Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions

I think I'm very knowledgable about different religions. 1. I was a global studies teacher for many years and understanding religions is a fundamental aspect of global studies. 2. my own studies: college, grad, post-grad AND personal interests.

for the record, Catholics are not the oldest Christians. Actually, Armenian and Ethiopian Christians are.

a quick timeline of Christianity:

Roman Empire converts in 300s under Constantine...shortly after capital moved to Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) and Rome falls into Dark Ages. By ca 1000 the two regions (western and eastern Europe) disagree about religion and split (Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox), but both are from the Roman Empire.

Protestants split in ca 1500 from Catholicism.

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions

I will admit that I know very little (in the grans scheme of things) about many other religions. But I have such a longing to know more.

but wouldn't you say that Catholics (which we could group Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox together before their split) be considered the first organized CHURCH???? there were Christians before there was an organized religion (i.e. your reference to the Armenians, for example).

Re: Spinoff- Do you think you are knowledgeable about other religions

I am or so I think I am....I was brought up in a pretty diverse area in NYC. I did go to Catholc school and I had to take a World religions course in hs and in college. When I taught 7th and 8th grade reliigion there was a majorfocus on comparative religions. Currently, I work in a public school so there are so many different kids there!

In fact, we had a pretty interesting conversation in advisory about the Pope's visit today! I was pretty impressed with what the students had to say!

I recently took a world religions class in college so I'd say I'm somewhat knowledgable! Give me a few more years and I'm sure I'll have forgotten it all!

Armenians and Ethiopians were the first nations to adopt Christianity as a religion (before Rome did), so therefore the first organized Churches, but there were even churches in Armenia before Romans were allowed to worship Christianity freely (like 1st century).

Interesting.... but again, was that really an organized religion at that point? With leaders and a set doctrine?

well, armenians and ethiopians are orthodox.... (as are most christians in the middle east). missionaries came to those 2 areas in the 6th century.... for ethiopia, it likely was from the coptic (egyptian) church, and the armenians likely from europe....

Both the orthodox church and the catholic church have common roots and are direct descendants from the apostles' church, so they're of equal age in my book.... I don't think a requirement for a religion to be 'official' is that it is adopted by a gov't.... JMO....
