Short Term Disability Question
So I am trying to keep all my ducks in a row in an effort to make sure that I have taken care of everything.
I am currently on DH's insurance, which is MUCH better than mine. I didn't cancel mine because he was looking for a new job, and being pregnant I didn't want to not have any coverage.
He's not getting a new job, and will be where he is now. I can cancel my insurance, save that money I am spending a week, and if we lose his insurance I can always get mine back.
If I do cancel my insurance, am I still eligble for NYS short term disability?
Is this something you can get from your job only if you have insurance?
How and when do I start applying for it?
Sorry for all the questions, i just don't want to screw us, and if we can save some more money it would help us in the long run!!!

Re: Short Term Disability Question
Yes, you can still get short term disability even if on your husbands insurance. I will be and I know my friend who works with me did as well, and she is on her husbands insurance too.

Re: Short Term Disability Question
I am under my husband's insurance and I am still getting STD. My company even pays 66% of my salary. It has nothing to do with their insurance. HTH

Re: Short Term Disability Question
Yes disability is completely separate than health insurance. You might not be able to cancel your health insurance unless it is the open enrollment period. Many times you can only drop or be added to the health insurance if there is a life changing event - new job; baby; etc. or during the enrollment period. Check with your hr dept

Re: Short Term Disability Question
i am on short term disability, its reguardless of my insurance. You can apply thru you HR, there is a form to fill out, and they will tell you what carrier they use, and u can call and start to set it up. B/f you cancel your insurance i have a question do you use your insurance for the pregnancy? if you do, even though you are on your DH insurance i would double check witht them that you can use it half way thru your pregnancny. B/c they might not, pregnancy is considered a pre existing condition. So just make sure so you know your covered. and taxes do get taken out of your disability.
