Most people have no common sense and no common courtesy.
According to the MTA, it is actually considered Disorderly Conduct to take up more than one seat and is punishable by a fine.

Re: LIRR Vent
Ugh I hate it when people do this! I also hate when people sit on the aisle seat and won't just slide over- it causes a backup as everyone has to wait for them to pick up all their stuff and get up for you! I also get annoyed when instead of just getting up right away, they sit there and ask "what stop are you getting off at?" and then if you say a later stop then they get up. Yeah great way to rationalize it but this wastes even more time as they mentally calculate which stop is later!

Sorry - I don't slide. I don't like sitting in the middle of two people but I also don't settle in until it appears everyone that is going to sit is sitting.

OMG...that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time!!
And how do they propose to enforse this, when the conductors dont have the ballz to tell people on the cell phones to quiet down or to take your feet off the seat in front of you....
They going to have to hire Conduct Police to ride the trains....then our fairs will go up because the salaries will have to be paid!!

Me either.
It takes all of 5 extra seconds for me to get up and you to get in. Why should I give up the seat I wanted if I got there first to sit in it?
At the same time, I also don't take up two seats and have no problem with people sitting next to me.
I have a huge problem with the really loud cell phone talkers. It's one thing if you have a quick work call that's important or if you have a quick, important call... but there's no need for you to be chatting at the top of your lungs for hours on end.

one of my favorites is the announcement about keeping your feet off the seats and talking on your cell phone just as we are getting off the train. They should do it when people get on the train.

me too, i don't slide. I got here first but I have no problem getting up and letting you in..
i have had people not ask me to let them in and simply slide themselves in almost sitting on my lap.

I figured since I see it so often there may not be many who agree with me, and I agree I do hate to be squished between 2 people, but it just irks me when people do this. If I know the train will eventually be crowded and I want an aisle seat I would rather sit in a 2-seater with someone then a 3-seater where someone else may want to sit after me.
I guess this bothers me the most when it's one person sitting in a 3-seater, and they sit in the aisle. There is the one woman who does it every day and always sits in the first 3-seater before the double seats at the end of the car- then when people need to get in she doesn't even get up, people have to squeeze past her to sit down.

There used to be a man that did this on my train - he would turn his legs out towards the aisle as though that makes much of a difference. That's really annoying.
Conversely there's the people that charge into the seats and not let the aisle person get up. They bug me too.
Ok, I'll admit it -- I hate commuting...
The reason I would pick the 3 seater aisle over the 2 seater aisle is because in my head I think there's a lower chance of having someone sit in the middle seat vs the window seat of the 2 seaters.

Me too!
Sadly, I'd rather stand than sit in between 2 people, but I have zero problem sitting next to someone in a 2-seater... There is such a science to commuting, it's so funny!

My personal favorite are the people who come into the city to shop for the day and proceed to take up the whole 5-seat area near the doors on the older rush hour trains. I LOVE to see the commuters get on and tell them they want to sit down. The shopper gets more and more miffed as she has to put her bags up top.
hehe - or the crew of old ladies who have gone to a Weds. matinee and then take a 5:30 ish rush hour train home - They actually give you serious attitiude if you ask them to move over so you can sit .......I'm sorry, I just worked a 10 hour day, what the hell did you do ??

Seriously! It gets the juices flowing in the morning.
I would have to be thoroughly exhausted to voluntarily take a middle seat. Luckily my ride is about 30 mintues or less so it's not a big deal at all to stand.

This morning I got on and there were NO seats, - I sat myself down in a free seat, which was a 2 seater.........well, the extremely large man who was already sitting down so SO mad at me that he gave me dirty looks and huffed and puffed and elbowed me the entire way from Massapequa to Penn ........ -
Sorry buddy, I don't pay over $200 a month to stand on the train so YOU can be more comfortable ! -

I don't know about LIRR but here in the city we have NYPD who ride the subways and I have seen people get fined for various violations.

Re: LIRR Vent
I know this is a little off topic, but one time about 10 years ago I was taking the LIRR on a Sunday morning, so it was almost empty. I sat on a 3-seater b/c I figured it would never fill up. Then this man got on and sat ON MY SAME SEAT (there were LOADS of empty seats). Then he went to sleep. He was in the middle seat, right next to me. I got creeped out obviously, so I woke him up and moved to another empty seat.

Re: LIRR Vent
Today I get on the train and it is empty. All the rest of the cars are packed. I'm thinking no AC, but I don't care, I prefer an emptier car. I get in, AC is fine, sit down, still empty. Right before the train leaves three seperate ho bags get on the train and sit in the seat in front of me, the seat behind me, and the seat next to me and proceed to have three seperate, very loud conversations. The conductor whispered to the one "can I have your ticket?"

i had that happen on a subway platform at Sutphin..I was sitting waiting for the train and three women sat next to me on either side and had a conversation across me. I asked them if they would like to sit together and they said, oh no, it's fine.
I got up anyway..common sense please!
