LIRR Vent
Ok let me just say I totallly don't mind this if the train isn't crowded.
Dear Man on the train,
The seat next to you is not to be used for storage space for your laptop or coffee. When someone comes and asks to sit in the seat next to you just kindly move your items over to your lap or the storage area above you instead of getting all aggravated with the fact that you have to move YOUR items to the seat YOU'RE occupying.
The seats are meant for buttocks!!!
That is all!

Totally agree with you. This is why I know there are no mind readers. Because in almost 20 years of commuting, I've never run into a person who read my "Move your sh!t! Your laptop doesn't pay 100s of dollars for commuting" thoughts.

Seriously! I don't understand how people can take two seats on crowded rush hour trains and then roll their eyes when you ask to sit there.
I made one girl move yesterday -- she had her giant purse on one side of her and a shopping bag on the other as she sat between the 2 seats. I asked her if I could use one of them.

Re: LIRR Vent
I could write a book about stuff like this. My biggest peeve is the ever loving too loud IPOD with crappy ear buds.
If I can hear it from 3 rows back, it's too freakin loud.
I made two guys put their laptop on the rack above today. The guy on the end was fine with it and I always ask nicely, but the guy by the window acted as if I moved into his house unexpectedly.

If I see someone with their crap on the seat next to them I usually like to sit in that seat just to piss them off. You know they are only doing it to try and force people to look for another seat.

Re: LIRR Vent
My personal favorite are the people who come into the city to shop for the day and proceed to take up the whole 5-seat area near the doors on the older rush hour trains. I LOVE to see the commuters get on and tell them they want to sit down. The shopper gets more and more miffed as she has to put her bags up top.

LMAO!!!!! This is so true. I use the rail to get into Boston every day and it's a CONSTANT problem every day. People take up three seats with their laptop, bag and briefcase.. It's crazy!
ETA: and WHY do you have to ASK to sit down??? Why don't people today have the common courtesy to simply move their stuff when they see a crowd come onto the train?????

Today's LIRR highlight was the mystery whistler. Yup, whistling the same tune on and off for the whole ride.

Because I sit and try to look like an undesirable LIRR neighbor, while silently pleading that no one sits next to me. I always jump up and move my stuff immediately when asked - and I'll even switch seats so people traveling togehter can sit next to each other.

Re: LIRR Vent
I hate when people do that. Move your bag, idiot, I want to sit down. You think its fair that your laptop/bag/whatever gets a seat while I have to stand for an hour or more? Kindly move your bag and stop rolling your eyes and don't huff and puff like I've asked you to get out and push the train. Oh yeah and when you're cell phone rings and you proceed to have a conversation, yes I am going to give you dirty looks.

there was a lady on the train last week who did this and she was so loud that I could hear her several rows down, everyone within a few rows of her were giving her looks, rolling their eyes, but she just kept on loudly chatting.

Thank you for doing that!!
This is another thing I don't get - why more people don't do this! DH and I ride the train together - it is obvious, and there will be all these people sitting alone in a two seater and we have to sit separately. Too bad now you will have to deal with us talking to each other anyway.

Conversely, why don't some people that are travelling together sit together? I always see people that take two aisle seats across from each other when there are PLENTY of seats for 2 and chat the whole ride. I get that the aisles seats are a little more roomy but it's likely you are still going to be sitting next to someone else and now everyone around you gets to eaves drop on the conversation.

LOL, I do the same exact thing! "Oh, I'm sorry, did you pay two monthly's this month to accomodate your freakin briefcase...I don't think so!" I couldn't believe the reaction I would get when I'd ask them if I could sit there so now I specifically look for those people too!
