Pears and Prunes
AJ still gets a serving of pureed pears every single day.
I avoid the BART (Bananas, Apples, Rice, Toast) Only apples she gets is in the apple/prune juice
AJ's poops were so bad the screaming and we'd hold her knees up to help push it out and you'd see blood and like tiny hemirrods things as she pushed it out of her. It was so sad.
She's been a lot better with the pears and purnes diet.
On top of the puree everyday she gets a sippy cup of pear juice too, we alternate with white grape as well.
Good Luck
Ok so tell me again what you do again each day? break it down for me...
I had been cutting the juice with water, maybe I should just give straight juice? I didnt want to give her juice, thats what kills me but I have no choice I guess.
I will give straight prune juice around 100, see what happens.
I feel like I cant feed her anything she loves. Cheese, breads, pasta, etc...all binding, I am at a loss right now what to give her.
Yes, we lay her down when she tries to go. She pushes and pushes her legs out and straight, we have to wiggle them loose to push them back and finally the poops can come out. Then we get what we call a 12 inch "Snake" come shooting out. It breaks my heart. And the blood...so much blood...no hemmorhoids that we can see just yet. Dr and us just see the anal fissures from the forcing. Our lives revolve around her poop, it breaks my heart to see her so uncomfortable. Not that i would want to see your DD suffer this way, but at least I know I am not alone.

Not sure if this would help but we feed Eliza LOTS of fruits on days she's "backed up". We give her cubed apples, pears, grapes, blueberries. Without fail this always seems to work. Along with apple juice in her water.
I'd stay away from the high iron foods like the baby cereals.
I do. I havent given baby cereal in weeks. I do give cheerios but they have oat bran in them, and fiber, so that cant be bad or can it?
And what about the iron in the vitamins? Do you think that can add to the constipation? I am hoping once she goes off formula (next mth) she will become a different child. I she does b/c this is terrible for her to go through just to poop. I guess I feel bad just giving fruit on those days b/c it so often, I worry she will just want to eat sweet things!

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
DS went through severe constipation issues from 6 months to around 15 months. We tried everything that everybody suggests above. After months, the dr had us give ONLY prunes for breakfast and lunch and let him eat some normal things for dinner. (Just from eating rice cereal for a week or two, he was constipated for months. We quickly gave it up once we realized he was in trouble.)
We also bicycled his legs everyday for a total of 30 minutes. (5 minutes here and there.) Also, if you rub her belly gently from the left hip, in a semi-circle over the belly and down to the right hip, it aids in digestion.
We did have to give a half suppository every once in a while.
I do have to tell you that his constipation began easing after a few months, but once we began whole milk, it got bad again.

OMG. I thought it might get better. I better brace myself. Thanks for the warning. I feel badly for your DS, I see what my baby goes through.

So true!
Well she's been 'good' for a few months now. I will agree that moving to whole milk made it worse for awhile but she leveled off after a month or so.
I used 100% pure prune juice. We were worried because this all started before she was year old of course and thought the juice straight was bad but man nothing is worse than those screams. We got too desperate.
We started small, 1-2oz but to really get things moving we went drastic.
Morning (before daycare) 2-4oz prune juice (or as much of it as she'd eat).
Daycare knew to keep away bananas, apples, rice and toasted breads.
She'd get a serving of oatmeal mixed with formula and a serving of pears.
Pears again in the afternoon.
Come home at 6pm and give her 2-4oz more of prune juice before her bottle.
Little tummies to help with the gas
Massages to the belly
Usually about 2days into this cycle if she was really stuffed up she'd BM a blow out and I was ALWAYS ok with blow outs. Hell blow outs are HEAVEN SENT!
When i'd cut her prune juice intake in half. If she stayed loose I'd cut it in half again. Id stop cutting it in half when the BMs were loose but not runny. She kept drinking prune juice twice a day until it was down to once a day. Then that slowly came off too. We still keep prune/apple juice in our cabinet.
She still gets pears every day
She still gets little tummies/myclion
She still gets tummy massages
She still gets stuffed up from time to time. We always hope for BMs. Oddly she gets them twice a day at daycare but there are days she'll go without any at all and at home she'll go a weekend without any or only one.
Good Luck
ETA: im not sure she was as bad off as your DD tho.

