OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
He hasn't been cleared of the charges!! This is the role model that should be working with young people?
Accused Duke lacrosse player lands at Chaminade BY BART JONES [email protected]
March 27, 2007, 11:10 PM EDT
Collin Finnerty, one of three former lacrosse players accused in the Duke University sex assault case, has a new part-time endeavor -- he's an assistant coach of the Chaminade High School varsity lacrosse team.
Finnerty started the volunteer job at his alma mater a few weeks ago after receiving an invitation from the head coach, said his father, Kevin Finnerty. The season officially began Tuesday with a win.
"Quite honestly, he enjoys it," said Kevin Finnerty, of Garden City. "He's definitely connected to the school. I think the kids look up to him."
Chaminade coach Jack Moran did not return calls seeking comment.
Last April, Moran described Collin Finnerty as a good student and player.
"He was never in any trouble here," Moran said. "He was a good teammate, a fit-in kind of player."
Finnerty, a 2004 Chaminade graduate, left Duke last year after he was accused in the alleged sex assault of an exotic dancer. He started attending Hofstra University and is awaiting a final decision on the case's outcome before he decides on returning to the university.
The case has been riddled with controversy. Durham, N.C., District Attorney Mike Nifong stepped down from the case in January amid allegations of ethics violations and asked the state attorney general's office to take over the investigation. If convicted, Nifong could be disbarred.
Finnerty and two other Duke players originally were indicted on charges of rape, sexual offense and kidnapping, but Nifong dropped the rape charges in December after the accuser said she was no longer certain intercourse had occurred.
The players have maintained their innocence. Copyright 2007 Newsday Inc.

Whether or not he's innocent of the actual sexual assault charges which again, he has not been cleared from as of yet, it still surprises me that a religious school, or any school for that matter, would want someone as a role model who was involved in a situation with underage drinking and strippers.

He graduated from Chaminade in 2004 which would have made him about 19-20 when this happened and illegal.
Doesn't matter to me if strippers are legal, this is not who I would want be a role model to my children.

Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
I'm not sure how I feel about this.....
One on hand I think it is atrocious the whay this whole case was handlkes and no matter what these boys lives will never be the same. It is horrific how quick they were to put them through all of that without really checking facts.
Now that I said that, I think it is nice Chaminade is trying to help out an alum BUT I don't know if it was a good thing to do. This is obviously an individual who has gone through quite a bit [there was an incident in D.C. he was involved in too] and I would hate to see anyone be negatively influenced in some way by his involvement with the Chaminade team.

He should be innocent until proven guilty...and as far as Chaminade is concerned - I'm guessing they feel that as an alumni he should be treated as innocent. Also, since it's a volunteer job it probably helps his image in some way.
Honestly, I feel bad for all those boys involved. I watched the whole thing on 60 minutes and that case is such a botch job. When they interviewed the boys each one of them said his life was going to be ruined and/or affected because this woman lied. And each was adamant about his innocence.
I think they should all be given a chance and treated as innocent until proven otherwise.

ITA....And remember, Jesus told us to "love thy neighbor", "turn the other cheek", and...who is to cast the first stone?
Mary Magdalene was accused of being a lose woman...
If they turned him away, it could only be seen as being hypocritical.

Forget the rape case, wasn't he on probation to begin with for a harassment or assault case?

Re: OK - this is REALLY bothering me!!!
Aside from this whole "rape" case, wasn't this kid charged with something else prior to the incident, something about a racial slur or something like that? Am I mistaken???

That's the D.C. incident I was referring to in my post. Apparently he was part of a group that allegedly assualted someone ecause they thought he was gay or something like that. I don't know the entire story - so that is why I said allegedly.

I agree with this. As a former Catholic school teacher, I can tell you that if a full time faculty member behaved in such a way (known to be participating in situations with strippers and such) and it became front page news, the likelihood that they would be invited to return to the school the following year would be slim.
I don't see why the standards should be lower for coaches or volunteers.

When I was in (Catholic) high school one of my teacher's was asked to resign because he was marrying a divorced woman. Apparently it was in their contracts.

Me too Beth, me too.
I consider myself "A la carte Catholic" (wow I sounds awful by saying that) That may sound awful - but I kind of pick and choose what I like about the church and steer clear of what I don't.
