Question about Short Term Disability

I called HR back in August to let them know I am expecting and we touched on what my maternity deal would be. It sucks but I'm ok with it bc it is what it is. I get the 12 weeks FMLA unpaid except STD ($170/week) for 6 weeks vaginal or 8 weeks for C.

So I've mentioned this to a few of my friends and they said something about checking to see if there's any supplemental STD through NYS ( I think?? - I'm really bad with this stuff).

Anyway, what I'm asking is, does anyone know anything about STD and if I could get more than $170 a week, bc UHHH we live in NY and that's ridiculous.

I wonder why you are only getting 170 a week.......my employer pays us the full amount. That's weird. What short term disability company is it?

i have no idea Chat Icon i have to call HR back but i wanted to sound like i kinda knew what i was talking about when i did. when you say that your employer pays you the full amount, does that mean full amount of your salary or your disability?

ugh i don't know why this is so confusing to me!!

Re: Question about Short Term Disability

The $170 per week is the amount the state pays. Anything above that is a supplemental insurance that either you or your employer pay for that will either pay the balance of your salary or some portion of it.

Sounds like your job might not have that insurance. HR would know.

they pay me whatever my usual pay is. I wonder if different places do it differently?

I find it all so confusing as well, to be honest. Chat Icon

Different places do it differently. My company has supplemental STD that they provide free of charge, so I get full pay while out. Not all companies do this.

Re: Question about Short Term Disability

NYS disability is $170 a week. Thats standard.

Supplimental STD from your job would usually pay a % of your salary. Our STD caps at $400/week. I pay into STD weekly because we couldn't survive on $170/week alone.

Our maternity leave is 12 weeks and it's all unpaid from my employer.

Re: Question about Short Term Disability

When I was on STD from my employer, I get $350 every week and $700max for biweekly. I know that some insurance company other than the one you have at the job, you would have to be with them a year before they approve you for any types of disability.
