short term disability question - this sounded weird to me
I just got off the phone with HR at my job and she told me that STD pays 6 weeks for both vaginal and csection. that sounds weird to me..aren't you technically not deemed eligible to go back to work after a c-section for 8 weeks..i will clarify with prudential (my STD carrier) but I was just curious if anyone has heard of this.

I would def. clarify.
According to my HR, I'm only entitled to one week STD for every year I've been employed by the company (which is 4). C-section or not!

I would clarify BUT my friend who had her DD in June told me our STD company (Cigna) was doing this as well (I didn't really believe her because our HR dept in charge of this is confusing).

There is no law. It depends on your company.

There is no law. It depends on your company. Wow! Thats really interesting. I also thought this was NYS disability, not company policy. After seeing the above responses, I am starting to think my company isnt so bad. YAY for 170 bucks

Crashing, but my short-term coverage was the same. Very weird!!
I didn't have a c-section, so it didn't matter for me, but I think that if the dr says you are not able to work STD gets extended regardless.

It could be that you only receive pay for 6 weeks. You can be considered disabled by your company for 8 weeks but paid for 6. They don't have to pay anything - it depends on their policy.
But yes, I am almost positive there is a law that you are disabled for 6 weeks vaginal 8 weeks c section unless there are some complications/special reason and then it could be longer. (i.e. bedrest before you give birth, you are still disabled 6 or 8 after you give birth).

Re: short term disability question - this sounded weird to me
Some companies have private STD policies for their employees that are a little more generous than NY state. They can dictate the terms of these policies.
For our STD policy, I have to collect from the state as well and they deduct that amount from what I receive from our private carrier.

Re: short term disability question - this sounded weird to me
my company was the same. i got paid for 6 weeks. my job recognized that i may need 8 weeks since i had a c section and was willing to give me the extra time off but would only pay it if my doctor submitted paperwork stating the reasons why i couldnt return and even then, the company had the chance to deny it if they wanted.
i only took the 6 weeks paid from std and didnt bother submitting paperwork since i was all healed up and back to normal from my c section after 2 weeks

I have no clue how that all works, but I went back to work 6 weeks after my c-section and was fine

Re: short term disability question - this sounded weird to me
its not the law to pay, but they are required to HOLD your position for 8 weeks *if your deemed disabled* due to a c-section. if your dr was to sign the forms and say you could go back to work after 5 weeks and a c-section your job would only be required to hold the position for 5 weeks. make sense?
