Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
I have to say, the article and thread about the praying man being removed from the flight really opened my eyes. I didn't realize how little people know about Judaism and Jewish customs.
So do you think you are knowledgeable about the customs/practices/beliefs of other religions?

I thought so but apparently not. I thought only Muslims had to pray at certain times of the day.

Not particularly. I've had friends from a lot of different faiths, but really only learned the basics. I am fascinated by religions though. I love to learn about other customs, cultures and beliefs.

What course did you take? I took a philosophy or religion course in college but it was very abstract. I was hoping to learn more about specific faiths.

I feel the same way. I've learned a lot because I find religious practices personally interesting and I'm open minded, but at the same time, I'm very aware that I there's a lot I don't know about religions and cultures different from my own.

I used to go to church with my friend from college every Sunday. I think I am pretty knowledgable of the Catholic religon, maybe even more than my own religon.

I took one a while back at Suffolk it was History of World Religions. It was very interesting.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
I went to catholic school for 12 years so no, I am not particularly knowledgable about other religions.
I have learned quite a lot about Judiasm because the company I work is owned by Orthodox Jews. A lot of men in the office building pray in our boardroom for afternoon minyan, the office is kosher for passover, we are closed monday, etc. If I didn't work here, I wouldn't know a tenth of what I learned working here.

Not at all and I wish I did have a better understanding of how they worked. My SIL is Jewish and I wish I was more aware of her customs/traditions/holidays.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
i think i am---especially since my sister has been working for 2 yrs in a school with Jewish orthodox and has been dating a man of Muslim faith---i learned even more than i ever knew.
but i think some people just go by "assumptions" rather than finding out about things themself. that kind of saddnes me since it leads to why there are so many misunderstandings like the man being kicked off the flight

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions
I consider myself pretty knowledgable about religions - not formally educated on them - but I worked for a jewish catering company, have many jewish friends, lived in an Indian neighborhood for 10 years, teach at a catholic college, and I taught at NYU and CUNY, which are both really diverse.
Funny I was just talking about Judaism in one of my classes today and I was so suprised at how little my students knew about it. I teach in NYC but the school is not particularly diverse.

As an outsider, I can see that perspective. I have to say, I did study the Protestant Reformation. I learned about what Protestants believed. We also had several lessons on Catholicism in my public school before reading James Joyce in HS.
I have definitely learned more since those days about both religions. I have studied and read about these religions, as well as visited churches around the world of both, Catholic and Christian.
But I have to say that since my HS days- until now, I have NEVER understood why so many wars were fought between Catholics and Protestants. I see so many more similarities than differences between the two.
