Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
I've heard that soda hurts bones because of Phosphoric acid.
What about sparkling water or flavored seltzer? Those do not have Phosphoric acid in it.
DD has been asking for "soda" and I think shes too young at 3 to drink soda. So we've been giving her seltzer or sparking water instead.
I just want to make sure there's no harmful components to this.

Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
I don't know if it's bad, but my 3 year old drinks it ALL the time since I drink it. He calls it bubble water. I try to give him the flat bottle.

Ehhhh
I am pretty lax but I don't give soda and my DS is 10 and my SO's . Mine doesn't really like it, but my SO's son does and I limit it to really only when I have no choice.
There's no reason why kids need soda/seltzer/sparkling water IMO
But I don't think they'd hurt her

Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
My kids are allowed unflavored seltzer or sparkling water on occasion. I try to limit it- not because there is anything wrong with it. I just prefer them to have plain old water. But I am a weirdo when it comes to what my kids drink- I really only like them having milk or water. They get juice like 3 times a year.

I agree, I don't see the need.
Also the acidity can be damaging to tooth enamel so I wouldn't chance it.

Re: Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
Phosphoric Acid is added to dark sodas. 7-up, Sprite, ginger ale do not have it added.
It's a mold preventative to combat all the added sugar, and also adds a tangy flavor, in the form of acidity.
Seltzer, flavored or plain, does not have it added either.

Re: Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
Recent studies showed that the ph levels in seltzer can be just as damaging to teeth as sweetened soda. It erodes the enamel as someone said.

This.
AJ just hates the bubble on her tongue. Other kids love it and she knows it but she shrugs it off as 'not for her'. I think it also helps I don't drink it either except on rare occasions. Our house is a non soda house. We drink tea. Since I had to give up caffeine even that's gone to none. She gave up lemonade for her braces.
She's exclusively water now. She's 8.

My kids drink seltzer and sparkling water all the time but I didn't know it could cause damage to teeth. I'll have to research that.

I agree with your sentiment. However, there are things you can prevent and this is one of them

I don't give my DD soda and she wont' drink seltzer. Hell even I have a hard time choking down seltzer. But if it comes down to coke or seltzer, I am going to go with the seltzer and take my chances. Now seltzer is bad for you... .next water will be bad for you.

That's true but once they start with sugar drinks it's really hard to stop. So many kids are overweight and I think a big part of it is consuming drinks with calories instead of water.

How is seltzer bad for you??? It's water with bubbles?? What's so wrong with it??
Club Soda is the one with sodium in it, not seltzer.

Soda and bones question (what about seltzer)
We are not soda drinkers in our home. We have ginger ale here and there or seltzer, but mostly water and Honest drinks that we add to water if they want juice. My kids think seltzer and ginger ale is 'soda' and will occasionally ask for some here and there. I am okay with them having it once in awhile for a party or at a restaurant. But they are limited to one cup, its water after that.

It isn't. The carbonation can be bad for your teeth, but its just as bad as drinking coffee or wine on a daily basis.

It's amazing that I have such good teeth. I drink wine, coffee, seltzer, an occasional soda.
I should have teeth like George Washington by now.

I agree when it comes to soda but I meant the seltzer. My DD doesn't drink either. I wouldn't give soda but I might let her have a little seltzer if she wanted to try it.
ETA what about juice? That's full of sugar, too, but I know lots of parents who don't bat an eye at juice.

I totally agree, juice has so many calories and once they are hooked it's impossible to get them back to water. I don't mind it at parties or a friends house, but I don't serve it at my house

so funny. My 2.5 yo loves seltzer too and also calls it bubble water. I give him a wide shallow measuring spoon to pour it into and he likes putting his finger in and seeing the bubbles accumulate. We recently bought a sodastream.

Lots of water IS bad for you, actually, depending on the source. Non-filtered water can have minerals, chemicals, bacteria, etc. Bottled water isn't always regulated, and can have stuff in it, too.
Air is bad, too, since there is so much pollution everywhere.
Do what you think is best to limit how much crap your DC put in their bodies, but it's impossible to eliminate everything bad, so choose your battles.
For centuries, water was so bad for everyone that people drank mead, grog, and watered down wine instead of plain water.... even young kids.
