Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
Plenty of people have to work holidays - cops, firefighters, medical personnel, etc. It doesn't bother me. I think it's the nature of retail businesses...and if I forget something, I'll be thrilled for the stores that are open.
But yes it suck to have to leave Thanksgiving.

I would not go shopping on Thanksgiving...I think it's awful that stores make their employees work on a holiday that is so family centered. The only people working on a holiday should be those whose jobs are absolutely necessary.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I will not support these stores on Thanksgiving. 1) Because I am with MY family that evening and 2) last week I saw a twenty something girl crying in the Walmart parking lot b/c they are making her work all night that night and she has no sitter for her two kids. She was telling a co-worker she's afraid of getting fired if she doesn't work the shift.
This just made me feel awful. DH and I decided to do as much shopping this year at small local merchants and the rest, do online for Cyber Monday.

I think it's absolutley ridiculous!
Everyone has the right to be home with their families!
It gets me so angry that we went from Black Friday starting at 6AM on FRIDAY, to now starting ON Thanksgiving!
Horrible!

I put Other because I do not support these stores being open on Thanksgiving but I don't shop on Black Friday regardless.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I put other. I don't really care. If I need something last minute, I appreciate the stores being open on Thanksgiving.
I understand why people are upset. Retail working hours stink. I don't really see how much difference a few hours will really make in sales.

I absolutely do NOT support this. I used to work in Retail and you only get a very limited amount of days off as it is. I would be FUMING MAD if i was told to come in on Thanksgiving

YUP.
My sister is working Christmas Eve and Christmas day this year. She's off for Thanksgiving. It's the nature of her business. I understand medical professionals and civil servants probably get more and have better jobs overall and had more career choices than retail workers, but it's still the nature of the beast.
Like I said I'm glad the grocery store is open for a few hours. I don't see WHY they stores have to open on Thanksgiving night, but I don't have a problem with it per se. I do feel bad for everyone who works in retail. I know those hours do stink.

I'll put it bluntly...I think it's utterly disgusting and an example of what is wrong with the values in this country and the blatant commericialization of the holidays.

No, I will not be shopping on Thanksgiving or at midnight, for that matter, on Black Friday.
I do go shopping with my mom, sister, aunt and cousin on Black Friday as it's become a bit of a tradition, but we wake up that morning at a REASONABLE hour and go shopping. We're not camped out in front of a store waiting for the doors to open.

But cops, firefighters and doctors are performing ESSENTIAL services. Not hocking cr@p to make an extra buck. Shopping on a holiday is NOT essential in any way shape or form.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
Yes i don't have an issue with them being open. In this day & age, I don't think we should complain about places EMPLOYING people.
Besides I am sure many places (not all but many) will pay holiday time. I am sure plenty of people enjoy the extra cash for the holidays.

I work in a TV station. We never close. Is TV essential? How many people watch TV on Thanksgiving? Almost everybody! Think of how big the day is for TV: Thanksgiving day parade, football, specials, etc.
So stores are now open? Who cares? They obviously do enough business to warrant it. It's a busy time of year.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I think this thread is representative of our modern days.
1/ businesses know people need their job so they will do whatever they want without restrictions. Again we are going backward in time going against all the progress that were made to give workers days off, holidays, shorter work days, etc... I don't see that as progress
2/ people don't give a crapola about others as long as they are not affected by it or it benefits them.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I'm not big on Black Friday either (hate shopping that day actually), but I do think we need at least one day a year when everyone has a day off (or almost everyone, I know nurses, police, etc. still work but retail is not an essential service).

Just read this, and your points sum up my thoughts exactly.
All those who see no issue with this--do you or your loved ones have to work on Thanksgiving? I would guess no--if you did, you would probably think differently. It is not necessary to have a store open on a National Holiday so people can go buy crap one day earlier. Seriously, they can shop online if they can't wait IMO.

I think its disgusting and I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving or Black Friday.
Black Friday and its "deals" are becoming more important than the actual HOLIDAYS of Thanksgiving and Christmas. It makes me sick, I feel very strongly about it.
We have family members who stopped coming to Thanksgiving to "rest up" for Black Friday shopping.

I see the points of being home with families and a backwards society. Yet, I don't have an issue with it. And yes, my husband and I both work on Thanksgiving AND Christmas.

That's the problem, too.
it's not the stores. it's that people are willing to do it. Missing Thanksgiving dinner for sales to me really does ruin the holiday and says your priorities are messed up, but if people are willing to show up and spend money, the stores will be open.
You can't 100% blame the stores for responding to consumer demand.
