I work in a TV station. We never close. Is TV essential? How many people watch TV on Thanksgiving? Almost everybody! Think of how big the day is for TV: Thanksgiving day parade, football, specials, etc.
IMO, the work YOU do is certainly essential, especially this time of year.
My backwards station doesn't even do news on the holidays. So it means nothing. But if you're looking for Matlock to watch on Thanksgiving, you found the right place.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I think just about every major retail store is opening 12am or sooner, so you would be boycotting a lot of stores. I'm not crazy about it, and feel bad for the workers. On the flip side, they probably get paid double time, and I'm sure there are a few of them that are thrilled with that.

No. The last place I want to be on a holiday is out fighting the crowds. Id much rather be in my warm home with my closest family.

Plenty of people have to work holidays - cops, firefighters, medical personnel, etc. It doesn't bother me. I think it's the nature of retail businesses...and if I forget something, I'll be thrilled for the stores that are open.
But yes it suck to have to leave Thanksgiving.
But cops, firefighters and doctors are performing ESSENTIAL services. Not hocking cr@p to make an extra buck. Shopping on a holiday is NOT essential in any way shape or form.
Lots of jobs aren't essential jobs but are still required to work on Thanksgiving.
I'm not sure why people consider Thanksgiving is a holy day that everyone should be home with their family anymore than New Year's Eve or any other major holiday. If someone I loved couldn't be there on Thanksgiving, I'd just be holding it another day.

There's nothing worse than being at work with nothing to do, so if I had to be there anyway, I'd rather people be coming to the store.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I dont have a problem with shopping on Thanksgiving - if there are items on sale or things I need which I want to get, I should have that option of it being available at a store.
Having worked a retail job in high school/college, I know that holidays aren't a great time for the employees but thats the nature of the beast.
Plus, some companies offer holiday overtime pay to account for that, at one of my old jobs, employees got an extra vacation day if they worked a holiday- and some places offered incentives too....There ARE people who dont really make a big deal about Thankgiving, esp if they dont have families or aren't observant - honestly dont see the big deal about this..Business is always business, tough luck if its not convenient for retail workers.

I think everyone needs a day off and a family day! I think this world is crazzzzy not not even honor holidays anymore... (I am going to date myself and I was very young but I remember when Sunday's everything was closed) I think there should be days were there is nothing open and everyone can enjoy a holiday and family time! It is just getting too much!

But you DO realize that that's going again all progress made over the last 100 years, don't you?
Like 100 years ago, people worked 16+ hour days, had no Sundays off, etc...
Is that a sign of progress to be open on Thanksgiving in 2011 when they could be open just as well the next day?

I dont consider working less to really be a sign of "progress" in asmuch as technology has made our lives much easier, but in terms of raw manpower we are still putting in the same amount of hours, except its displayed differently (automated machinery has made the need for backbreaking labor that required 16+ hour workdays 100 years ago almost non-existent).
I also think it depends on the stores' policies. Stores like Macys, JC Penneys or retail outlets at the mall - if they choose to close, I dont consider that to be a problem because who really needs to buy those pair of shoes ON Thanksgiving Eve? Yet, other stores like Waldbaums, Trader Joes, Wal-Mart, Target, etc offer goods/services that are useful up until midnight, so I dont see any problem if they remain open.. The private sector is always free to do what it does, if a bunch of customers CHOOSE not to shop that day, and if workers CHOOSE to take vacation/personal days - then let the store evaluate that policy since business is going to be super slow that day anyway..but I dont think we should require all stores since some business are internationally based or require international communications and those countries could give a rat's a$$ about Americans eating Turkey next Thursday night.

I don't know. We still have labor laws in this country - and thankfully we have unions too. I don't think we're near Triangle Shirtwaist Factory era.
Stores will do what they can to hype up, market & get customers in.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I do NO shopping on Thanksgiving or Black Friday. Years of working retail and dealing with un-grateful, rude crazies on black friday morning have turned me against it.
I believe that Thanksgiving is a Holiday for all and store should be closed.

there are lots of stores open on thanksgiving and always have been...bakeries, supermarkets etc
limited hours but still...the show must go on.
I do think it stinks if you are forced to work. my mom worked for the post office and was forced to work many holidays when I was a kid.
I on the other hand, worked in a haagen dazs shop decorating cakes and I LOVED serving people on holidays...everyone was generally so much nicer, and I was always home in time for turkey.
so I don't know. I am hoping it will be less crazy since there are more hours to get deals so people won't be trampled to death but I can't say whether I "support" it or not.
ITA
I don't care since its a need being fullfilled. If we weren't such maniacs trying to get in those doors at midnight they wouldn't be opening earlier and earlier. I refused to be treated like cattle. I shop later. Sure I missed the savings for things I was already WILLING to spend money on! oh well.
Working... I worked tons of holidays in my life. Meh. Overtime is awesome LOL

I dont really care if the stores are open or not and as far as the people being able to spend a holiday with their family....they knew the situation when they took the job.
Anyone who works retail knows that they will work crazy hours during the holidays so I do not feel bad for them.

