How do you know your supply is dwindling? Breastfeeding is a very effective, natural thing. If it is lessening it is because your daughter needs less. Your body makes what she is demanding, even if it feels otherwise. By 6 months, you can start her on purees and such, so I don't see why you would need to supplement with formula at all. (not that there is anything wrong with formula but I just don't see why you would start supplementing now since its been going so well). From what you are saying, it sounds like you have issues with your weight, or at least from how people treated you and are bringing your own issues into DD's life. I know you are scared she will face what you did but you have to remember she is her own person. Everyone loves to call babies fat! Saying chubba, chunky... people do it even to small babies. My daughter is super short so every ounce showed. She was below average for weight and yet we constantly got comments about how we were overfeeding her and what a "big" girl she was, even though by medical standards she was small. So I don't think it's personal to you or your weight. I think it's just how people like to talk about babies. The reason your DD is in 9-12 month clothing is because she is the size of an average 9-12 month old girl. You have to face that she is bigger than average so the doctor saying she is already there is just sort of a fact. But listen, like you said, she is healthy. It doesn't matter. You are making the fact that she is large matter. My doctor always preached this and based on my experience he is absolutely correct: Breastfed babies are naturally heavier in the first year of life. By the time EBF babies turn 1, they start to lean out and get less chubby. She'll be running around and probably losing weight soon. No baby needs to be on a diet and they need fat. Worry about her weight when she is older. Not now. But from what you said, it doesn't sound like your doctor is "fataphobic" as you call it. I think he just struck a chord with you that was really personal.

I disagree.

She just finished venting her concerns to him about not wanting her daughter too gain much weight and he cracks a joke about it and then proceeds to chuckle with the nurse tagging along?

To me that is unprofessional. A docotr IMO should be held to high bedside manners.

There is a lot that can be said about people who just run their mouths without thinking about others feelings.

I agree with this. Even if OP is a bit over sensitive when it comes to weight, her ped just finished listening to her worries. Why make a comment then? Rude.

Also, the "average" size hardly applies to every child. Average denotes that 50% of kids will be bigger than that and 50% will be smaller. OP, as long as your DD is growing along her own growth curve, you shouldn't worry. My DC has always been off the charts for height, so obviously they are also on the higher end of the weight chart.

Every kid will grow differently. Instilling good habits when they're young is the best way to go. You're doing a great job!

That is not a bigger baby. At that age my ds was drinking 8oz bottles every two to three hours. I fed on demand. Find another dr, hes an asshole. If a dr makes you second guess whats best for YOUR child, Its time to move on.

His joke was not funny Chat Icon doctors are very very conscious about kids weight these days. Also very pushy about giving kids the right food, so you'll find that anywhere you go.

I have twins and I just want to say I think all the hubbub about fat babies thin babies, growth curves etc is really ********. My boys were preemies and we had to BEG to take them home because Dr's were saying they would have jaundice, they weren't gaining enough etc. We actually got a baby scale and i got so freaked out I pumped because I was so nervous about starving them!

Well to this day, the boys are the same height, but one is a full 5 lbs less than the other, because that is natural for him!
ETA: I do not think you need to supplement either, unless she is not having wet diapers. Don't concentrate so much on ounces. I used more milk plus when I was pumping and had great results although I will warn you it tasted vile

Here is my chunky boy

And my "skinny" boy

And here they are at about 4, perfectky healthy and normal

Re: Pedaitrician rant! Sorry its so long!

If you are comfortable with him otherwise, I would speak up and let him know that his comments upset you and why .......Doctors are people - I don't get immediately switching a Dr. you're otherwise happy with b/c he said something you didn't like -

I COMPLETELY understand your concerns for your daughter, but maybe HE doesn't realize where you're coming from and how that comment would sting - not everyone is sensitive to weight - and in babies..........most people, and doctors aren't concerned with a baby being 'overweight' unless they are VERY VERY overweight ........the fact that he laughed and made a joke about her being chubby is probably something he sees and does 10x a day!

