Preferred house type
As DH and I peruse MLS we are thinking about house types.
if you could do it all over again, or are buying for the first time, what house type do you want?

Re: Preferred house type
ive always loved capes and that is what we end up buying.
I have heard that capes are great because there is so much you can do with them and to modify.

Re: Preferred house type
i always preferred the layout and style of a colonial because i like the idea of all of the bedrooms on the same floor as opposed to capes. but theyre also bigger which means more to heat/cool. so with that, we try to stick with expanded ranches as its more energy efficient (if you have more than 1 heating zone) and it gives us the space we need.

Re: Preferred house type
We prefer colonials, although we will also look at split levels and capes. I grew up in a Levittown ranch, which has caused me to dislike slanted ceilings.

I tend to be drawn to ranches mostly. Next would be colonials.

Re: Preferred house type
i voted colonial bc i always loved them......
that said i always hated a cape and was a real PITA when my husband made me look at capes anyway......
but we ended up in an expanded cape and i LOVE it
so keep your options open and dont judge by the classification of a house, judge what you see when you actually step into a house...
good luck!!!!!

Re: Preferred house type
We wanted a colonial or a cape but are ending up buying a ranch/rambler. Don't limit yourself to one kind of house.

Re: Preferred house type
i prefer colonials, but we ended up with an expanded ranch and i love it! with young kids i think it will be great having everyone on one floor.
we can always turn it into a colonial down the road

Re: Preferred house type
i am not limiting myself to anything, i was really looking for pros and cons to all house types... to NOT limit ourselves, to see potential on the "pros"
I guess i really could've named this poll "what kind of house do you have that you hate?"

Re: Preferred house type
I didn't vote b/c my choice isn't on there- Craftsman!
We bought a cape and I really like it (I grew up in a cape) but my forever house will be a Craftsman style home.

Re: Preferred house type
I am surprised so many people chose colonials! I have one and hate it! I hate hate hate having stairs with a newborn (now 5.5 months).
If I could do it all over again I would get a large sprawling ranch with a walk out basement.
I also like High-ranches.
Ugh - I grew up in a ranch, and always loved the idea of the bedrooms upstairs. Well, now that I am CONSTANTLY running up and down them, and have nightmares of DS falling down them, I would trade my house for a ranch in a second!
Good luck with your search!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Preferred house type
We have a ranch and both agreed that our next home will also be a ranch - just bigger. I love having everything on one floor...especially my laundry room

Re: Preferred house type
I converted my house (I have no idea what style the "before" was.. ) to a traditional Colonial. I like the common areas downstairs, and the bedrooms and "private" area upstairs. The toy room and library are upstairs as well.
DW and I also love victorian houses, but brand-new ones, not an historic house.

Re: Preferred house type
We have a split. I like it because it keeps the bedrooms apart from the living spaces and I have a formal dining/living room. Its great for entertaining and I love having my laundry in a convienent space.
But, I grew up in a ranch and would love someday to have a HUGE and SPRAWLING ranch. My favorite was one that was L-shaped so that you still had bedrooms separate from the living space but you had one-floor living. And, although they had a basement, they had a mudroom on the same level with the laundry.
After that, definitely tudors and craftsman houses...just love that look!

Re: Preferred house type
We have a Hi-Ranch and it works for us right now. But I might feel differently when we have kids. Our Family Room will be downstairs, so there might be a lot of going up and down the stairs. But if I had to do it all over again, I would love a nice large Ranch.

Re: Preferred house type
We looked at everything when house hunting - but our preference was a colonial or a cape.
We ended up with a colonial.
