Pronunciation Pet Peeve
I'm not sure why this bothers me- but it's like nails on a chalk board to me. I have heard several people recently pronounce Leg like this:
"Lay-ge" (i think that is how the pronunciation would be spelled)
"I hurt my lay-ge"
"The lay-ge on that table is unstable and wobbly."
It drives me nuts... I'm not sure why. I want to scream at them- it's LEG... not Lay-ge! How can you mispronounce a 3 letter word??
I apologize in advance if any of you say it this way... It just irritates me...
Maybe it's because I'm stuck at work with nothing to do on Christmas Eve?

CHEWsday continues to be in my top 3 mispronounced word. And extra fire and brimstone to anyone who uses the even MORE obnoxious: Chewsdee.

Re: Pronunciation Pet Peeve
I know someone on LIF who says lay-guh and aye-guh. I won't out her though.
Someone from work pronounces Sagtikos as Saj-ikose. I said, every time you say it, I think you're going to say "vaj". As in vaj-ina.
She now concentrates on saying Sag-tikos.

David Letterman says thee instead of the. He had a little child on the show about 10 years ago, who pointed that out. It was hilarious, but true. I wish I could remember who the kid was. Letterman has not stopped!

Actually there is a pronunciation rule for thee and the, but i don't think Americans follow it. Thee should be said before word beginning with a vowel sound. I don't think it makes a difference, really.
To the OP, if you hate the way leg is sometimes pronounced, never come to Australia! That 'a' sound is everywhere here!

Re: Pronunciation Pet Peeve
There is a lot of reasons people may mispronounce words. Its never on purpose (except in rare incidences...for example I have a client who has a developmental disability, he grew up on Long Island but loves western movies, so he speaks like a cowboy on purpose ;o) ) In some cases speech cannot be fixed no matter how hard a person tries. Other times the pronunciation can be changed with lots of practice. It could also be caused by hearing problems. I think its interesting that someone would find it irritating. Its just an accent or a speech difficulty. My friends usually tease me - usually lovingly. I did not speak until I was 4 so I think its a miracle that I say "Ayg." JMO.
