FMLA vs Short Term Disability????

So, I figured I needed to find out exactly what my pay will be while I am gone--considering I am due in 1 month!! I am entitled to take the full 12 weeks off of work. I was told that I will be getting disabililty pay for the 6 weeks(assuming vaginal birth) or 8 (c-section) and then the rest will be without pay....I always thought there was a difference between FMLA and STD....what is it??? My company has more than 50 employees....

Re: FMLA vs Short Term Disability????

STD is the part you will get paid for... the 6 or 8 weeks depending on which type of delivery you have.

It will run concurrently with the FMLA which allows you to take up to 12 weeks of leave.

For me, I will have 6 or 8 weeks of paid STD leave, then use up my remaining vacatioin time to try to get paid as long as I can up to 12 weeks. If my vacation time runs out before the end of the 12 weeks, I will just take the rest as unpaid.

(At least this is the way it works at my company.. I'm 33 weeks and should probably have it figured out by now!)

Re: FMLA vs Short Term Disability????

I was lucky this year because I will get paid at 100% for the STD part of my leave.

My company usually only pays 75% of your salary when you go out on STD, but you can pay a little more towards your benefits to have it paid at 100%.

I knew we were going to TTC this year, so I added the extra STD... luckily, we got pregnant right away and it will come in handy!

FMLA allows you to stay out of work for medical related reasons (birth, illness....) without losing your job and benefits. Short-Term Disability is income for the time you cannot work because you are disabled. Women who give birth are considered disabled until considered "healed" which is typically by 6 weeks (8 if c-section).
