Now... fast forward to the Holidays. She took all of us in circle and decided to tell us our parents "had lied to us all along". Santa Claus did not exist, neither the Easter bunny.... Oh yeah, she told us all. My mom tried to do some damage control when I bursted in tears (again) and told her she had lied to me.

STFU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She responded - and it seems that I really did get through to her!

You let her off EASY in your latest e-mail back to her!! I am EXTREMELY glad you 'upset' her! That may sound terrible but for 20 years this has been weighing on you and she obviously thought NOTHING of it - so much that she doesn't even remember it - how many other children did she hurt in those early years?? She SHOULD have to think long and hard about what she did and about all of the impressionable young people she was exposed to in those early years. Now that she’s 52 and not 25, it doesn’t make what she did back then OK. I am really glad you 'reminded her' of it - it clearly was traumatic to you and to her it was so easy to dismiss.

You're a good person to try to set her mind at ease - I don't know that I would have been so nice Chat Icon

Liza, you did a fantastic job writing those letters.
I am glad you were finally able to get this off your chest. I think you spoke for a lot of us!

My 5th grade teacher was so mean, he called me stupid once in front of the whole class. There was a boy in my class who was overweight and he made fun of him all the time. And this teacher did not have youth or inexperience as a defense. Whether or not you have a photographic memory, we all remember things like this from our childhood. I wish I could confront my teacher about his behaviour, but he's probably dead by now.

Re: Should I do this? EDITED - I DID IT!!!!!! ED Again - HER response!!

Thanks ladies... The woman is in her 50's, I didn't want to make her miserable or send her tail spinning into some crisis, but I wanted to let her know that despite her (and other teachers I still did a great job, and affected other kids positively as a result.

Now I'm on a tear. There was this awful 2nd grade teacher I had and I would LOVE to give her a piece of my mind. she was pure evil and makes this 7th grade teacher look like Mother Teresa!!!

Re: Should I do this? EDITED - I DID IT!!!!!! ED Again - HER response!!

I wouldn't. I saw one of my old teachers, seventh grade actually at my middle school reunion. She was a nightmare- she called one student a ****, told me my should have aborted me, all sorts of fun comments like that. No one liked her.

She was at the reunion and I didn't even say hello.

Ok- just read your email- AWESOME JOB! I couldn't have done that hence my answer...Chat Icon

Dear Liza,

Your email definitely upset me. I'm glad you wrote to me, because I'm sure that this was important for you to tell me, but I 'm definitely pretty upset by it.

I have absolutely no memory of this incident. It occurred almost 30 years ago, as you know. (I'm currently 52, not 25.)

This sounds like a terrible thing to do to a student, and it's hard for me to believe it was me! But I do believe you, of course, and I truly apologize, from the bottom of my heart.

I am currently not teaching teachers. I have retired from teaching, and I am a social worker. I work one-to-one with college students who come to me for any number of issues or difficulties that they may be confronting. It's been a great job, and I love working at Hunter.

Best wishes,

Here is my response back!

Oh, PLEASE don't be upset...

Yes, it was important for me to tell you. Unfortunately, I have a photographic memory. Actually, its a good thing, because I also have some really wonderful memories, but the difficult ones stick with me as well.

I vowed - even as a kid, that I would someday discuss this with you. Isn't that weird?

Look, you were young, I'm sure I was no walk in the park, as many other students were not either, so I'm sure we pushed many tecahers there to the limits. But when I found your name, I knew it was meant to be.

Everything happens for a reason. I turned out really, really well from all of my experiences. I am a whole person because of them. Who knows, maybe I have my own email coming to me in another 20 years or so? I'm sure I made many mistakes on the way to where I am now that affected people without me even knowing about it....

: )

I taught the "bad class" in the school years ago. Or at least that's what they were called. That's what I was told by their previous teacher. "Good luck, because this is the worst class in the school."

First day of class, the students said to me, "Hi. We are the bad kids, so your going to hate us." Fifth graders already jaded by their education.

I told them, VERY bluntly, that that's not gonna fly with me. Not their crap, and not their thinking. Sure enough, these kids were the best kids I ever had. I remember each one of them. Fifth grade was their most successful year. My "worst" kid turned out to be a leader who was never given any opportunities to lead productively.

If I wasn't that "bad kid" once upon a time, I might have been scared, hated them, and given up. I learned from my experiences, and from all the tecahers I had.

I know your busy, but I am so glad you wrote me back, and didn't want to upset you in any way. I'm not angry or upset. This was a vow to myself. You have done many more wonderful things for people, I am sure, to balance everything out in the universe!

Wow! That's great, good for you!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Should I do this? EDITED - I DID IT!!!!!! ED Again - HER response!!

I'm so glad you got that response!! She SHOULD be upset. Teachers should understand that whether they realize it or not, everything they say and do in the classroom has a profound effect on their students - even the 'bad' ones. It was very nice of you to ease her mind. Now can you please write a letter to my second grade teacher for me? I'll share my story...

I had to go to the bathroom so I raised my hand, but she refused to call on me and instead assumed that I was going to complain about the boy sitting next to me. She actually told me to put my hand down because she wasn't going to call on me. Since I wasn't about to walk out of the room without permission I peed in my pants. Chat Icon Another boy walked past my desk and said "Mrs. ______, there's a puddle of water on the floor" and I turned to her and said "that's not water." The teacher made me go and stand by the radiator to dry my pants and decided to teach the class a lesson on evaporation, using my wet behind as the example. Chat Icon

This was the most amazing post I have ever read in my life. I really want to thank you for putting it out there for us..... If the Lord ever blesses me with a child I would only pray she/he would have a teacher as wonderful as you. You had the ability to turn something so painful into something miraculous.... Kids do very harmful things to themselves and others over stuff just like this. You should be so proud of yourself... You really are amazing!!

Thia post is so coincedental, because I was JUST last night telling my DH about a teacher who was cruel to me in 6th grade...
and how he made me so self-conscience growing up because of one small incedent very similiar to yours-

I was JUST telling DH that I wanted to google him and contact him to give him a piece of my mind,
then read your post!
Because of you I might just do this!

Kudos to you for having the courage to do this!!!

Wow, i just read this whole thread. Unbelievable sequence of events.

I have a feeling some of those young, teachers don't realize the impact they have on their students sometimes. Their words carry lots of weight because kids see teachers as figures to look up to...atleast that's how I felt about my teachers when I was in school.

I'm glad you got your closure. Chat Icon