As far as him telling you not to pacify her w/ food - he was giving you his opinion. You don't have to take it (and you don't have to stay with his practice either) but from where he was standing, he gave her a shot, and you stuck a bottle in her mouth - it probably DID look like you were keeping her happy and pacifying her w/ the bottle . (not that I disagree w/ it - I actually did this with a forumla bottle w/ both of my boys)

I think you may be a bit hypersensitive to his comments b/c you are so concenred about her weight yourself.......

but you're never going to find a doctor who agrees with you 100% - you're never going to find a doctore you agree with 100% either.

I doubt chuckling about the baby being overweight at 4.5 months old would translate to him telling an 8 year old girl she was fat and laughing at her .........but that's me. You have to do what's best for you

I agree with this. And theres notjing wromg with calling babies chubba chunky or any other cutesy name. Thats what they call it- baby fat. Your not telling a 5 year old their fat stop eating.

I dont have any issue with my daughter being a bigger baby. I am not projecting anything on her, I asked a serious question that I was concerned about as any mother should be and I got a wise crack in return. My original post only stated my daughters size for a refrence point. The fact is that my Ped had made comments when I ask questions that are way off the base of what I was asking and made reference to my DD weight which I don't think is an issue. Again, the cutesy name thing is my own personal opinion.

Re: Pedaitrician rant! Sorry its so long!

You have to feel comfortable with ur ped and sounds like you're not anymore. So it doesn't matter if we think u are overreacting or not because at the end of the day, u no longer feel comfortable in his care. My daughter was 9 lb 1 oz when she was born and our first ped basically told us all this bull about feeding her every three hours (I was bfing on demand) and even water to tide her over (this as a newborn!). I didn't think he was very bfing friendly and could see right off the bat we would not see eye to eye in the future. Totally switched after our first visit and now I love our office and all the pedis (cept 1).

I do call my dd chunky monkey, roly poly etc because she was a scrumptiously chubby baby but definitely trying to phase it out now that she is almost two. You're right, kids do pick up things early and I remember comments about my weight from a very early age.

They are sooo cute! Thanks for sharing! the problem is I am not nursing throughout the day I work FT so I have to count ounces to sustain her while Im at work. I have been dropping in the amount I pump all day so thats why I am worried. I will look for the milk plus though. Thanks.

So up until last night I really liked my 4 1/2 Month old DD Ped. We went for her 4 month shots last night which I am spacing out and that was fine. Everything was great until I asked him a question about supplementing her with formula. She is EBF and my supply is starting to dwindle from going back to work. I pump every three hours, nurse at night and in the am, drink tons of water and eat lactation bars the whole nine. Its just dwindling. Anyway I asked him what formula would be the best since I know alot of formulas are filled with junk like high fructose corn syrup and GMOs. Both my self and my husband are bigger people so I am trying very hard not to have my daughter face the same battles in life I have being plus sized but at the same time she is genetically predisposed to being a bigger girl. She is currently 17.8 lbs and 27 inches. She is in size 9-12 months clothes. She is delicious and healthy as a lil horse! Well when I asked him about the formula and I said because I am concerned about her gaining unnecessary weight he chuckled and says "We are already there!" He and the nurse yuck it up and me and my DH just looked at each other. I could cry right now. I am so tired of fataphobic doctors. I ended up with a scheduled C-section because of them. He has told me in the past to space her out so she doesn't gain so fast and when she got her last shots I gave her a bottle of BM right after for the antibodies and he told me not to pacify my baby with food? Umm I wasn't! She is breastfed, she eats 4ounces every 2-3hrs but sleeps 9 hours straight at night since she is 3 months old. What am I supposed to do let her scream?? she take in 24-28oz a day which is right in the normal range. Why would he say that? I am trying to be concious and feed her the best way I can and I get a comment like that. IDK what to do. I think I need to find a new Ped. I dont want my daughter in the hands of someone who is going to make her weight an issue from the start. I don't even let people call her chunka, chubba or anything like that. Sorry this is so long, Im just super upset. Any recos for ped near Lindenhurst would be great! Thanks!Chat Icon

I also think you should find a new doc. Regardless of his intent it was obnoxious and you don't need to deal with it. You should be very comfortable speaking to someone in his position and if that is the response you get, how can you be?

