, they want our specific store to open early to accommodate the early crowds which means being there at 8pm. And no, I don't get anything "extra" as a salaried manager. And before anyone says "hey you don't like it, get another job" let me tell you it isn't as simple as that because I've been trying for years. I really wish people would think about what they say before jumping to conclusions, we get treated like trash...
Take it down a notch. My husband's stores arent open a few hours, he also goes into work in the middle of the night. No Xmas mornings here for us. But, it is what it is, and I cant change it. We depend on the holiday season for this extra money.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
i don't support shops open on Thanksgiving - the ones opening for holiday shopping. I don't get gas, I don't make a 7-11 run...the only thing I might buy that day is n the early am - fresh bread or an ingredient my mother desperately needs that she forgot to buy and I apologize to the cashier while paying because I hate that they have to work.
the people who are saying that people who have to work in retail on Thanksgiving night 'they knew what they signed up for when they took the job' - what in the world are you talking about? they didn't anticipate THIS.
you know going in about crazy holiday hours, working christmas eve and the MESS your place will be when you finally close and you know that the Friday after thanksgiving is LONG LONG day that starts super early...
but opening up for business ON Thanksgiving night is new. people who work in management aren't people who just came on for extra holiday pay - how could they have anticipated that this would all happen?
but i worked retail in college so that shapes my view of this

Personally I would not bring small children to TRU on BF. I went there last year and was elbowed so many times in the middle of the afternoon. It was insane. I would not want a small child to be hurt by crazy people. As for deals, I think you can do better now or closer to the holidays. BF deals are rare now.

I dont really care if the stores are open or not and as far as the people being able to spend a holiday with their family....they knew the situation when they took the job.
Anyone who works retail knows that they will work crazy hours during the holidays so I do not feel bad for them.
That is complete crap, when I started this 10 years ago black Friday opening was 7 am, not 9pm thanksgiving night. The holidays are crazy I'll give you that, I can deal with the hustle and bustle, but please, don't speak about it unless you've experienced, because you have no idea what we deal with...
Last time I checked... there is a thing called at will employment. You don't HAVE to work there. Sorry to be like this, but you want to claim that "i make your blood boil", so why am I going to sugar coat it. You have the CHOICE to not work in retail. That's the bottom line.
As I said my point still stands. In this economy, I don't think we should be complaining about employers who are EMPLOYING people.

And before anyone says "hey you don't like it, get another job" let me tell you it isn't as simple as that because I've been trying for years. I really wish people would think about what they say before jumping to conclusions, we get treated like trash...
Then I would suggest that you simply "suck it up" for one night.
Every job has it's negatives. You say that people will never understand what you have to go through since I haven't "lived it".
Well your job isn't the only one with negatives. My job has a slew of negatives, but you are not going to hear me openly complain about my job's negatives because I deal with it because I value having a job over dealing with some negatives (as you should too).

YOU make my blood boil because you're rude, arrogant, and you think you have all the answers - in general, not just in reference to this thread but all the time. You're right, I don't "have to" work there, I choose to, because I would like to have my mortgage paid, put food on the table, save for retirement, and have health insurance (which by the way is going to be footing the bill for the multitude of back and foot problems I now have as a result of things I've had to do all these years - contrary to popular belief we don't just stand there and ring people up all day) I am by no means rich, it pays the bills. And for the record no one is complaining about people being employed. They are employed regardless of what time the store opens so maybe next time take a second to think about the question before snipping back with one of your snide replies. If you can honestly say that the retailers aren't greedy with all this black Friday nonsense and that it hasn't gotten out of control, then you know what, I'll give thanks this year that I don't have to know or deal with you or people like you in the real world - then I'll head off to work after some turkey...

And this is the irony of it all! It's so true! Macy's one day sale last week will be the best deals of the whole season. It's like that every year. I think it's like that for most stores with the exceptions of the big door buster deals on electronics. Yet everyone is stampeding to get the BF "deals"; meanwhile we are all just falling for BF hype.
ITA. I have been price checking appliances for almost a year now at multiple stores and this week is when they are the lowest. I was able to secure the Black Friday price for one of the appliances that was actually going to be a door buster price today. I purchased a suite of appliances and when I asked they gave me that price. Seriously BF is all hype. Some people like the sport of it. Fine, there are some deals for those who want to be first in line, but for the majority of people it is not going to be worth it. They will end up spending more on the BF deal than they could have gotten before BF with a coupon and a sale.
For example today you can go to Macy's and there are ties at 60% off the sale price. That makes them about $10 for a tie. On BF those exact same ties are going to be there but there will be a mad house for that price. These ties might be from last season, but they are fine ties. I purchased 3 of them for DH. He is happy I did not spend the $60 they originally cost. They are classic looking. I can say the exact same thing for bed linens. At the one day sale the twin sheet sets were $19. Now they are $29 or sometimes $25. When the exact same sheets are $40 for full price. If people look at the circular you will see that the prices are really the same as a regular sale day and sometimes they are not even better than the regular sale price.