We cut out apples when ds was constipated but you might want to try the Miralax. Just a small amt when I see ds hasn't gone in a few days & it greatly relieves the pressure.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
My DD is going thru this now and she is only 4.5 months. The dr said 4 oz a day of Pear juice. So far it does seem to work even though she only goes every 2-3 days. But at least she isn't crying in pain anymore. Also warm bath help to relax them. Let your child soak in warm water.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
YES unfortunately BOTH my DC have constipation issues.
We tried everything - avoiding binding food, eating or drinking: prunes, pears, pear nectar, fiber bars, raisins, water, bicycling, massaging, rectal thermometer to stimulate, etc. I don't think there's a trick out there we didn't try. My DS's poops were so hard that I had get it out for him (awful awful awful) on SEVERAL occassions. He was ALWAYS constipated, not just once in awhile.
My DD didn't really have issues until she was 13 months (she's now 32 months.) She was put on Mirolax 1x a day every day. It's safe and works. When I try to wean her, she binds up. So she's not ready yet.
My DS started much younger. Diluted prune juice & pear nectar worked for awhile but he started rejecting it and would get constipated pretty fast. So we went to the GI and since he was under 1 they put him on lactulose. We switched him to Mirolax at about 13 months since I had a hard time regulating the amount of lactulose (he was either too watery or too hard - I couldn't find the perfect amount!) He does great on Mirolax. He's finally "normal" The ped and GI assure me Mirolax is safe and they can take it for years if they have to. I hate giving them something, but honestly nothing is worse than the screaming when constipated.

Karo syrup! It was a lifesaver for us. My mom gave it to me when I was a baby and Athan's ped actually recommended it for him too! Less than a teaspoon. HOPE IT HELPS!!!!

Is there anyone else out there whose DC gets constipated frequently?
Some days I just cant take it. I feel terrible for my DD when this happens.
I dont want to resort to meds but it seems not much else is helping.
Anyone have any words of wisdom for me?
Are you giving prunes? How much cereal is she getting?
OMG...does she get prunes? I can give the kid 2.5 oz, one whole Gerber container a day and it does NOTHING. I give water, prune juice, pear juice, etc. Nothing most days.
I give Yogurt. I have stopped giving cereals and for the last few days I havent given any carbs barely, nothing starchy, no pancakes, waffles, pasta etc.
My poor baby pushes so hard she bled on 3 occasions, ALOT of blood. Took her to the dr, she got anal fissues from pushing so hard.
Sometimes (this has always been the case) she won't go for 3 or 4 days, then go and it's about 12 inches long, no joke. So painful. Very upsetting.
Dr said to try little tummies, see my other ?. After that we would have to try Miralax but I rather not give that....esp since she gets constipated so often.
I cant take this.
ALexa is the same way... I can give her 5 ozs of prunes and NOTHING.....
The Quinoa really worked...... ANd its so healthy!

Thank you for this. I will use the Miralax if I have to, and I am glad to hear they can stay on it, b/c the bottle says no more than 7 days...
Spoke with the ped. We started with little tummies laxative last night. Luckily this am, she had some difficulty but managed to go ALOT, much of it came out. So I dont know if it was the little tummies or just all the foods I gave her yesterday but I am going to give the little tummies everyday for a while (ped said to do this). Ped also agreed they can use these products longer if need be.
So thank you for sharing your story. I am sorry your DC have such issues too. It's awfult to watch.
Thank you everyone.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
Sasha has been getting regularly constipated over the last month or two.. she used to be a champion pooper, but I don't know what happened. she pushes so hard sometimes, she throws up.
When it became obvious that it was a major issue-- I called the Ped. She has prunes EVERY morning for breakfast. I also give her 2 to 3 tablespoons of prune juice mixed with BM every day. I started with 1, but I had to up it because she still was pushing hard in the AM. Forgot to add-- that before we started the Prune regimen, I gave her a glycerin suppository to clear out all the hard poop.
It's better now, but I hate that I HAVE to give her prune juice to move things along. I try to give her fruits and veggies that are high in fiber, and I am also making my own food now-- so, I feel like the nutritional value of the food is a bit better since I am steaming fresh veggies.

Re: Severe constipation issues, anyone else go through this?
DS was, but it actually went away once he started solid foods. So for him, I think it was a reaction to formula. The last few days I've had the opposite problem.
I would avoid bananas, rice, toast, applesauce. Give plums, prunes, pears, carrots, and lots of water. Some additional juice couldn't hurt either.
If it really goes on too long, you can try the thermometer trick, but I never found itworked for DS.
I would also get her moving as much as possible. It can't hurt--my OB told me to do this when I had similar issues while pregnant.
