Seing as how they have it on thier bucket list and can't be talked out of it I would definitley tell them to look on the NYC toruism site...they have all kinds of tip and tour info for those looking to do the NYE experience. http://www.timessquarenyc.org/events/new-years-eve/index.aspx
This is good advice. I'm with everyone else in that you couldn't pay me to do it, but if they want too...

ITA that as tourists they probably have no idea what they're getting into so they will just have to experience it for themselves. As for myself, I have never went to times square on NYE nor would I ever want to

New Year's Eve Time Square
The one and only time I was in Times Square for NYE we had a hotel room at The W in Times Square. For hotel guests, they have a special section on the street. We went down at 11:50pm and had no issues at all. We stood there, watched the ball drop and then went back up and continued to party.
That is the ONLY way I would spend NYE in Times Square.

New Year's Eve Time Square
I did it once in my 20's. Never again. We got in super early. The crowds were crazy. I was so far up the guys ass in front of me I could grab his prostrate, people were pushing. We never even got anywhere near Times Square. Finally we said screw it (because one of us had to go to the bathroom) and jumped over a cement wall, ended up hanging out at a bar to watch the ball drop and went home soon after. It was such a waste...

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square
Typically the best and easiest thing to do is to go to any one of the open bars inside the security barrier of Times Square. Pay the $100-150 per person or whatever it costs, enjoy the night and usually at 10 minutes or so before midnight they let everyone out of the bar to walk over to see the ball drop. The ball drops, you go back in the bar to continue the night.
A bar would probably be an issue for a 10 or 14 year old, but for a couple it's by far the best way to see the ball drop.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square
When I was in college I spent NYE in NYC. A group of us got a two bedroom suite hotel room over looking where the ball dropped and split the cost of the room. We each chipped in and it covered the cost of food and drinks. It was the best way to do it. We were warm, listened to everything on tv and watched it live, and had food, and most importantly bathroom access.

New Year's Eve Time Square
No one in times square are nye are new yorkers. It's filled with tourists who seemingly don't know any better. I went once years ago and would never ever do it again. I'd have your guests do their own research. Your contribution can be to drop them off at the train station and let them enjoy it on their own.

I always wanted to do it since I was a kid. Never got the chance (A nasty boyfriend went without me once!!!) but now that I am in my 30s I dont think it will ever happen. I enjoy the comforts of home far too much.

Re: New Year's Eve Time Square
Went there several years ago, every block was guarded by police. We were staying at a hotel and I needed to show my confirmation at every intersection. So if you are going to a restaurant down there good luck. It was sooo cold, I will never do it again.
If I were you I would let them go and you guys can have a nice brunch new years day.