I think it's very sad that these employees are working on Thanksgiving.
I understand supermarkets being open part of the day....but really that's about it.
I've never spent a Thanksgiving with my DH - he works for the LIRR and since his normal day off isn't a Thursday, he doesn't get the day off BUT that's a 24/7/365 operation.
There is no reason why KMart needs to be open in my opinion.
ITA My DH work for the LIRR too. His days off are Thursdays but still had to work on Thanksgiving because people with seniority get to pick which holidays to have off first. Since working there he goes to work every Christmas too. We have two small children it is so sad when he has to leave on Christmas day. It should be such a happy day for hem but they say I wish Daddy was here multiple times

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I think it sucks. Why does Thanksgiving have to be about Christmas shopping? It's terrible and takes all the meaning out of Thanksgiving. I think people saying that retail people should suck it up, or they knew what they were getting into, is very insensitive. There are certain jobs you go into knowing you will work holidays (fireman, cop, rr, etc.) But I don't think when people "signed up" for retail jobs they knew what they were getting into. I feel really bad for them. As a fireman, my husband always has to work holidays and will be working this Thanksgiving, but that to me is a completey different thing. I don't see why people can't wait and go shopping the next day. There's plenty of time until Christmas. Give it a rest.

The constant refrain of "Don't complain, at least you have a job" is how working conditions are deteriorating. What happened to worker's rights? I just wonder where the limit is. Of course we all should have the right to stand up for ourselves when we think we are being treated unreasonably.
And I very much disagree with the fact that retail workers knew what they were getting into. Obviously some did, but there's a reason this subject is coming up this year -- because a large percentage of these people (Mrs213 obviously included) were never asked to come in on Thanksgiving before. When they were hired, they were told that they would have Thanksgiving off. So to me, this is no different than any office worker randomly getting called in for Thanksgiving because the company wants to make more money.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I have gone Black Friday shopping a few times. When I first started going (maybe 4 or 5 years ago) stores opened around 5am. I went with DH's cousins, and we all had a good time. We would stay up looking at the flyers and make a game plan of where to go, and not even go to sleep that night. I would never miss out on family time though to shop on black friday.
Now that they are opening ON Thanksgiving, it's ridiculous. I have to be honest though, until reading some of this thread, I never thought about it from the retail end of it. I will most likely be doing my black friday shopping online from now on. Thank you for opening my eyes to the other side of it

Thank you so much for saying this Emily, that's exactly my point about this. I was talking with my boss the other day about how Black Friday used to be fun. I'm more than happy to deal with the hustle and bustle of the holidays - that part is fun, but having to be at work at 8pm Thanksgiving night to sell some cardigans is crazy. It gets to the point now where we loathe this time of year. No one enjoys the holiday season anymore. The only day of the year now that the store is closed is Christmas day. We are even open on Easter. I have to work Christmas Eve every year also. Perhaps my delivery was less than polite but when people say things like "well at least you're employed" or "hey you chose it" it gets me riled up because people who don't do this have no idea what it's like to be in retail. Even my own friends and family when they make plans I can't make they say "just take the day off" or "just call in sick" - we can't, we HAVE to be there to run the store. I never see my parents or siblings because it's next to impossible to schedule a day where we are all off together and Thanksgiving is one of those days. And what's really sad is that I happen to have it better than most. So when someone says oh just quit or you chose this, you know what? No, I didn't choose this, so yeah, "blood boiling" is the term that came to mind

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I don't shop on Thanksgiving, I get it all done before or after but I have worked on the holiday (I worked in the restaurant and hospitality business when I was younger) and my family always found a way to work around it.
My Thanksgiving isn't happening at 9PM...so I could understand being annoyed if you had to work at 3 or 4, but at 9, my holiday is wrapped up.
That being said, my brother works for the town and had to go to work straight from Christmas dinner last year bc of the blizzard that was coming in. He went in that night and worked for 72 hours straight. I'd take working thanksgiving over that.
Every job has its negatives, you deal with it.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
It's a tough call - i chose other...
I worked retail for over 20 years before the job I have now, so I know how tough it can be. But, I also understand that in the current economy these stores have to do everything they can to get even the smallest slice of the pie so they try to "one up" the other guy by being open more hours. I used to have to do "iron shifts" meaning every weekend I'd be there from 6am to 1am during the holiday season...it's retail. The hours suck, the pay sucks and more than anything, the customers usually suck (at least the ones that make their presence known), but you do it cuz that's your job. And if, when I first started my job the hours were easier and got worse, I kind of just took it as part of the game...if I still want a job, my company has to do whatever they can to get business.
BTW, now I work in an "essential" job and have to work - Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day -- and I make less than I did in retail...but since my former company did go out of business due to the economy I'm just thankful I have a job at all.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I don't really like going to any store on Thanksgiving day unless its something we need last minute from the grocery store (and sometimes we do drive through at DD because we deliver some Thanksgiving Equinox meals on the morning).
It would be nice if everyone could stay home but they can't (DH works in a hospital and has to work on Thanksgiving, not in the evening though). I get that its retail and they don't necessarily NEED to be open then, so it would be annoying for the workers. Annoying for them, yes but do I feel REALLY bad about it? Not really