I think its ridiculous. The people that work in these stores should be able to have a holiday. I don't buy into the whole black friday/shopping thing anyway.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I have worked most major holidays doing "essential services". I know how it feels to miss out on the holidays with your family. I think it stinks that anyone in any job has to work the holidays.
However if some of these business didnt stay open then possibly they couldnt afford so many employees. Many of these employees get extra pay for the holidays too(i never have or ever will). the extra savings you can get that day can be very helpful although i do realize how ridiculous it is.
I have celebrated every Thanksgiving the weekend before with my family for years and it has never been less special.( They celebrate on the day of also but dont tell me about it )

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
We have tons of walmart employees as patients in our practice and walmart makes EVERYONE work thanksgiving and black Friday, typically a 12 hour shift. Most walmarts are open 24 hours this year to avoid another trampolling incident. From what my patients tell me, walmart doesn't allow overtime, so they will all have less hours next week which means they aren't earning any extra money by sacrificing their holiday. And most employees that are not management only got their schedules earlier this week, making it very hard to plan anything for thanksgiving.
I personally think it sucks ballz that the entire meaning of the holiday season has been tarnished by our society's need to shop, it's not like this panicked 48 hours is going to fuel the economy to a level that will even be noticed. More cheap krap from china, leaving more Americans unemployed and our dollar looking like the new peso.
I will be a cold day in he11 before I ever shop on thanksgiving or black Friday.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
Yes, some places offer overtime. But many (as KellyFG attests) do not--they just reduce hours during the week. So you give up your holiday for what--so someone can get a TV for a few $$$ less?
My mother was a nurse, and we often celebrated holidays on different weekends--if she was off Thanksgiving, she worked Christmas and vice versa. It was okay, but I know she wanted to be with her family on these holidays. But at the same time, her work was at least necessary. She didn't get OT either by the way, it was a normal day of pay.
I work in the public sector, and work many of the minor holidays and holiday weekends. Luckily, we are still closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, though I do wonder if that will change one day.

I think this thread is representative of our modern days.
1/ businesses know people need their job so they will do whatever they want without restrictions. Again we are going backward in time going against all the progress that were made to give workers days off, holidays, shorter work days, etc... I don't see that as progress
2/ people don't give a crapola about others as long as they are not affected by it or it benefits them.
Just read this, and your points sum up my thoughts exactly.
All those who see no issue with this--do you or your loved ones have to work on Thanksgiving? I would guess no--if you did, you would probably think differently. It is not necessary to have a store open on a National Holiday so people can go buy crap one day earlier. Seriously, they can shop online if they can't wait IMO.
BIL often has to work on holidays, but I don't have an issue with people working. We have a "day after Thanksgiving" Thanksgiving meal, which I actually enjoy more. It doesn't feel like a forced, contrived holiday that we "have to" celebrate. We are thankful all year long, and if there is another day that we can get together to share a meal, it means more to me than eating Thanksgiving ON Thanksgiving just because of tradition.
Christmas is also spread over several days, and even birthdays in our family are over several days. We celebrate when it's convenient, and makes us happier, not when Hallmark tells us to.
Then again, I'm definitely not a stickler for tradition for most things..... I could have an entire thread just talking about all the traditions I don't follow.....
hmmm..... I may just do that.....

Thanksgiving is a legal holiday, so I would think that they would get time and a half or double time for working that day. It has nothing to do with overtime. Maybe someone that works retail can chime in. Although maybe that just applies to the grocery stores.

Walmart has been under fire for years for unfair labor practices, I'm not sure if this was one of the issues. Basically if you get paid time and half to work Thanksgiving, they short you the equal amount of hours that week. So regardless of how you slice the pie they do not earn extra money (compared to their usual weekly pay)for working on a legal holiday.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
My dh doesnt work for a store, and he always has to work on thanksgiving. this year he specifically took off. Although I am technically off (I'm a lawyer), there have been years where I have had to do some work or be on a call. My friend, also a lawyer, was once called in the middle of thanksgiving dinner and put immediately to work.
i don't think it's right. it's one day. life will go on. true emergency workers are a different story--hospitals, firemen, police, etc.

I think it's very sad that these employees are working on Thanksgiving.
I understand supermarkets being open part of the day....but really that's about it.
I've never spent a Thanksgiving with my DH - he works for the LIRR and since his normal day off isn't a Thursday, he doesn't get the day off BUT that's a 24/7/365 operation.
There is no reason why KMart needs to be open in my opinion.
