sorry for the rant ..but people blow my mind
My dd is now two so this happened a while ago ( but the topic keeps coming up and it just gets to me )
My sil had her ds just three months before me i love that our kids are growing up so close we see each other almost every weekend at my inlaws house. When my dd was little and still on formula my mil made a comment and cause a heated little tiff...she knew i used similac powdered formula and still needed to make to comment that her daughter uses liquid only and shouldnt use powder because we are contaminating our daughter . Really!!!! I was still emotional being a new mommy and loosing my dad a month after having my daughter so i took alot of offense to what she said and made a rude comment back . My sil had her son in day care so i had nothing else and just threw it out there and said well i wash my hands before making every bottle its no diff then a baby crawlin around a floor at your house or in a daycare and putting their hands in their mouth. ( mommies who used daycare please dont take offense i felt like it was all i could say at the time she took me so off guard and just kept pushing the issue ) needless to say two years later or so..fast forward to fathers day and what topic is brought up again ????? my sil had another ds and i askd her what kind of formula she was using and mil jumped in ( of course ) and made the SAME STUPID COMMENT ...i held my belly as long as i could ...then was like listen u know i used powder with my dd and she wasnt sick a day in her life besides a lttle runny nose here and there if that ....my nephew was sick alot so seriously think about things before you just blurt things out all the time. She then turned to me and said yes true well i guess you are the one percent lol ...uughh

Re: sorry for the rant ..but people blow my mind
she sounds like ...forgive me, I know it's your MIL...an azzhole.
Does she think liquid formula is bottled by god himself? anytime your food goes through the manufacturing process...either liquid or powder...there is potential for contamination. Not that I'm a fan of the FDA...but there are criteria put in place to protect our kids...not perfect, not great...but there is criteria that needs to be met. If you really think about it our children come into contact with some form of "contamination" in EVERYTHING.
I was just reading an article last week about a family that didn't vaccinate bc they didn't believe in contaminating their child...well the child got a cut and got a tetanus infection and almost died! they had to put him in an induced coma bc of the pain
no matter how hard you try, they are coming into contact with toxins, contaminants, germs...whatever you want to call it. That's life! Of course some are worse than others and we do need to protect and advocate for our babies...but i see nothing wrong with powdered formula and i used it for my son when i couldn't BF...he's healthy, above average in height and his learning is above what's expected at his age. He talks more than most 2 year olds I've seen, has been sick less than many other toddlers I know of and seems to be thriving. She's out of line and needs to mind her own business. Her turn at parenting is over!

thats just plain ignorance on her part..really.
you're right..they would probably get more germs crawling on her floor or being at daycare (and my DS was and is still in a daycare but lets face it..with all those kids its germy) and would always have his hands in his mouth. i swear we went from 1yr-2yr old with constant ear infections and colds b/c his hands were always in his mouth.

Re: sorry for the rant ..but people blow my mind
I take all advise given to me by the older generation with a grain of salt. Maybe back in like 1950 they had issues with powder formula, and that is what she is basing it on If we listened to all the critisim given by the older generation, our newborns would be put to sleep on their bellies, we would give them whiskey for teething, would be sure to let them cry because holding them too much spoils them and put rice in their formula from Day 1 to get them to sleep through the night.
I do agree it is hurtful though. DD was colicky and I still have a grudge against my FIL, MIL and SIL for things they said back then (EX: SIL said after she visited she was second guessing having kids because Maddie cried so much, and FIL said the reason DD was colicky was I held her too much as a Newborn). Delightful as always

Honestly I wouldnt even defend myself to someone like that. Take it where its coming from. A place of ignorance! I have a rocky relationship with my mil because apparently my in laws (mother/father/grandmother) know everything and Im an idiot LOL I stopped defending myself a long time ago and just state when shes being rude to me. or not taking directions properly when my dd is in her care.

Although your mother in law was clearly wrong for not respecting your choices, I do feel some of what you said would rightfully be insulting to sister in law which is unfair. Not your intention I am sure, but sometimes biting ones tongue in best!

Re: sorry for the rant ..but people blow my mind
MIL's ! My MIL use to make a lot of comments too when I had my first. Thank God she lives out of state now I only have to hear it once a year. In my case my DH and I didn't rely on them like her other 8 children. We married young, bought a house, have successful careers, and never asked them for anything. I honestly believe that bothers her because we don't kiss her a$$! Despite her comments I've always tried to maintain that relationship, but DH wants no part . If it wasn't for our DC I think she would have been all the way cut off. She had said some cruel things over the years.

She has some nerve criticizing you for your formula choice. You had every right to bring up daycare. Once someone attacks your choices, all bets are off! Sorry , your MIL sounds beyond rude.

That's crazy talk. Where does she even get the idea that liquid is better? Correct me if Im wrong but isn't "liquid" just technically pre-mixed formula, as in they take the powder and add water to it and put it in a can? Thus wouldn't ALL formula be powdered at first?
Then powder, theoretically, would be made fresh at home and you at least had the choice of using fresh filtered water. What type of water do they use in pre-made? And it's a lot more likely that the liquid would be spoiled/contaminated than the powder. Everyone knows powders keeps better and longer than liquids. Powdered milk lasts for years.
Man, that would really annoy me. My MIL drives me insane so I am all worked up on your behalf now LOL

I'm a formula feeding mom and my dd goes to daycare and I took no offense. It's true you can't shelter kids from everything! Personally I hated the cans enfamil was stored in, we always washed it before we used it. I like powder so much better!

sorry for the rant ..but people blow my mind
thank you everyone ...the first time we had an altercation about this she really made me think like I was doing something wrong ( I still did it cause I knew deep down I wasn't hurting my dd and I was taking the proper steps to be as sanitary as possible) .....however this second time it came up just flat out lite the match under my arse and set me off , it took all of me to calm down and not make a big scene about it. Don't get me wrong I love my mil and I know my mil LOVES my dd and I know she loves me ...she is and I have known this (ever since he put the engagement ring on my finger ) that she can be a nag and really I don't wanna say full blown annoying but if any of you have watched Raymond I feel like I can relate to numerous episodes ...shes like my own little marie barrone. That being said it still really makes me feel better knowing that at least this battle I am 100 percent correct in ...I never even thought of brining up the fact that helooooo liquid formula has to start from somewhere and like pp stated who knows what kind of water they really are using we can only take the manufactures word on it...thanks for the amo ladies for round three ( my husband will love you all for that one not lol ) .
P.s has to be noted my inlaws made a comment before this who formula thing that they heard on the news in regards to pacies ( which im ashamed to say my dd is hooked on we are desperately waiting for the pacie fairy to find the will power to come and take them away lol ) anyway the topic was if it falls on the floor they say the cleanest place to clean it off before giving it back to ur child is the mothe or fathers mouth if your not near water :0 . WHAT !!!!!!!!!!! I almost puked in my mouth before falling off my chair ...I didn't evern get into debate ...just before the words came out of my mouth my husband caught my eye and he knew I was about to open up some craziness at that table....counted to 10 and got up to change my ( clean daughter )

you know we were just talking about mouth "cleaning" on another thread. Someone said that there was an article out that said it provides your antibodies to your baby. I had heard that before but I also heard it is how dental bacteria is introduced and causes dental problems like cavities.
