Random acts of kindness
My post about DH's phone being returned made me think of posting this thread.
Name one random act of kindness you have done for a stranger and/or has been done for you. We hear so many horrible stories on the news and on here, I thought it would be nice to show that there are still good people who go out of their way to help others.
I'll name one I did about two months ago. I was in the bathroom at a department store in the mall, there was no one else there and I noticed a cell phone on the floor. Picked it up, looked through the phone book, found a number labeled home, called it and got the woman's husband. She had just come home and was upset she lost it. I was leaving the mall and not going to be there by the time they got there, so I left it with mall security.

found a lost little boy (2 yrs old) in the mall...brought him to security and stayed with him til they located his mother.

When we were flying back from Aruba I went to the back to wait on line to use the bathroom. A mom was with her 2 year old talking to the flight attendants asking them if there's anything for her daughter b/c her ears were in pain. They offered her water, but the little girl didn't want so I asked if she wanted my organic mash-ups I brought for my son. She was thankful and the little girl took some flavors and smiled. 
Last week I was holding DS and my bag and looking for a cart at Trader Joe's (there seemed to be a lack of them). A man out of no where went on a hunt for me and found a cart and he also had to shop, but gave me the last one b/c he saw I was holding DS.

I was parked and waiting to pick up DH from work. I saw 2 kids on their bikes and all of a sudden the chain comes off the bike of the one kids bike. The other kid kept going and never came back.  (The one kid was screaming for him to come back).
He was tyring to so hard to get the chain back on but couldn't figure it out. When DH came out from work, we both helped him with the chain and he thanked us very much.
The kids were probably around 12-13.

Right after all the pay it forward stuff, and before I had EZPass, I paid the person's toll behind me on the Goethals.
A couple of weeks ago, one of my bff and her dh were celebrating their 3rd anniversary. His parents had given them $200 so they were having a really nice meal, drinks, apps dessert the whole shebang. Anyway, when they got the bill the waitress said it had already been paid. They thought maybe his parents or hers had called the restaurant, but the waitress said no it was paid by someone in the restaurant. They saw the bill and a note was included that simply said Pay it Forward. I thought that was pretty cool!

If I'm out walking and I happen to notice someone's parking meter has less than 5 minutes left I'll usually pop a quarter in to buy them some time. I like doing that, but I'm not sure whether I'm being "kind" to the driver or giving an "F.U." to Bloomberg

I wave people in when driving all the time.
But when they dont wave back to say thanks I get really ****** and then wish i never let them go ahead of me in the first place

Here's mine:
During the big blackout in August 2003, my DH (then BF) was working in Westbury and because we only had one car, I would drive/pick him up from work. When I saw that no one had power, I got in the car and started driving to go get him bc I knew he wouldn't be able to call me (cell phone service was crazy that day!). The SSP & Meadowbrook was a parking lot and by the time I got off on Old Country Road, my car was starting to overheat.
As soon as I turned onto Old Country, sure enough, my car overheated and started smoking, right in the middle lane....I had no phone, no money, and no way of getting help.
One man on a bike was nice enough to come over and help me push it to the side of the road. Another driver saw us pushing the car and waved down a tow truck that happened to be parked in a shopping center nearby (I didn't know the driver did this as she never stopped, but the tow truck driver told me), and the tow truck driver towed me to the nearest gas station. I had told him I didn't have my wallet on me and to give me his card/info so I could mail him a check, but he ended up just driving away while I was on the pay phone trying to call DH.
Years later I am still so touched by the kindness these three total strangers bestowed on me....they saved me from a potential nightmarish situation. I always think of them and try to do my best to do nice for others, even when they don't ask/expect it.

I jumped out of my car once to help an elderly woman cross the street.
When DH was in the hospital for surgery his roomate was an elderly gentleman who I think had dementia. He enjoyed watching TV. Well the people who collect the $ for the tv came around and he couldnt pay the fee to keep the tv on so they were going to turn it off. So DH and I paid for him to keep it on.
And I LOVE this story about a random act of kindness by my mom LINK

shortly after we moved to PA, DH and i were commuting to NYC together via NJ transit. One nite he got stuck in a meeting, missed our usualy train, so I had to take our local regional rail connection home (we would drive home from NJ Transit lot in Trenton). B/c DH was late, I had no car..i walked home along rt.13 (about a 15 min walk).
DH came home a little while later and threw a wallet on the table that he had found on his train. a little black wallet with train passes in it. Luckily there was an iD card and biz card of an associate in there so i wound up dialing through the directory to find this person; left a message that we had her wallet. THe next morning she returned our call relieved that it was found. I messengered it to her from my office in nY. Those train passes are MUCHO DENARO. i would be ****** if i lost it for the month.
She later sent me a $50 visa gift card for returning it to her

