Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I personally do not shop on Black Friday, hate the crowds and would rather pay shipping charges online than deal with the chaos. My DH is FDNY so there have been plenty of holidays where he had to work either part of or the whole day, but that is a separate issue

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
Throughout HS and college I worked at a local bakery and they NEVER closed. I hated that I had to work on holidays and we didn't even have shortened hours. They would be open from 6am-4pm. It was crazy. I do go shopping on Black Friday. I don't think its a big deal to have the stores open early Friday morning. I don't get why the stores are opening earlier and earlier each year. I swear Target opened around 5am last year and I saw yesterday that they are opening at 12 am, I don't think its necessary, but I am not going to stop shopping there because I disagree with their hours of operation.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I said this on another thread and I will say it again. I think it is disgusting.
As the wife of a retail GM I cannot begin to tell you how angry this all makes me. It was bad enough when DH worked until 3 in the morning on Thanksgiving to set up for Black Friday and then have to be at his store at 2am that Friday. Now he has to be at work at 9pm on Thanksgiving for his store to open at Midnight It is ridiculous and so sad for him because he doesn't enjoy the holiday season at all. He doesn't have a choice, it is the company that dictates this. I am sure those people that made this decision are enjoying their Thanksgiving dinner while their employees are working their a$$es off to sell a few more TVs. And people are crazy. He sends me video of the rushes of people for a $10 toaster, of how they trash his store and push and shove for the hot video game. We drive by his store every year and 2pm and there are already people lined up. That is sick.
A man in Walmart a few years ago LOST HIS LIFE and for what? So people could save a few bucks?
My DH's store had to be shut down a few years ago because there was a brawl in the computer section. Sure lets give thanks to for what we have by fighting over a laptop.
I think Black Friday is awful. Every year I am petrified that this will be the year my DH gets hurt.

I think its ridiculous. The people that work in these stores should be able to have a holiday. I don't buy into the whole black friday/shopping thing anyway.
Agree.
I'm doing all my shopping on Etsy! i'm serious!
No one i know needs another purse or hand lotion from the body shop or a sweater! I'm getting personalized and or hand made stuff made in the good old USA.
These businesses need to let people be with family on holidays.

My father was a self-employed retailer. It would have been a cold day in hell and the end of his marriage if he kept the family business open on Thanksgiving.

I think just about every major retail store is opening 12am or sooner, so you would be boycotting a lot of stores. I'm not crazy about it, and feel bad for the workers. On the flip side, they probably get paid double time, and I'm sure there are a few of them that are thrilled with that.
The majority of them are not getting paid double time.

These were the days he closed:
-New Year's Day -Passover (First 2 days in the 80s when RR ran the show and people had money) -Fourth of July -Rosh Hashanah (both days) -Yom Kippur -Christmas

What about restaurants who also don't have to be open but make their employees work?

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
as a side note.. some of us WANT to work Thanksgiving.
Back when I made hourly wage I hated losing money on holidays. Being part American Indian I really don't care about Thanksgiving outside watching the game. So why not make some money?!
I would (and still do) volunteer myself to work any and all holidays. Granted we get those days off now that I'm a payroll paid civilized (old) working woman. I still make sure to never take extra days around this time of year. Its such a waste (to me) I am STILL home with family for the dinner and we still celebrate xmas at sometime.
To others thanksgiving is important (which I can't relate) so I have always offered to work those days they want vacation on. Same for when I was working at McDonalds... I BEGGED to work holidays because of time and a half and the fact it was usually slow. Easter, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Xmas, I don't care.. I'd work them. They are just days in the year for me. Time with my family can always be found.
I think (for me) it has to do with the fact my Dad was out to sea 9 months out of a year. He always missed xmas and thanksgiving, easter, labor day and memorial day too for that matter. We learned that family time is important. So important you take it whenever you can find it. The date on the calendar makes no difference. I guess they instilled this into us when we were young so we wouldn't be bummed out? It stuck.
We still don't celebrate thanksgiving and xmas together. I won't fly into the snow for them and they won't drive in the snow for me. Seems fair. In HS and college I often went to other peoples homes for those holidays without much thought to if my family wanted me home.
Sorry to those who it bothers. I am not belittling the holidays or their meanings. This is just my opinion. However, I always felt like they (employers) should try to help out with those with families. I know I always felt bad seeing someone at work when they wanted to be home with their kids. Be it a holiday or the kid is just sick that day.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I used to boycott the stores that were open on Thanksgiving Day, but now there are so many it is nearly impossible. I don't shop though, not even at midnight, that's for sure!

