Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Is there anyone else out there whose DC gets constipated frequently?
Some days I just cant take it. I feel terrible for my DD when this happens.
I dont want to resort to meds but it seems not much else is helping.
Anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

My DD is....she's only 3 months old though
what has helped though, is slightly diluting her bottles...on a regular basis
If that doesn't work, other things have helped DD like some prune juice in her bottle, using the rectal thermometer
when all else fails, the glycerin suppositories (adult ones cut in half)
ETA: also, when I see her trying, clenching etc....I lay her down, push her legs up, like knees into her belly....and it usually gets her going....

Prunes are the obvious answer.
A couple ounces of water a day seems to keep things moving too.
And just in my experience, pears tend to do the trick too!

Yes....
We STRUGGLE with pooping. She gets prune juice regularly and still gets backed up.
Interesting enough I made a veggie soup with Quinoa in it yesterday (very high in fiber) and she gobbled it up and HOLY MOLY the poop that came out 12 hours later..... SHe TOTALLY cleared out.
Quinoa is SUPER healthy so we are going to incorporate it once a day into her diet to help
Try it out

ITA with the above. Also, prune juice was always too much for ds. We would put a few ounces of pear juice in his formula/milk each day and that always did the trick.
how old is your dd?

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
I went through this briefly with DD but I resolved the issue when I switched her formula. She was on soy and it was REALLY bad.. she'd scream every time. Once I switched her to Alimentum there was a DRAMATIC change. I still laugh when I think about that first diaper that DH was lucky enough to change... he had poop in his hair.
Maybe that's the problem?

Pear juice was always amazing !! The only place I could find it though was in Waldbaums in the babyfood section ( Gerber juice)

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Just went to the ped for my 2 year old and he said that 1 1/2 ounces of prune juice a day is good to keep him regular.
Also I lessened the milk take he usually gets throughout the day. He only gets milk right before bed time. In the morning he will get diluted apple juice or orange juice. I was told to watch dairy intake. My son LOVES cheese, bananas and yogurt...

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
DS was about 12-15 mos old - at a regular visit. I was talking to the doc about his "code browns". He was having "pellet poops" (hard turds that would leave a dent in his butt they were so hard).
Doc said 1 tablespoon of Benefiber 1x per day. Its tasteless - we put it in his last cup/bottle of the night. The next day he's got nice "code browns" again.
DS eats a lot of fruit but he also drinks a lot of milk/eats cheese.
We called the doc and a nurse said brown sugar water - the doc said that was an old wives tale.

Pears or prunes, whichever you litte one likes better. DS has one or the other every single day...keeps him regular.

Yup that's the only place i can find it too!
ETA: to the OP, pear juice and pear nectar are not the same. Use pear Juice only!

OMG...does she get prunes? I can give the kid 2.5 oz, one whole Gerber container a day and it does NOTHING. I give water, prune juice, pear juice, etc. Nothing most days.
I give Yogurt. I have stopped giving cereals and for the last few days I havent given any carbs barely, nothing starchy, no pancakes, waffles, pasta etc.
My poor baby pushes so hard she bled on 3 occasions, ALOT of blood. Took her to the dr, she got anal fissues from pushing so hard.
Sometimes (this has always been the case) she won't go for 3 or 4 days, then go and it's about 12 inches long, no joke. So painful. Very upsetting.
Dr said to try little tummies, see my other ?. After that we would have to try Miralax but I rather not give that....esp since she gets constipated so often.
I cant take this.

How old is DD? my nephew went through this recently. Like your daughter, nothing seemed to work for him either. He had to get a prescription called in to the pharmacy. His constipation would get so bad that he couldn't sleep, he'd throw up from it, etc.

11 mths old, 24 lbs. My poor baby struggles so hard to go sometimes. I think it hurts so bad she keeps her legs closed now...which adds to the pain and pressure, which adds to the forcing and then anal fissues/bleeding.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Have you tried prune puree, I literally gave it to DD when she was constipated and she exploded Also, I sometimes use the thermometer to help her out...She's not constipated often thankfully so I don't have to do it often...
ETA just saw the prunes you've tried.... Are you giving her juice or water to drink, I think that helps DD a lot with making her go regularly to be honest...I guess it loosens things up for her

Prunes were the only thing that worked when my DD was a baby.. either the juice or stage 1 fruit.

How about probiotics? FM Blissful-I know she uses them. Poor baby Also do a good search fpr baby massage for constipation. I found some stuff when my kids were little I used to do. A chiropracter maybe?

I dont like to s hove anything up there, plus she will barely let me get near there these days. I am afraid of her flinching and me hurting her butt.
Prune puree, yes, she could eat it everyday and NADA. She had baby prune puree and puree pears today and no luck yet. Also had prune juice too, this kid backs up so badly.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Pears and Prunes
AJ still gets a serving of pureed pears every single day.
I avoid the BART (Bananas, Apples, Rice, Toast) Only apples she gets is in the apple/prune juice
AJ's poops were so bad the screaming and we'd hold her knees up to help push it out and you'd see blood and like tiny hemirrods things as she pushed it out of her. It was so sad.
She's been a lot better with the pears and purnes diet.
On top of the puree everyday she gets a sippy cup of pear juice too, we alternate with white grape as well.
Good Luck

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Not sure if this would help but we feed Eliza LOTS of fruits on days she's "backed up". We give her cubed apples, pears, grapes, blueberries. Without fail this always seems to work. Along with apple juice in her water.
I'd stay away from the high iron foods like the baby cereals.
