Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
i got a basic intro to other faiths from a comparative religions course i took as an undergrad. as part of our final, we had to visit worship services of 2 other faiths and write about our experiences.
also, from taking history of music courses, i learned a lot about catholicism since that is where the origins of polyphonic music started.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
I knew a little from havign Jewsih freinds & learning about world religions in HS global studies glasses, and then I took a World Religions class in college, but there isn't time to get into too many specifics, especially when you get down to the differences in different types of the same religion. I took a Christian marriage class too, which was really interesting--it really gave a good perspective of differences in the various forms of Christianity, by just study one rite.
And I most of what I know about Judaism I learned from LIW/LIF

But I have to say that since my HS days- until now, I have NEVER understood why so many wars were fought between Catholics and Protestants. I see so many more similarities than differences between the two.
The main reason that there has been war between the two, is that for centuries, the Catholic Church was not only the religion of the people, but because of its leaders, schools, churches, etc. it is was also the government, the educational system, and often the economy. Catholicism was around for well over a thousand years before Martin Luther started the Reformation, so therefore, there was more at stake than just the faith. Land, education, jobs, etc. were tied up in the church and there was a power struggle and therefore wars. Does that make sense?
Also, there was so much HATRED towards the catholics by Proestants... I am thinking of my own people's experience as an Irish- Catholic.... i am not saying it's right, but that was the reality. Catholics were, and continue to be, discriminated against and in generations gone by, that led to war.
And also to comment on your thought that there are more simlariities than differences.... yes, that is true to a degree. but there are several CRUCIAL and key points that Catholics believe that Protestants do not, and that is where we differ.

Yes, we have a few different ones in my family. I try to pay attention to them all. Its kind of ironic, since I am NOT a religious person AT ALL!!

Not really. I have a few good friends who are Jewish, so I know a little bit about that, but not alot. I really should try to be more enlightened about lots of other religions. I do find them all very interesting.

I totally understand that! i just never did (nor do I now) understand why tolerance of the other couldn't overcome the hatred as you said. (Can you tell I was raised in a home with a lot of tolerance discussions

Who knows? I don't know why either. I can't even tell you how many times here in the US of A how many times I have encountered anti-Catholicism.... some by just ignorant people, but mainly through the media. the things that comes out on the news and in TV shows, movies, etc.

I can't say that I'm knowledgeable about other religions but I do find it interesting to learn new things about the various faiths, what others believe in and their customs.

Catholicism IS Christianity. Catholics believe in Chirst. The Catholic Church was the FIRST Christian Church. Jesus' apostles and first followers established the Roman Catholic Church.
ALL the other Christian faiths are considered Protestant... they stemmed from Catholicism. Basically, in a nutshell, Marthin Luther started Reformation in the 1500's. He didn't like aspects the Catholic Church.... from there, other denominations grew such as Methodist, Quaker, and most recently evangelical, Pentecostal, Mormonism, etc.
Although we all believe in Christ as the saviour, there are core beliefs and practices in Catholicism that were not adapted by the Protestant churches.

Yes I do.. because my mother is Catholic and my father is Jewish but he converted to Buddism so I have first hand knowledge about all three. My best friend is a somewhat conservative Jew so she's filled me in on a lot and I actually know more about the religion than my dad does, but like I said, he's a Buddist now.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
Probably more than most people do..
I read a book that had a lot in it regarding the Muslim faith and I found it fasinating. Ever since then I like to find out what I can.
I feel that if my kids grow up with an understanding of what others believe they will have tolerance for other religiions.

I could never really grasp the suspicions people had for JFK because he was Catholic. I had learned that the Presidents had always been Christian, so I didn't see the big deal. I intellectually know the reasons now, but I still find it hard to relate to.

I was raised Lutheran, so I know about that (what I remember) and I know a little about Catholicism and Jewish. I've been agnostic for almost 10 years now, so I've forgotten some things.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
yep, becuase I have a very diverse array of friends... I have jewish, hindu, muslim, and christian friends... (I'm catholic.) I've been to fundamentalist christian churches, synagogues, and hindu temples. I've participated in pujas (and then ate the yummy leftovers), went to iftars (feasts breaking ramadan fast after sundown), went to fundamentalist christian sunday bible camp, and attended numerous jewish and christian ceremonies...
I think I have a decent overview of other faiths.... I don't have any budhist friends though... so I don't know much about that major religion.

not exactly..... The eastern orthodox church (greek / russian) is as old as the catholic church. If you attend one of their masses, it's reasonably similar to catholic masses pre-vatican II. I honestly believe they maintain the oldest forms of christian traditions, becuase there has been so much reform in our (catholic) church in recent years.....
oh, and they are not protestant....
I will agree, however, that I get a little miffed at times when protestants use 'christian' as a synonym to 'protestant'. I think that originated out of xenophobia.... Americans disliking all of the catholic immigrants of the 19th and 20th century.... so they had to distance themselves from us.

good point.... i'm sorry! I forgot about our orthodox friends... i am not sure exactly when or how the divide occurred between roman catholics and greek orthodox.... do you know? liturgically however, they are most similar.

I don't know for sure.... I wiki'ed it and still don't understand what they wrote. I think the catholics and orthodox formerly belonged to the same church (directly formed by the apostles) and the orthodox split from that church in the 5th century, and the catholics split from it in the 11th? Doesn't sound right, but that's what was on wiki.....
