Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
I really don't think it is such a big deal. The only reason we even know about is because it made the news. There are millions of crimes and people we never hear about...I am sure some of those people have done far worse than f*ck a stripper too. Give the young man a chance! There is not one person on this chat board that can say they were a perfect teenager / young adult.

Totally! Can you imagine - a female alum who had been drinking and hired a stripper being invited back to coach? Never in a million years! Good old Catholic double standards!
I think this puts Chaminade in a bad light. I'm sure there are lots of former lacrosse players they could have hired who lead better lives than this kid.

Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
I think I would think this is a big deal if I were paying $$$$ in tuition to a school that is supposedly teaching values that are inconsistent with the actions of this particular person.
I find this hiring pretty hypocritical from a school that cancelled its prom because of activities surrounding the prom that were considered inconsistent with the values they are trying to teach. If they are going to take a stand on topics like this, they should at least be consistent.

I was thinking the same thing - there is no way they would hire a woman, were this story reversed.
The whole thing is hypocritical.

well, I doubt Chaminade, an all boys high school, would hire a female to coach the boys lax team anyway!
this poor kids life is ruined because this woman lied. granted, he probably shouldnt have been where he was, but last time I checked getting a stripper when you are over 18 year old isnt illegal.
arent we innocent until proven guilty?

I'm not talking about the rape accusation. Yes, it's horrible that he was accused of something he didn't do. But he was still drinking underage and he hired a stripper. Not illegal, but not "Christian" behavior. We're setting our standards pretty low if this kid is a role model.
Plus, I think he's on probation for harrassment. If this is the best Chaminade could do, it doesn't say much for Chaminade.

Agreed! This guy should not be coaching and being a role model to HS guys who will look up to him as a star lax player from Duke.

I think the whole thing was about money anyways...those strippers were looking for a meal ticket. I'm glad the kid has moved on, and maybe he's a better person and role model for it, someone who can say he's learned.

Absolutely. But what we do is that (1) he was drinking underage- when he was only a year or two older than some of his students and (2) he hired a stripper for entertainment.
Of course hiring a stripper at 18 isn't illegal, and underage drinking is - but who cares. But it is IMMORAL.
Now I'm not Catholic, but I am going to guess that the church that frowns upon pre-marital sex is definitely not going to support stripping. So why should the school hire someone who the students KNOW hired a stripped to entertain him.
To me the message it sends is its OK to HIRE a stripper, just not to BE a stripper.
So if the school wants to be consistent with the rules of the church, they should not have hired him. Not because of any accusations of rape- but because of the fact that he hired a stripper.
ETA: I just don't think he is a good role model for students- especially when they are only a few years younger than he was when the incident occurred.

Whether or not he's innocent of the actual sexual assault charges which again, he has not been cleared from as of yet, it still surprises me that a religious school, or any school for that matter, would want someone as a role model who was involved in a situation with underage drinking and strippers.
At first I was going to agree w/ Meaghan, as he is innocent until proven guilty but you bring up a great point. I mean there were strippers there to begin with, he was there to begin with and there was underage drinking. I think you're right in that sense...it's not really a good idea this guy work at the school based on knowing all that...if it came to light that any other teacher at Chaminade was using strippers or was at a strip club I would bet they'd feel differently...

I feel that the stripper lied and he life should go on. I feel she lied the whole time.
However if there is another assualt case in the works, then I don't think he should be coaching anything.

Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
Actually everyone keeps saying that he hired the stirpper. I know this might just be symantics for some but i don't think that he was the person that actually hired the stripper. He was just at a party where there was a stripper. I don't know, but to me there is a difference. I have been at parties where people were doing drugs, it doesnt mean i bought drugs or did drugs, just means i happened to be at a party where there were drugs. For all we know, he was in a back room playing nintendo while the strippers were there.

Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
OH PLEASE !!! Underage drinking ?? You're going to tell me this kid can't be a 'role model' b/c he got drunk at a college party when he was 19 ?? You're going to tell me he can't be a lacorsse coach b/c he did an IMMORAL thing by going to a party where a bunch of young guys hired a stirpper ??
Chaminade is a High School, not the Vatican ! - You have to take an aptitude test to be accepted to the school, not enter the priesthood !!! - My husband went there, believe me, it's just like any other highschool - just more competitive ........
MAYBE the school is trying to help this kid out by giving him something productive to do while his life is being turned upside down - I'm not saying he's a saint, but really ?? Didn't we all go to college w/ 2,000 guys JUST like this kid ???

ITA- he was a a party where there was a stripper
and yes there was underage drinking- but what makes you think these HS kids don't go to parties with underage drinking every weekend- maybe they would feel more comfortable talking to him about a problem then a goody 2 shoes
also- most Lax players I personally know- are exactly model citizens- my bro included

I absolutely agree that there are alot of HS boys who are going to parties and drinking - but my surprise and point of the post is that a religious school would hire someone with a "questionable" history - one that is outwardly known by everyone. Especially a school, as others have posted, that has cancelled proms due to drinking and partying surrounding a prom. I work at a public high school on LI and there is no way that my district would hire this guy or allow him to volunteer - besides the fact that the phone would be ringing off the hook from the parents.
I am not saying at all that this kid's life should be ruined or that he should not be able to work, but at a high school - especially a religious high school - there's my surprise.

I didn't say he was immoral but certainly did not exhibit the type of a moral behavior that schools are looking for.
And while I understand the thought that a student might be more comfortable speaking to a teacher who has "partied", there are plenty of teachers, counselors, etc in my school that kids talk to about personal things and think are "cool" without knowing that type of stuff about them. If a teacher, in fact, did reveal that type of info, which hopefully they wouldn't, that teacher would more than likely be out on their ear!

When I said that it was immoral, I was talking about it from a religious point of view.
Do you think the Catholic school, with its the foundation in the Catholic church, would consider that kind of behavior(hiring a stripper, underage drinking) immoral? I do.
