oh man, i'll be going the LIRR commute soon when i move- i remember this from back in the day when i commuted from my mom's.
BUT, I've been dealing with subway commuting for the past 5 years, so the LIRR will seem like heaven for me and DH (at least for the beginning).
it's actually sad, cause i've just started getting the hang of the subway- where to stand to get a seat when the subway gets to the city, how many people of varying sizes can fit on one subway bench (the norm is 6, but can get to 8 if mostly women or skinny peps), etc.
The only thing better about the subway is when you do get a seat- there's leg room! Me and DH are tall and i remeber the struggle when we took the LIRR.

what i've learned from riding the subways for 20+ years is...sitting is for old people, children, disabled, preggos, drunks, and old Chinese ladies who will bumrush you like there's no tomorrow. I never bother looking for a seat, even if the train is empty. It ain't worth the aggravation.
