Re: Pronunciation Pet Peeve

When I was younger, I used to say Layge and Ayge instead of Leg and Egg to annoy my best friend. It worked like a charm every time!!!
And I think saying ORange is fun!
And RAYdiator instead of RAAAAdiator.

I hate hate hate Liberry. Kills me. My dad told me it was a curse when I was little, so I find it offensive. Chat Icon

David Letterman says thee instead of the. He had a little child on the show about 10 years ago, who pointed that out. It was hilarious, but true. I wish I could remember who the kid was. Letterman has not stopped!

Actually there is a pronunciation rule for thee and the, but i don't think Americans follow it. Thee should be said before word beginning with a vowel sound. I don't think it makes a difference, really.

To the OP, if you hate the way leg is sometimes pronounced, never come to Australia! That 'a' sound is everywhere here!

That makes sense because it is hard to say "thuh," and then go into a vowel sound. There's sort of an awkward pause, whereas "thee," can flow nicely into a vowel sound. I'm pretty sure that Letterman always says thee, though. I wonder what my college linguistics professor would say about this. I did find that class to be fascinating.

It can also be used for emphasis. Maybe, because of his job, he truly is an emphatic speaker.

CHEWsday continues to be in my top 3 mispronounced word. And extra fire and brimstone to anyone who uses the even MORE obnoxious:
Chewsdee.

What is the real word? This one is a puzzle to me-what do these people think they are saying when they say this????

I think it is supposed to be Tuesday

Really???? People really say it like that? That is so weird!

Some of my English and Irish cousins say chewsday, chewna fish, schewpid (stupid) etc.

Ok I know I am dating myself by saying this but it used to irritate the hell out of me when people used to pronounce President Reagan's name as:

REE-gan
instead of
RAY-gan

Shoot I didn't like the guy but he was the president - get his name right.

My dad says Lay-ge and Ay-ge. We tease him and say it's the Brooklyn still in him.
He also says the Jy-nts instead of Giants and Museem instead of Museum and bunk your head instead of bump your head.

I love him, though. And we tease him because he can take the joking.Chat Icon

OMG.. Valentime's day! I hate that! It's ValentiNe's Day people!

And of course Sopposebly instead of Supposedly. (can't believe no one said that one yet)

And the most annoying to me.. Pete Sakes instead of Pete's Sake... same goes for God Sakes instead of God's Sake... Victoria Secrets instead of Victoria's Secret.

Someone I was friends with in H.S. used to pluralize EVERYTHING. It annoyed the living crap out of me, but I never had the heart to tell her.

I will never forget the surveys she used to fill out, where she always said that her favorite movie was "Legends of the Falls" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Good Luck on that one! NYers turn the 't' sound to 'd' in certain words.

hmm. My mouth makes a slightly different shape at the end of each word. I try to make a conscious effort to put an "r" sound at the end of drawer. (drawR) --Draw has the "awe" sound at the end.

I was guilty in my teens of saying 'scithers' instead of 'scissors'

Yup - that is how I say it too. To me "drawer" kind of rhymes with "door" but "draw" kind of rhymes with "awe" KWIM

Yes, I know what you mean. What you are describing is the technically the same sound according to the IPA (International Phonemic Alphabet). NYers just have two different sounds to this sounds- 'or' and 'aw'. This site has a great link to all the different sounds (if you are interested in that sort of thing, like I am):

IPA

If you look under call and four, you can see what I mean. The extra 'r' sound is done in American speech.

My point is, there is nothing wrong with saying 'drawer' as 'draw'. People may pronounce it differently depending on the region they are from. This varies within different regions in NY. Chat Icon

Gotta love those guttural /t/ s!

The British accents are really interesting. This is a good website that you can listen to how it is different all over the UK.

I love this site with accents all over the world:
