Donna, Desmond was there for 3 years but that hatch was there for a LONG time I think? Desmond WAS on a race and wound up on the island The guy Calvin that Desmond referred to had found Desmond and he brought him to the hatch and they were 'partners' and would switch off with the numbers, etc
The Dharma Institute experiment obviously had started YEARS before that.. in the movie they try to 'date' it and make it look older

No I am pretty sure he said his boat crashed, Calvin brought him down, blah blah blah, Calvin died and that was 3 years ago. But Calvin could have been there 4eva

Coming into this late but...
Jin speaking English freaked me out more than anything else last night. In the very first episode, when he's talking to his wife, telling her that it's just the two of them, don't worry about anyone else, etc etc he actually says "Don't worry about the others". Now that he's apparently freaking fluent in English, it creeps me out - I think he's going to hold a major role from here on out.
I don't think the guy in the window of the video was Locke's pseudo-dad either. That guy was already balding and thinner back in at least 1980 when the video was made and Locke's dad was heftier and had a lot more hair in his flashbacks, which were definitely more recent than 25 years ago.
I don't think we've seen the last of Desmond either.

as for the whole sawyer, mike, gin, situation
i don't think the people on the other island are "the others" -- i think they are additional survivors who were at the back of the plane
i'll bet that big black guy that had them captive is that other woman's husband (the one who keeps saying that he husband is still alive) remember, he was at the back of the plane in the bathroom when it went down.
These people probably like think sawyer and company are the others.

and as someone said, this guy leonard in hurley's psych ward who kept saying the numbers over and over -- has something to do with this
i pulled this from season 1 -- leonard had served in the navy with a guy, sam toomey, who told him the numbers.
FLASHBACK to a small house in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the red desert of Kalgoorlie. Hurley asks the woman who answers to door if this is Sam Toomey's house. When she says it is, and that she is his wife, Hurley says he would like to speak with him. His wife would like to speak with him, too -- but he died four years ago. We follow him inside and we learn that Leonard served with Sam in the U.S. Navy years ago. Hurley asks Mrs. Toomey about the numbers and we learn that Sam heard a voice repeating those numbers, over and over again while serving his post at a naval listening post monitoring the South Pacific, 16 years ago. Years later, Sam used the numbers to win a contest at a local fair. He won a large sum of money…but things started to go wrong for him and his family after that. Sam believed the numbers were behind his bad luck, so he moved his family out in the desert hoping that would stop the curse. Hurley asks Mrs. Toomey if Sam ever succeeded in stopping the bad luck, he is momentarily encouraged by her answer. But only momentarily… "Yep. He put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger." Hurley admits that he thinks he is under the same curse, but Mrs. Toomey doesn't want to hear it. "You make your own luck, Mr. Reyes," she says. "You're looking for an excuse that doesn't exist."

The only thing that's making me think that he's not her husband is that he had a thick Australian accent when he spoke to Ana Lucia and Hurley asked the lady where she was from and she said the Bronx. Obviously it's possible that the man was originally from Australia and lived in the Bronx but it doesn't seem that likely to me. Plus, this guy looked younger than her husband did.
also, do you think there is hidden meaning behind the number 108 (the number of minutes you have before you have to hit the button)
other than the fact that all the numbers (4,8,15,16,23,42) add up to 108, I can't think of what else it is...

I did! I thought maybe that they were trying to make it seem old. It reminded me of the old movies we watched in school. I was of course, trying to listen for hidden messages in those skips.

Nope, I do not think that this guy is Rose's husband.. Rose seems older, this guy seems younger.. and like Eileen said, the accent threw me a bit
I am still not entirely convinced that "THE OTHERS" are just the other surirvors of the plane crash.. I think Ana Lucia might not be all she appears to be  (there are some interesting theories running around on the LOST message boards, and one of them is that Ana Lucia was not just an innocent passenger on the plane.. there might be more going on with her and WHY she was on the plane than meets the eye)
Also - I do not think that (1) that was Locke's father on the Dharma film that Jack and Locke watched.. I think Locke would have DEFINITELY reacted.. and (2) I do not think that was Jack's ex-wife Sara in that photograph with Desmond in the hatch.. again, Jack would have TOTALLY reacted to that, just look how crazy he was just becuase he recognized Desmond
