New Year's Eve Time Square

Disclaimer: You could not pay me to spend NY's Eve in times square BUT we have guests coming for the holiday season this year and they are desperate to spend NY's Eve in time square. They have two boys- 14 and 10. They had looked into some party pass thing but it would cost them about $660 and it seems like a gimmick to me and they would not even see the ball drop from there.

Any options? has anyone done this and is it torture? Any restaurant recommendations that they could go to on that night and be close enough to see the famous ball drop and be safe and comfortable as a family?

Omg...we did...never again!!!!
The streets were so crowded. Streets were wet, smelling from urine for sure. People planted themselves at like 2pm just waiting. Roads were blocked. So many detours. We took train, thankfully or us thankfully bc the train was sooooo disgusting that night. People so trashed, vomiting,etc... It was really gross. Stay with your initial thought...don't do it ;)

This was my first experience IT was so cold, my mouth was frozen and i was drooling. Remember, no place to go to the bathroom, so don't even think about drinking anything. Then once its done, its done, mad dash to trains..It was a zoo getting to Penn Station.

2nd time i went was much better. Was at a friend's apt and we just walked over there at 11:50, saw it drop and walked back. That was so much better. i will never ever do it again standing out there all night...so boring too.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

Chat Icon I am NOT going...no way no how...I will be at home tucked up watching it from my cosy home. BUT my crazy out of towner relatives want to go and they are looking for some options on how to spend the night there...they have a hotel booked but with the two boys they were hoping to get to a close enough spot that they would be able to see the ball drop and have fun and be safe....

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

If they want to go so darn bad, let them do the research.

Then they only have themselves to blame if it's a horrendous experience.

Really, I heard the only way it's a somewhat enjoyable experience is if you have a nice hotel room many floors up looking down.

Too. as the kids are young. We used to go to Caroline's for the 10:30 comedy show. We got out 5 min before the ball dropped. Got the experience but didn't have to wait 12 hours outside. Best way to do it.

I honestly don't think you can be close enough to see anything unless you know someone maybe or you get there at 2 pm and just wait for 10 hours.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

we did it in 1996 or1997 i was a jr or sr in high school. It was cold but not super freezing. there was nowhere to use the bathroom. that was the worsttttt. It was really tough to get back to the train in time and squeeeeze on to make the last train before having to wait 4+ hours. I'm glad i did it, but never again!

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

I’d rather get a colonoscopy.

Go with your gut. Try and talk them into doing a nice dinner out and dancing – go to a nice bar where they have big flat screens that show the ball drop, they hand out noise makers, etc. I have done this at various places over the years and it’s so much fun. I have done it at places in Huntington, Insignia in Smithtown, etc. MUCH better. Or, have a house party – I have always wanted to do that!!

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

I love that you all feel the same way I doChat Icon There is NO changing their minds -its on their bucket list and they are not giving it up. To be honest I dont really care as I wont be there BUT I do think they are nuts and would like the boys at least to have some level of comfort while their crazy parents tick one other crazy thing off their bucket list.

New Year's Eve Time Square

Unless you know someone who has an office overlooking Times Square I would not do it. Especially with kids. It looks like fun on tv but in reality it looks to be a nightmare. Kids and no bathroom, good luck.

As pp said advise they have to plan it as you don't want them mad at you when they realize how horrible the conditions are.

There is not enough money in the world for me to take my fat as$ to NYC on NYE. Not unless I had a great hotel room with an awesome view and bathroom. If not, F that noise.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

Since they are from out of town they probably don't understand just how bad it is.
Like any tourist they probably think, oh fun, we have to do that.
Let them see for themselves.
If they don't listen to you, oh well.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

My office was across the street from the ball drop so for a few years, we went to my office to watch from above. It was amazing! Then some people ruined it for the rest of us. I would say it was pretty amazing to watch from above but I wouldn't want to deal with it on the streets.

I'm sure hotel rooms are insanely costly but maybe go in on one with other people?

have they been to times square on a regular day? maybe they should take a trip the day before, and tell them to picture 10x as many people with streets blocked off.

Don't do it! I went in 1996/97 with my boyfriend. It was horrible. We were so cold. We waited on line to have pizza. There were cops patrolling everyone as they were eating to eat fast and leave so more people can come in to eat. My bf and I were eating a small nibble every time the cops passed us bc we didn't want to leave the restaurant. Then we had to wait on line there to use the bathroom. Do your friends realize there is nowhere to use the bathroom????

I don't even want to get started on the train ride home!Chat Icon It was a nightmare and I was only 19 then!

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square

I'm pretty sure all hotels are booked like a year in advance (the ones that overlook TS).
I'm sure restaurants are mostly booked up too.

Remind them once they are in their viewing spot they won't be able to leave the area-no bathroom breaks, no bringing in bags, no food, etc. Just standing there.. for hours and hours...

Tell them to wear depends Chat Icon

Ugh the thought of NYE in TS makes me shudder.. No way in helll.... Chat Icon

Combined with a Root Canal! City + holidays = avoid like the plague or in our case Ebola!!

ETA: I would stress to them unless they have rich friends with a penthouse apt or $$$$$, it's going to be bad!

Seing as how they have it on thier bucket list and can't be talked out of it I would definitley tell them to look on the NYC toruism site...they have all kinds of tip and tour info for those looking to do the NYE experience. http://www.timessquarenyc.org/events/new-years-eve/index.aspx