I think it's totally ridiculous. Everyone should get to enjoy Thanksgiving with their loved ones and thereafter let the rat race begin. I feel like the holidays are getting to a point where nobody is even paying attention to Thanksgiving - like it doesn't exist!
I answered other because while I will not shop there that day, I may shop there during the season.

Yes i don't have an issue with them being open. In this day & age, I don't think we should complain about places EMPLOYING people.
Besides I am sure many places (not all but many) will pay holiday time. I am sure plenty of people enjoy the extra cash for the holidays.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I hate it, I'm in retail. Store opens at 10, employees there at 9. Everyone is fed up, there's nothing we can do. Thanksgiving is gone. Sadly, boycotting won't work, once the company has already done something they will never go back...

I dont really care if the stores are open or not and as far as the people being able to spend a holiday with their family....they knew the situation when they took the job.
Anyone who works retail knows that they will work crazy hours during the holidays so I do not feel bad for them.
That is complete crap, when I started this 10 years ago black Friday opening was 7 am, not 9pm thanksgiving night. The holidays are crazy I'll give you that, I can deal with the hustle and bustle, but please, don't speak about it unless you've experienced, because you have no idea what we deal with...

I don't care either way. My husband works all holidays if that's his schedule, and I don't see people boycotting the airport or land borders on Thanksgiving

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
I think it's ridiculous that retail workers have to work. The only people that should work are those in restaurants, bakeries, supermarkets, gas stations, transport, and emergency (police, firemen, hospitals, etc). Some of them should have limited hours (supermarkets, bakeries).
I find it sad that anyone actually shops on Thanksgiving! Shouldn't you be with family and friends? Perhaps you don't have any in the area, etc. but allow one day away from shopping.
However, I live in a country where almost everything is closed (not gas stations and some restaurants, and stores at the train station and airport) EVERY SUNDAY. At first I found it annoying because I have to do lots of food shopping on Saturday, but now I love it! There is nothing like that feeling of waking up on a Sunday and just relaxing. You see families going for walks, visiting other families, etc.
You also aren't allowed to make a lot of noise on Sundays, but this rule is usually followed more in smaller towns- no lawn mowing or washing your car, lol. Believe me, the police will be called.
I find it sad that all these stores are open. Thanksgiving is a pretty big holiday, like Christmas. What's the big deal having shopping closed on those TWO days a year.

I think things like the supermarket should close by noon if they are open, and black friday sale stores shouldnt open til like 11pm - so that the workers have plenty of time to be with their families.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
It doesnt bother me really. BUt like a PP said, these employees knew what they were signing up for, by working in retail.
Also, DH owns a few restaurants/bagel stores, and one happens to be across the st from Target and other big stores. So every year, he opens at 3am to accommodate all the early shoppers. He's the only food establishment open, so he does good. He's also open on all Holidays until noon..it stinks, but people want food! It's just a way of life for us, when owning a food business. That money is hard to refuse, being that busy, and I am sure that's the reason all these stores are open. They rely on that extra business, as does my family.

I think it's terrible that people have to work on holidays. It's not fair to them. My guess is if they don't work, they'd be out of a job.

Re: Stores Open on Thanksgiving....do you support them?
i don't think it is right for the employees to have to come to work on Thanksgiving. this should be a day for the families to get together and spend time with each other. the companies are turning this into a business and its all about making money. i'm not in support of this.

First of all, he is not losing his holidays for being open a few hours in the morning. I didn't "sign up for this" ok? The earliest stores opened when i started doing this was 7 am. Do you think I don't have the right to be ****** that every year it gets earlier and earlier?my store used to open at 6am, then 5 am, then 3 am, then midnight. Now my store opens at 10pm, we have to be there at 9pm. But guess what, that's not enough for the company, they want our specific store to open early to accommodate the early crowds which means being there at 8pm. And no, I don't get anything "extra" as a salaried manager. And before anyone says "hey you don't like it, get another job" let me tell you it isn't as simple as that because I've been trying for years. I really wish people would think about what they say before jumping to conclusions, we get treated like trash...
