Re: Preferred house type

I grew up in a ranch and always wanted to say, "I'm going up to bed."

We just bought a cape and 4 of the 5 BR's are upstairs. I like that a lot!

Re: Preferred house type

Definitely a colonial.

We have a cape right now which is charming but we lose too much space in our upper bedrooms due to the ceilings. We plan on converting our cape to a colonial down the line.

Re: Preferred house type

I have an older colonial now. I am dreaming of a nice sprawling ranch. I want to feel like I am on the Golden Girls, hanging out on the lanai.

Re: Preferred house type

While I do like the colonial, i love our house which is a splanch. You get the benefits of many different styles of a home in 1.

All our bedrooms are on the top level along with a main bathroom...Then the living room is on its own level with only 3 steps going down to the main floor. The main floor is very open & contains, dining room, kitchen, den, .5 bath & laundry area. Then we have a 1/2 basement off of that.

Colonials, tudors, victorians...I like old houses.

Totally my taste but not what I own. We own a farm ranch but expanded it into a colonial.

Re: Preferred house type

We had a cape but changed it to a colonial, i really like having the 4 bedrooms and laundry room on the 2nd floor. and the living/kitchen/dining space on the 1st floor.

Re: Preferred house type

I only wanted a colonial, but opened myself up to look at most styles. I found and fell in love with a Ranch, I love the tall open ceilings, we also have a loft so it has a bit of a second story feel. Also with a small child, the Ranch has been perfect, no running up and down stairs all the time.

I didn't vote b/c my choice isn't on there- Craftsman!

We bought a cape and I really like it (I grew up in a cape) but my forever house will be a Craftsman style home.

What does a Craftsman style home look like? This is the first I've ever heard of that style and now I'm curious.Chat Icon

We are both pack rats and need TONS of space, with a colonial we have that.

We live in Wantagh, but splanchs are common in areas like S. Seaford, Merrick, Bellmore

There are some pictures in my album, but it really doesn't show the "flow"

Re: Preferred house type

I like colonials and Victorians, but that's not what we bought. We have a ranch, which I thought would be great with young children. No running up flights of stairs, and no worries about children falling down...

Re: Preferred house type

I grew up in a cape and I liked it very much. DH grew up in a ranch and hated it. So, when it came time to purchase a home, we ended up buying a high ranch.

We will never buy a high ranch again - too many stairs!!! We would prefer a colonial or a big ranch. I wouldn't mind a cape, but DH isn't so into them.