I am with you in regards to the chubby, chunka, baby names. I just think it's unnecessary and I would correct people as well and say, no she's perfect and smile. I don't typically overreact to this type of thing but feel we must be so careful with how we speak to our children about weight.
My DD is 18 months and when my mom picked her up the other day she made a noise...like most of us do when we pick up something that's 25 pounds. And my DD said "heavy". Of course my mom told her she wasn't heavy and she isn't. But that is how easy it is for them to retain something and believe it.

Thank you for that. They pick up on it so young and I think if we train ourselves to speak kindly and expect that from the people who surround our children then it will be a more positive enviornment. My take is that if you won't say it to them when they are 2 why say it now. Especially our little girls who are taught so young about body image and whats "acceptable". I just dont want her to ever doubt how gorgeous she is, thin, heavy, whatever she grows into.

Switch. It doesn't matter WHAT your concern is, your pediatrician said something that made you uncomfortable. I am also struggling with a doctor who I find is not so knowledgeable on bf-ing. I'm also concerned that my son isn't gaining enough, among other concerns, and I am feeling brushed off. I am very strongly considering switching as well, and your post made me think I really should.

I'm sorry, but ITA with the above posters. I think you are being a little sensitive - my DD didn't weigh that much until 9-10 months (and plenty of people tell me that she is chubby!), and your DD is in the 90th percentile - she is on the bigger side. My SIL's ped told her to stop nursing my nephew at night when he turned 6 months bc he was gaining to much - it is possible for that to happen. I don't see anything wrong with your dr telling you if that is the case.

I also think you shouldn't supplement until you absolutely have to if you don't want to. Have you tried more milk plus? Once they start on solids you can also give more food during the day and nurse in the morning and at night.

Thats so unfair what your ped said to you...For the record my son at one point was eating 42oz in a 24 hour period and eating solids too....I think he was about 5.5m at the time.

And he is a thin, active, healthy 6 year old. You are doing fine with your daughter and if your ped makes you feel otherwise....time to search for a new one!

I couldn't disagree with this more, some women just don't have great supplies to begin with and when there are changes (like going back to work) they can't keep up. Reading things like this (" you're body will naturally keep up with baby")made me so sad when I was at the 6-7 mark and needed to supplement. OP, you're doing great!

I am a pumper. DD wouldn't and still won't latch. I have a pretty low supply and have to give her formula 1-3 times a day. I've done so much research on supplements to boost my supply. I have More Milk Plus which I got on Amazon. I have the pill form so while it doesn't taste too bad going down, the burps are not so pleasant lol. I also take Fenugreek supplements, drink Milkmaid tea, eat oatmeal made with Steel Cut Oats, etc. There are quite a few things that you can do to boost supply!

Also try to add a power pump session during the day. Pump for 20 mins, rest for 10, pump for 10, rest for 10, and then pump for another 10. From what I've read it works.

Good luck! And your ped sounds like an ass.

Fenugreek capsules worked for me when I noticed a dip in supply with my DD around 6 months when my AF returned. I took them for 2 weeks and noticed a difference. My supply stayed even after I stopped taking them.

I agree with this. And theres notjing wromg with calling babies chubba chunky or any other cutesy name. Thats what they call it- baby fat. Your not telling a 5 year old their fat stop eating.

I dont think you read my orginal post. I am not saying he told me to stop. I asked him a question and got a snarky comment about her weight and he and his nurse had a chuckle about it. Thats why Im upset. I know my daughter is a bigger baby and thats not my issue. My issue is with the PED making unsolicited comments about her size when I ask him unrelated question like what formula is best to feed that doesn't have things like high fructose corn syrup.

They are sooo cute! Thanks for sharing! the problem is I am not nursing throughout the day I work FT so I have to count ounces to sustain her while Im at work. I have been dropping in the amount I pump all day so thats why I am worried. I will look for the milk plus though. Thanks.

Thanks. I will try the Milk Plus and power pump. Up until last week I was pumping 4-6oz at session now its 2-3. No bueno!

Pedaitrician rant! Sorry its so long!

Don't know who your current ped is but my brother uses Dr. Soranno (I think that's the spelling) and I've also heard good things about Dr. Mathews. They are both in Lindenhurst.

If you stay where you are, I'd totally chastise the ped for those types of comments. They are unprofessional and unacceptable.