There is a sorta homelss man who sorta works on my block as a garage flag guy (guys who wave a flag to get you to park).
So I buy him some coff every once in a while from the local diner. They know him so I just leave a dollar a few times a week so he does not have to pay.
The few bucks a month mean NOTHING to me. To him, it means everything.
I also did something yesterday. A firned has a downs baby. She has 2 other little ones. Not lot of money. Struggling. She posted on FB about how it would be so amazing to have a video monitor so she does not worry about the downs baby sleeping, not breathing, cant see her etc.
I sent her one overnight. I dont care about the recognition. Sometimes people just need some help. This monitor, truly, will change her quality of life. She will be able to do housework and do things and always be able to see the baby.
I know SHE will pay it forward. Even if its making cookies for a neigbor, or something.

i have a bunch:
during the blackout, DH and i got stuck in the city overnight. We stayed at a friends apt and since it was so hot (and there was no a/c) we were up super early. i looked outside and there was a car service car there - i asked him where he was going and he said Long Island so i asked if it would be possible for us to get a ride out there with whomever he was driving. The passenger came out and said it was no problem, so we were able to finally get back to LI. We pulled up at my house and both DH and I realized we had only about $10 cash on us (and the atms obviously werent' working) - the driver said no problem, glad to have helped and let us out without paying anything.
I've found many wallets, phones etc on the train or on the sidewalk and always made an effort to get them back to the owners. Calling numbers on the phone or on cards in the wallet to track down the owner - usually meeting up somewhere to give them their goods back.
i figure its the least i can do since i'd want someone to do the same if i lost my wallet.
I found a little lost boy wandering in the mall once and took him to security and stayed with him until his mother was found (she was frantically searching for him)

A couple years ago I was leaving a movie theater one night to drive home & saw a woman trying (unsuccessfully) to push her car with two little kids in the back seat. I pulled over to see if she was OK - the car had broken down, someone had tried to jump it for her, but it didn't work, so they just left - so I helped her flag down some guys to push it to a parking spot on the side where she could come back and get it towed to the garage the next day, and I gave her and the children a ride home.

Lots of little things.
When I get a really good spot at the mall and I see people doing the slow crawl looking for a spot, I wave to them and point at my car so they know to follow me.
I found an elderly dog in the middle of the road, put it gently in my car and brought it home. The poor thing had bad hips and was in a lot of pain so he wasn't able to get across the street fast.
When my neighbors walk by while I'm gardening and tell me they like my flowers, I cut some for them.
My elderly neighbor across the street had to call an ambulance for her husband but didn't want to leave him so DH waited for the ambulance. The next day she came over with two pints of ice cream to thank us.
I really like the parking meter idea. I have to try that.
I bring personal items into work like an extra set of silverware, spare shopping bags, etc. I look for office supplies that I think people will like or find useful, or might brighten their day a little bit. Like colored file folders instead of manilla ones. Post it notes in their favorite colors.
Above all, I tend not to draw that attention back on to myself because it's about helping others, not me.

I just make a conscious effort to do little things all the time: holding doors for people, always letting someone merge in front of me in heavy traffic, etc.
In fact, I think it's started to rub off on my children. This past weekend, my 5-year old DS, went over to his great grandmother, took her hand and helped her down the stairs . I melted.

Quite a few times I have been at the super markeket and have seen people try to park in a spot where there were carts ,and I usually move them so the person doesn't have to get out .
I helped a woman once , her minivan stalled in an entry way to my store( off a major road) , so me and another guy pushed her minivan up a hill and to the side .
I always try to go out of my way and help people . It makes me feel good about who I am

I let someone cut in front of me at the drive-thru at Dunkin Donuts. The guy was making a left turn into the drive-thru, blocking traffic, causing all sorts of problems. I let him in and was cursing him under my breath. I get to the window to pay and the cashier says "It was taken care of by the car ahead of you"! It was so nice.

There's a lady that lives on our block that goes up and down all day in her power wheelchair.
One day it died in the middle of Merrick Rd. She was trying to push it herself and she can barely walk (I believe she told DH she had broken her back in a car accident). Anyways..........
DH saw her and stopped to help. He was able to lift her up into his truck.
He then pushed the heavy chair halfway down our road and a couple neighbors came and helped him lift it up into his truck to bring it to her house.
She left him a thank you card a few days later.
A couple weeks ago someone's boat fell off the trailer in the street in front of our house. DH went out there right away to help as other people got impatient and just flew past in their cars.

In Philly this past weekend, DH and I paid for 3 hours parking but only used 15 minutes. We gave the ticket to the person waiting for our spot when we pulled out.
